Doris Calloway

  Doris Cain Calloway passed away Friday, December 29, 2017 at Open Arms Retirement Center in Raeford at the age of 84.

She was born in Bladen County on November 21, 1933 to the late Thomas Grover and Pauline Cain.

She graduated valedictorian from Grays Creek High School and attended Flora MacDonald Women's College.  She was secretary to the President of Flora MacDonald Women's College in Red Springs; a substitute teacher, secretary at First Baptist Church in Raeford and maternity leave secretary for Hoke County Schools. 

She volunteered for 50 years in the preschool department at First Baptist Church in Raeford, over 1000 hours tutoring with Hoke Literacy Council, and volunteered with the H. E. L. P. store, Meals on Wheels, Vacation Bible School, and as a Girls In Action leader.

She enjoyed trips with the First Baptist Church Round-Abouts, the Bible Study Group and gardening and yardwork, puzzles, crafts, cooking and reading, especially her Bible.

Survivors include a daughter, Sheila Calloway of Raeford; a son, Donald Calloway of Raeford; three brothers, Julian T. (Sonny) Cain and wife Pat of Hope Mills, Richard E. (Rick) Cain and wife Betty of Winston-Salem, and Kenneth E. (Eddie) Cain and wife Cathy of St. Pauls; brother-in-law, C. S. Melvin, Jr. of Fayetteville; and sister-in-law, Dorothy (Dott) Calloway Jordan and husband Ray of Mt. Airy. 

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Mawyer Martin Calloway, her sisters, Carolyn C. Sherrill, Vivian C. McNeill, Sophia C. Dawson, Annie Ruth C. Melvin and Shirley C. Rozier, and a brother, John Franklin Cain.

A visitation will be held 1-2 p.m. Sunday, December 31, 2017 at Raeford First Baptist Church, 333 N. Main Street, Raeford. 

 The funeral will follow at 2 with Reverend Tom Lee officiating.

Interment will follow the service at Highland Biblical Gardens.

Michael Austen

Ret. USN Senior Chief Michael Austen passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at Hospice House in Pinehurst at the age of 73. 

Born in Warsaw, New York to Neil and Eileen Austen, he served 23 years in the US Navy, retiring as a Flight Engineer. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a hero and an honorary SF member. 

He leaves behind his wife of 51 years, Helen Austen; three children, Stacy of San Diego, California; a son, Ken of Portland, Oregon and a younger daughter, Tiffany Bryan of Raeford; seven grandchildren, Gunnar, Greer and Gage of Portland, Derek and Monica of Raeford, and McKenzie of Fayetteville; and great-grandchildren Selena and Manny of Portland, and Liam, Eva and Emerie of Raeford. 

A visitation will be held 3-4 p.m. Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Ave. Raeford, NC. The funeral with full military honors will follow at 4 p.m. in Crumpler Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Baker officiating.

Wally Jordan

Walter "Wally" Baker Jordan of Raeford passed away Saturday, December 24, 2017 at his home at the age 58. 
He was born April 15, 1959 in Cumberland County. He is preceded in death by his father Dr. Riley M. Jordan. He graduated from Wake Forest University with a bachelor's degree. His hobbies included golfing and reading. He was an avid sports fan. He was easygoing and had a very dry sense of humor. His career was spent in the food industry, in the cities of Raeford, Rocky Mount, and Richmond, Virginia. 
He is survived by his mother Faye Baker Jordan of Raeford; three brothers, Mike Jordan and his wife Beth of Georgetown, South Carolina, Bob Jordan and his wife Amy of Cary, and John Jordan and his wife Polly of Raeford; three sisters, Beth Foster and her husband Bill of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Kim Williamson and her husband Don of Lumberton, and Suzanne McGougan and her husband Joe of Conway, South Carolina; a very special aunt, Phyllis B. McNeill of Raeford; and many nieces and nephews. 
A memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, December 29, 2017 at Raeford Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Steven Fitzgerald and Wally's brother-in-law, the Rev. Bill Foster, officiating. A private graveside service will held at the Raeford Cemetery with the Rev. Tom Lee officiating. 
The family will receive friends after the service in the John C. Ropp Fellowship Hall At Raeford Presbyterian Church.

