Donald B. Futrell

Donald Bryant Futrell of Raeford died peacefully in his home on June 9, 2020 at the age of 78.

He was born on April 18, 1942, son of the late Laudie and Vera Kennedy Futrell. He enjoyed many hobbies in his lifetime such as fishing, drag racing, and even joking with his friends, family, and anyone he met. He will always be remembered as a jack of all trades. He was a hard worker and worked many jobs over his lifetime, including textiles and poultry farming; he was also a great salesman. He is remembered as "The Pots and Pan Man" where he owned his own business and did home demonstrations. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Ella Mae Futrell, his grandchildren, Shane and Shelvia, and his siblings, Cleo, Margaret and Sudie.

He is survived by his children, Glenn Futrell and his wife, Rose Mary of Raeford, Gregg Futrell and his wife Joy of Tar Heel, Sherry Cummings and her husband, Walter of Raeford, Lisa Locklear and her husband, Burke of Raeford, Carolyn Clark and her husband, Patrick of Asheboro, and Kevin Futrell, and his wife, Chrystal of Raeford; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; his brother Arnold and his wife, Shirley of Easley, South Carolina; and his sister, Ludie Hill of Kinston.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. June 14, 2020 at Crumpler Funeral Home in Raeford. The family will receive friends one hour before the service. A graveside service will follow in the Maxwell Cemetery, Albertson.

Wayne Gardner

Wayne Gardner of Raeford died Monday June 8, 2020 at the age of 70. 
He was born on January 6, 1950 in Cumberland County, son of the late Augusta Wayne (A.W.) Gardner and Geraldine Burns Gardner. 
He retired from Hoke County Sheriff's Department, and also worked for N.C. Department of Social Services (Child Support Division) and National Finance. He was a member of Parker United Methodist Church, Hoke County Masonic Lodge #306, Shriners, and Sons of Confederacy. He was a private pilot who enjoyed recreational flying. 
He is survived by his wife of 50 years Debbie Smith Gardner of Raeford; three daughters, Christy Beasley (Billy), Carrie Bounds, and Amy Lunsford (Josh) all of Raeford; six grandchildren, Brittany Beasley Archer, Hannah Beasley, Maddison Branch, Allie Grace Bounds, Jackson Bounds, and Emma Lunsford; and three siblings, William Gardner (Rita) of Raeford, Peggy Ballance (Jerry) of Goldsboro, and Bruce Gardner (Wanda) of Goldsboro. 
Visitation will be 3-4 p.m. Friday at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Ave. Raeford. 
The funeral will follow at 4 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Kevin Gardner officiating. 
Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

Elizabeth Seago

Elizabeth (Lib) Baker Gibson Seago of Raeford died surrounded by her family at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst on Monday June 8, 2020 at the age of 87.
She was born in Hoke County, November 18, 1932, daughter of the late Governor Vance Baker and Bertie Brown Baker. She was preceded in death by her brother Daniel E. Baker and a sister Edith Baker Crowder. She was a lifetime active member of the Raeford Presbyterian Church and a member of the Raeford Garden Club. She retired from Burlington Industries after 45 year in 2015.
She is survived by two sons, Van Gibson of Raeford and Danny Gibson and his wife Jennie of Raeford; four grandchildren, Beth Gibson Peedin and her husband Jeff, Johnny Gibson, Kimberly Gibson Brock and her husband Jason, and Will Gibson; and four great-grandchildren, Jillian Peedin, Grayson Brock, Harper Brock and Ava Gibson.
A visitation will be held from 10 to 10:50 a.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2020 at the John C. Ropp Fellowship Hall at Raeford Presbyterian Church.
The funeral will follow at 11 a.m. at the church with QRE Herman Autry officiating.
Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

James Workman

James Workman died peacefully in the Emergency Department of Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst with his wife and daughter at his bedside June 4, 2020. He was 82.
He was born November 30, 1937, son of the late John Lee and Gracie Alice Carter Workman at Stollings, Logan County, West Virgina. 
He retired from the U.S. Army in 1979 with 23-plus years of active service, which included three tours in Vietnam. After retirement, he went on to teach at Nashville Auto Diesel College in Nashville, Tennessee prior to moving to Raeford in 1997. He was a lifetime charter member of Ralph A. Pandure VFW Post # 10, life member of DAV Chapter 17, life member of Vietnam Veterans Association, a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rites.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Tracey Lynn Workman, three brothers, Benjamin Franklin, Richard (Joyce), Elba (Freda) Workman, and three sisters, Virlie (Thurmond) Lee, Dora (Jack Fry), and Rosa (Okie Wilson).
He is survived by his wife, Ida Workman of Raeford; daughter, Patti (David) Skomra of Raeford; two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Services and internment will be at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery when COVID19 restrictions that prohibit burial with honors are lifted. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to do so are asked to make donations to Hospice Foundation of Hoke County, P.O. Box 1584, Raeford, North Carolina 28376.

Neil A. Smith

Neil Alexander Smith of Pinehurst, formerly of Raeford, died surrounded by his family on Saturday, June 6, 2020 in his home at the age of 84.
He was born in Hoke County on March 2, 1936, son of the late Clyde Edward Smith and Margaret Eva Clark Smith. He was preceded in death by his son Neil Edwin (Eddie) Smith. He was member of the First Baptist Church of Pinehurst and a former member of the Hoke County Rescue Squad.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years Mary Ellen Jackson Smith of Pinehurst; a son, Gregory Alan Smith (Samantha) of Myrtle Beach; a daughter-in-law, Liz Ward Smith of Garne; four granddaughters, Leslie Batten (David), Amanda Smith, Jackie Loyd (Kenny) and Rebecca Smith; twin great-grandsons, Aaron and Daniel Batten; two sisters, Mary Smith Balch (George) of Raeford, and Margaret Smith Kutz of Wilmington; and a brother, Jerry Clark Smith of Alvin, Texas.
A private memorial service will be held later.
