He was born in Hoke County on June 30, 1932 to the late George Curtis Hales and Mattie Mae Lunsford Hales.
Hales was a faithful member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Raeford. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a founding member of the Rockfish Creek Coon Club. He started hunting at the age of 14 and won numerous trophies with his show dogs.
He was preceded in death by his wife Kathleen Harden Hales, his brothers Curtis Hales, L.G. Hales and Lud Hales, and a sister, Louise Sanders.
He is survived by two daughters Sue Oxendine (Tim) of Aberdeen and Brenda Kellis (Harold) of Raeford; three grandchildren, Mark Lyle (Susanne), Yvette Lyle (Gregg) and Michael Lyle (Amanda); 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Seavy Hales (Lib) of Raeford; and a sister, Eleanor Thomas of Raeford
Visitation is 1:30 until 3 p.m. Saturday November 7, 2020 at the Church of God of Prophecy, 911 West Prospect Avenue, Raeford
The funeral will follow at 3 p.m. with Pastor Brenda Kellis officiating.
Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery with full military honors.
