Velma Chumley

Velma Crumpler Chumley, a loving wife, mother of three boys and six grandchildren, died in her home January 30, 2018 after a long illness. 
She was oldest child, born on February 12, 1932 in Clinton, to Gordon and Margaret Bradshaw Crumpler. She graduated from Highsmith Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Fayetteville as a registered nurse. She received special pediatric training at Duke University. She married Paul Franklin Chumley Sr. in 1960. They were married for 57 years.  
She was employed at Highsmith Hospital where she was head of the Pediatrics Floor and taught pediatrics after graduation. She later returned to work two nights a week, so she could care for her two boys. She was also was employed at Southeastern Regional Hospital in Lumberton. Upon marrying, the Chumley's lived in Waynesville, Asheville, and Lumberton, as her husband transferred. When her husband was promoted, they moved to Columbia, South Carolina where she was one of the first registered nurses employed by Lexington County Hospital when it opened. She again worked two nights a week relieving the head night nurse and other different positions for many years.
She was an active member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church where she served on numerous committees. She and several other ladies formed a team called the "Mop Squad", where they cleaned homes for sick and disabled people free of charge. She also along with other ladies performed skits at church functions like the churches Fall Festival.  
She is survived by her husband Paul F. Chumley Sr.; sons and daughters-in-law, Paul Jr. and Jodi Chumley of Lexington, Gregory (Greg) and Donna Chumley of Lexington, and Garrett (Gary) Chumley of McKinney, Texs; six grandchildren, Brittany, Lauren, Katie, Grayson, Luke, and Noah; her brothers, Franklin (Dayne) Crumpler of Raeford, and Vernon (Pam) Crumpler of Southern Pines.  
The funeral will be held at Riverland Hills Baptist Church in Irmo, South Carolina, with burial at Bush River Gardens Cemetery, on Bush River Road. The family will receive friends at prior to the services at the church.
