Lula D. McEachin

Lula Doris McEachin died Friday, July 6, 2018.

She was born on February 14, 1937 to Estella and Mitchell McEachin in Bowmore.

"Doris," as everyone in the family fondly called her—she was known as Lula or Lu by her work family—was the second oldest of five sisters, Maggie Lois, Ruth Vivian, Gladys Louise, and Estella Sandra.

She graduated in 1955 from Upchurch High School where she was a majorette.

She moved to New York shortly after graduating, where she planted her new roots. It was there that she met and married Charles Bernard Holt. From this matrimonial union were born a daughter Verna Denise and a son Jimmy Bernard.

She worked at the Brooklyn House of detention on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.

She decided to go to school to get her bachelor's degree in 1972. It took her 8 years, working during the day and attending college at night. In 1980, she graduated from the College of New Rochelle with a bachelor's degree in the arts.

She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her savior in May of 1979. She continued to work for the City of New York in various agencies and programs, retiring in 1994. She continued to work part time as substitute teacher in the Hoke County school district. She was also a hospice volunteer.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her daughter Verna D. Darby, who was by her side when she passed, and her son-in-law Darrin D. Darby; five grandchildren, Michael Darrin Darby, Darrin Charles Darby, Danielle Elizabeth Darby, Dominique April Darby, and Taylor Mangabang-Holt; and four great-grandchildren, Divino Deon Silverio-Mendez (Dominique), Gabriella Marie Karow Holt (Taylor), McKenzie Darby, and Kaden Darby (Michael).

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Bernard Holt in 1983, her parents, and her son Jimmy Bernard Holt.

Peggy Calloway

 Peggy Ashburn Calloway of Raeford passed away on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst at the age of 88.
She was born in Surry County on January 20, 1930, to the late Fred L. Ashburn and Stella Bruner Ashburn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph J. Calloway and her siblings, Hessie Ashburn, Wade Ashburn, Louise Ashburn Manning and Bobbie Ashburn Stone.
She was a   member of Raeford First Baptist Church. She retired in 1990 from Burlington Industries. After her retirement, she became a tour hostess with American Tours and a volunteer with Liberty Hospice in Raeford. 
She is survived by a son, Larry Calloway and his wife Gail of North Myrtle Beach, SC; two daughters, Nancy C. Morgan and her husband Larry of North Myrtle Beach, SC, and Debra C. McNeill and her husband Billy of Shannon; seven grandchildren, Jason Calloway and his wife Hope, Brad Calloway and his wife Brandi, Jeff Morgan and his wife Beth, Jennifer Morgan, Elizabeth Hodgin and her husband Chad, and Rebecca Crumpler and her husband Ray and Kimberly McNeill. She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held from 10 until 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at Raeford First Baptist Church. 
The funeral will follow at 11:30 at the church with the Rev. Tom Lee and the Rev. Jim Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery.
