Shirley J. Smith

Shirley Jean Smith, 58, of 111 Livia Lane, died Tuesday, April 15, 2014.
Survivors are: daughter, Latisha; mother, Shirley; sisters, Deloris Patterson, Sharon Joy, Lenora McQueen, Laura Melvin and Carmita Graham; brothers, Victor and John; and a grandchild
The funeral will be held Saturday, April 19 at 4 p.m. in Word of Life Temple. Burial will be in Highland Biblical Gardens.
Visitation will be held Friday, April 18 from 1 to 7 p.m. at Buie Funeral Home chapel in Raeford.

Rev. Claudie Dial

Rev. Claudie Dial, 94, of 110 Goose Pond Road, died Monday, April 14, 2014.
He was an Army veteran.
Survivors are: sons, Elisha, Samuel, Gary and Dozier; daughters, Gwynn, Leatha, Dorothy Locklear and Ethel Rogers; and stepsons, David, Gary and Delmer Coffman.
The funeral will be held Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mount Elim Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held Friday, April 18 from 6 to 9 at the church.

Gertrude B. Bruton

Gertrude Brown Bruton, 74, of 514 N. Jackson St., died Tuesday, April 15, 2014.
Survivors are: husband, Leon Sr.; children, Tomeika Bruton-McClean, Tanya and Leon Jr.; nine siblings; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Saturday, April 19 at 2 p.m. in Sandy Grove AME Zion Church in Lumber Bridge. Burial will be in church cemetery.
Visitation will be held today, April 18 from 1 to 7p.m. at Buie Funeral Home chapel in Raeford.

Etienne Oggeri

Etienne Oggeri, died Tuesday, April 15, 2014, in First Health Moore Regional Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Lechi Oggeri, a local artist of Fayetteville.
Mr. Oggeri was born in Dalat, South Vietnam. It was there that he met his present wife, Lechi, sister of Madame Ngo Dinh Nhu, First Lady of South Vietnam. Her disapproval of the relationship led to his expulsion from the country and they eventually settled in Fayetteville.
He was a renowned big game hunter. He became an intelligence research analyst at Fort Bragg. After his retirement he started writing books. One of them, "I Killed for a Living," was published by Safari Press, California and was selected as one of the American Classics of the Big Game Hunting series.
A funeral service for Mr. Oggeri will be private.

Tayvon J. McMillan

Tayvon J. McMillan, 18, of Raeford, died Sunday, April 6, 2014.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Susie Letlow, grandfather, Thomas Ross; great-grandparents, Milton and Ann Hill; and great-grandmother, Naomi Moye.
Survivors are: mother, Sharonda McMillan; father, Chris Letlow,of Newport News, Virginia; sisters, Soncerie Letlow, Ashanti Letlow, and Tejanah Murray; brothers Jamaii Murrary, and Skylon
McMillan; grandparents, Joseph and Sharon McMillan; and a host of family and friends.
The funeral was held Sunday, April 13 at 2 p.m. in J. W. Turlington School. Burial was in Mountain Grove Church Cemetery.

Martha "Irene" Karpuszka

Martha "Irene" Karpuszka, 82, of St. Helena Island, South Carolina, formerly of Raeford, died Friday April 11, 2014 at her home.
She was widow of Robert J. Karpuszka.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 16, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, April 17, 2014 at noon at Beaufort National Cemetery.

Roger G. Owens

Roger G. Owens Jr., 39, of Raeford, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014.
He was born on Sept. 6, 1974, in Cumberland County.
He was a firefighter with Fayetteville Fire Department and a paramedic with Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He had been a volunteer firefighter with numerous fire departments throughout Cumberland County.
Survivors are: daughter, Olivia Ann Owens, of Elizabeth City; and two sons, Roger Aiden Owens and Blake Riley Owens, both of Elizabeth City; his parents, Ann Hughes and J. Thomas Hughes, of Stedman; fiancée, Jenni Bayne, of Raeford; paternal grandmother, Melba Hughes, of Fayetteville; paternal grandmother, Elsie Bradshaw, of Clinton; two brothers, Jason Hughes, of Durham, and Michael Owens, of Stedman; and a sister, Krystal Owens, of California.
Burial services will be private and for the family.

Robert C. English

Robert Curtis English, 77, of 195 N. Hilltop Road, died Friday, April 11, 2014.
Survivors are: wife, Marie Locklear; son, Bobby Locklear; daughters, Donna Garner, Joyce Duncan, Brenda Beavers and Linda Schlosser; stepson, Michael; stepdaughters, Jessica Hall, Melinda Rogers and Tammy.
The funeral will be held Monday, April 14 at 2 p.m. Monday in Sandhills Community Baptist Church in Red Springs. Burial will be in church cemetery.

James H. Teal

James Harry Teal, 82, of Aberdeen, died Saturday, April 12, 2014.
He was a Navy veteran.
Survivors are: son, Roger Puckett; daughter, Patricia Beavers; brother, Richard; sisters, Betty Brooks and Juanita Boros; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, April 15 at 11 a.m. in Ashley Heights Baptist Church. Burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday, April 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Boles Funeral Home of Southern Pines.

Woodrow H. Westall

Woodrow Hillis Westall, age 91, of 308 South Main Street, Red Springs, died Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Buncombe County on September 26, 1922 to the late Edwin McBurney Westall and Patricia Gibson Westall. He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Duncan Westall and six sisters. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he was the Men's Sunday School Class Teacher for more than 25 years. He served in the Army-Air Force during WWII and worked in the Hoke County School systems from 1964 until his retirement in 1984.
Survivors are three sons, Hillis Westall Jr. of Creedmoor, Joe Westall and his wife Sandi of Red Springs, and Bill Westall and his wife Michelle of Raleigh; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2014 at Crumpler Funeral Home, 220 East 4th Ave. Red Springs.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Trinity United Methodist Church.
Burial will be in the Alloway Cemetery.