Debra McKenzie

Debra Faircloth McKenzie passed away in her home on December 13, 2017 at the age of 61. 
She was born in Greenville, South Carolina on April 30, 1956 to the late William and Thelma Norton Faircloth. She was a member of Antioch Presbyterian Church and she attended Lumber Bridge Presbyterian Church where she served actively in the choir and the Presbyterian Women. She was a member of Lumber Bridge Community Choir and was the secretary of the Stonewall Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Red Springs and Northern Foundation. She graduated from Appalachian State University and also received her master's degree from N.C. Central University in Library Science. She retired from the Cumberland County School System.  
She is survived by her husband Neill McKenzie; two sons, Matthew McKenzie of Arlington, Virginia and Daniel McKenzie of Sumter, South Carolina; a brother, William (Billy) Faircloth of Lexington, Kentucky; four sisters, Janice Russ and husband Norm of Fayetteville, Susan Johnson and husband Dwight of Stedman, Beverly Hobgood and husband Tom of Stedman and Cathy Johnson of Hope Mills; and a sister-in-law, Sherry Knott of Shannon.  
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. on Friday, December 15, 2017 at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Avenue, Raeford, NC. 
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Lumber Bridge Presbyterian Church with Chaplain Archie Barrington and Rev. Dr. David Hudson officiating. Burial will be in the Antioch Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Torrance Taylor

Torrance Dwayne Taylor, known as TEE by his family and friends, died December 2, 2017 at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
He was born was born March 9, 1967 in Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia to Charmaine D. Taylor (Melchizedek).
He was a God-fearing man.  He was known to make others laugh and give an encouraging word. Even in his turmoil with cancer he remained funny, encouraging to others, strong in his faith, and trusting in God's will.
He attended elementary School in Oakland, California, middle school in Augsburg, Germany, and high school in Killeen, Texas, and later graduated from Pemberton Township High School in New Jersey with the class of 1985.  There in high school he played football and ran track, setting a few local and state records.
He attended college while in the Army Reserve and while on active duty.  During his active military time, he served in Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, Afghanistan, and a tour in Germany.  He retired from the military at Fort Bragg after serving a total of 22 years.
He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Patrice Taylor; Brianna and Trinity Taylor in the home; his mother Charmine, uncles, Nathaniel (Lemelle) Taylor and  Ali Da Bey (Uncle Pee Wee); children, Lakisha (Michael) Uzzell, ZarTavia S. (Eddie) Elbert, Nathaniel III Taylor; grandchildren, Ceriae Smith, Cristin Ware, Myiesha Smith, Jaevion M Felton, and Zolae A Elbert; and sister, Sherria Melette.
Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 15 at Butler Funeral Home in Red Springs from 1-5 p.m.
The funeral will be Saturday, Dec. 16 at 1 p.m. at Nazareth Missionary Baptist Church in Wagram.

Dwan Upchurch

Dwan Swindell Upchurch, 87, died on December 8, 2017 in Elizabeth City. 
She was born to Guy Swindell and Alma Jefferson Swindell on September 11, 1930 in Washington, North Carolina. She loved the banks of the Pamlico River with all her heart and was a true Beaufort County girl. 
After graduation from Meredith College, she met and married Thomas Joseph Upchurch. They made their home in Raeford, where she was a beloved seventh grade Language Arts teacher for many years. After his death, she moved to Garner, where she made many new friends and enjoyed her bridge games at the senior center. She loved her Sunday School class, and she was a great student of the Bible.  
In 2016, she moved to Elizabeth City, where she made more good friends and received tender care at the Brookdale Community there. 
She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Dwan and Harry Turner and Missy and Richard Godfrey and by her five grandchildren, Michael (Kenza) Turner, Sarah Turner, Laura (Nate) Turner, Leah Godfrey, and Mark Godfrey. 
The funeral will be held Friday, December 15, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Raeford United Methodist Church 308 North Main Street, Raeford. Pastor Susan Hobbs and the Rev. Brian Wingo will officiate. Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery. The family will receive friends after the service at the graveside.

Joyce Martin

Joyce Gail Williamson Martin of Raeford passed away on Friday, December 8, 2017 at her home at the age of 80. 
She was born in Wilson on July, 18, 1937 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Claude Williamson. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Ray Kowalski. She was a member of West Fayetteville Baptist Church. 
Survivors are her husband, William A. (Bill) Martin of Raeford; a daughter, Melanie Allen of Fairmont; two sons, Kenneth Kowalski Jr. of Raeford, and Keith Kowalski of Fayetteville; a stepdaughter, Darcie Martin of Daune, New Yors; a stepson, William Charles Martin of Bloomingdale, New York;  nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Pierce of Summerset, Kentucky. 
A memorial service will be held Saturday at West Fayetteville Baptist Church.

Edwin R. Lutz

Edwin Richard Lutz formerly of York, Pennsylvania, passed away on Friday, December 1, 2017 in his home at the age of 74.

He was born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania on July 4, 1943 to the late Edwin Paul Lutz and Regina Talbot Lutz. After serving in the United States Navy,he joined the Pennsylvania State Police where he served as a state trooper until his retirement. He served as a past commander of the York Sail and Power Squadron. He and his wife, Cathie, enjoyed their time together both on the water and traveling the country.

He leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Catherine Foley Lutz of Raeford; his brothers, James Lutz (Bonnie) of Jacksonville, Florida, Robert Lutz (Margaret) of Murrysville, Pennsylvania and Lawrence Lutz of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and his sister, Mary Frances of Jeannette, Pennsylvania.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at the Williamson Farm, 1273 S. Bethel Rd, Raeford, NC 28376. A second memorial service will be held 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at the White Rose Bar and Grill, 48 N. Beaver St, York, PA 17401.

Margaret English

Margaret Beckwith English of Raeford passed away Wednesday, November 08, 2017 at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst at the age of 83.

She was born February 09, 1934 in Chatham County to the late William Lattie Beckwith and Hallie Bryan Beckwith. She is also preceded in death by her siblings Roland  Beckwith, Hazel McNeill, and Billy Beckwith.

She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. Her hobbies included horseback riding, square dancing, clogging and listening to bluegrass and gospel music.

She is survived by her husband Clarence G. English; five children, Corinne E. Chapman (Donnie), Sharon English, Ronald English (Lisa), Keith English, and Amy English; eight grandchildren, Brian Chapman (Ashley), Kelly McGee (Ronnie), Michael Chapman, Tim Chapman, Tate English (Rachel) Sarah Wilcox , Zada English, and Phoenix English; eight great-grandchildren, Hannah Parker, Hallie Parker, Ryan Chapman, Emma McGee, Garrett Chapman, Scarlett Chapman, Jane Wilcox, and Ethan Wilcox; and a great-great-grandchild, Carter Lancaster.

A visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Crumpler Funeral Home 131 Harris Ave. Raeford.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 12, 2017 at Hillcrest Baptist Church 2699 US 401 Business Raeford.

Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

Anita Foresha

Anita L. Foresha, 81, of Raeford passed away Thursday, November 9, 2017 in First Health Hospice House.

She was born in Auburn, New York on July 12, 1936 to the late Marco and Bertha Jackson Orasi. She was a homemaker and loved her family. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her husband William Eric Foresha of the home; Richard Allen Foresha and William Eric Foresha Jr, both of Raeford; Lynn Ann Sitman of Florida; a grandchild, Nicole Marie Beaver and many extended family members.

The funeral will be held at a later date in New York.

Rosa McNeill

Rosa L. McNeill of Fayetteville passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at FirstHealth Hospice in Pinehurst, at the age of 92.

 She was born October 4, 1925 in Marion County, SC to the late Neill E. Rouse and Jessie Byrd Rouse. She is preceded in death by her husband Malcolm McNeill and her son, John C. McNeill.

She is survived by her son Tom McNeill of Fayetteville, 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and a sister,Pearl Jackson of Marion, SC.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Antioch Presbyterian Church 6583 Red Springs Road, Red Springs, NC.

Rosa L. McNeill

Rosa Lee McNeill formerly of Raeford passed away on November 7, 2017 in FirstHealth Hospice and Palliative Care, Pinehurst. 
She was born on October 4, 1925 in Marion County, South Carolina to the late Neil E. Rouse and Jessie Byrd Rouse. She was preceded in death by her husband , Malcolm McNeill, and her son John C. McNeill. 
She loved her family, gardening and her dogs. 
She is survived by her son, Tom E. McNeill and his wife Mickey of Fayetteville; four grandchildren, Delana, Mike, Jennifer and Shaun; five great-grandchildren, Alexis, Drew, Logan, Lincoln and Gentry, all of Cumberland County, and her sister Pearl Jackson of Marion South Carolina. 
A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Antioch Presbyterian Church Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Chandler officiating.

Barbara Lupo

Barbara Lupo, 68, of Pinebluff, passed away at Duke University Hospital on Sunday, November 5, 2017.

She was born in Bennettsville, South Carolina to the late Harold and Annie Covington.  She was raised in Laurinburg and was a graduate of Laurinburg High School.  After graduation, she attended Wingate University and U.N.C. – Pembroke, and had earned her Masters in Education and Administration.  She was a loving and dedicated teacher for almost 25 years in the Hoke County school system. She also served as assistant principal of West Hoke Elementary, as well as the director for instruction at the Hoke County Board of Education for 17 years, for a total of 42 years of service.  She loved teaching the 4th grade and every child she met, she loved.  She officially retired from teaching in 2002, but her love for teaching took her back to the classroom until 2013.  She also loved playing the piano and shared her talent for several local churches in the area. She was a very loving wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend, and she will always be remembered for her generosity, lively spirit, and dedicated service to the church and the community.

She was the wife of Jimmy Lupo of Pinebluff.  She also is survived by her daughter, Andrea Lupo, and her sister, Frances Jeanette Townsend.

The funeral will be held at Yates-Thagard Baptist Church, 3820 Vass-Carthage Rd., Carthage on Friday at 2 p.m.  The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service starting at 1 p.m.
