R. Wayne Bartrug

R. Wayne Bartrug (Uncle Bubba), 59, of Raeford, passed away at FirstHealth Hospice House on April 26, 2018, following a valiant battle with multiple myeloma. Surrounded by his loving family he left as he lived, upbeat, smiling and staying positive.
Born July 27, 1958 in Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Hugh Bartrug Sr. and Joyce Joll Bartrug. He attended Elizabeth Forward High School, as well as Penn Technical Institute. He worked in electronics while in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Lexington AVT16, and felt very fortunate to work at the launch control center at the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral. He worked for various electronic firms and had a beyond top secret security clearance. He retired as a correction officer at Hoke Correctional Institution in McCain.
He attended the Raeford Presbyterian Church and was a proud member of Masonic Lodge No. 306. He enjoyed building and flying airplanes with The Old Buzzards Flying Club, and had a passion for writing music and poems as well as playing guitars and his harmonicas.
Survivors include his "Mom" Joyce Bartrug of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; sisters Debbie Madsen of Myrtle Beach, Jill (Cliff) Enyeart of Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, and Joyce (Brian) Banks of Raeford; and brother Hugh (Lori) Barturg Jr. of Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania.
Visitation will be held Saturday, April 28, 2018 1-3 p.m. at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Avenue, Raeford.
The funeral with full military honors and Masonic Rites will follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Steven Fitzgerald officiating.

Grover E. Snider

Grover Eugene Snider of Welcome died April 23, 2018. He was born in Rowan County to Elma and Grover Snider on August 13, 1929. He was employed by Burlington Industries and retired from Binning's Building Products. 
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary Lewis Snider; son, Lonnie Snider and wife, Debbie and grandson, Chris Snider; two stepsons, Doug Lambeth and wife, Rhonda, of Raeford,  and David Lambeth and wife Barbara of Lexington; step-grandsons, Ryan Lambeth and wife Haley of Beauford, South Carolina, Kyle Lambeth of Raeford, and Adam Lambeth and wife, Taylor, of Colorado Springs; and his loving dog, Mindy. 
At his request, there will not be a funeral. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Davidson Funeral Home in Lexington on Thursday, April 26, 2018 from 6-8 p.m. In keeping with Gene's giving nature, his organs were donated. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Greater Things Outreach Center, PO Box 37, Welcome, NC 27374, to help feed families in need.

David K. Vest

David Kenneth Vest Sr., 79, of Raeford, formally of Watertown, New York, passed away April 5, 2018.

He was born in Watertown on July 1, 1938 to the late Adra J. and Agnes G. Beach Vest. He attended Watertown schools and worked in steel construction.  He married Patricia Hammond Castle and shared 30 years together. He will be missed and forever loved for his sense of humor and his caring ways. He will be especially missed by his grandson Dade, his "best buddy and pal" as David called him.

Besides his wife Patricia, he is survived by one daughter, Dawn Patchen (Larry); two sons,David Vest Jr., and Charles Vest (Daphanie); two stepdaughters, Stefanie Hoft (George), and Jennifer Hausler (Lonnie); one stepson, Paul Castle (Brenda); several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and five brothers-in-law and five sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his son, William Vest and seven siblings.

Per his wish there will be no services. Memorial donations may be made in his name to the American Lung Association.

Doris Turner

Doris Turner of Raeford passed away at her home on Monday, April 23, 2018 at the age of 83. 
She was born March 13, 1935 in Germany to the late Wilhelm Schoch and Emilie Wurst Schoch. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter Brittany Turner. 
She is survived by her husband Leabert Turner or Raeford; two sons, Ronald Turner and his wife Sandra of Rocky Top, Tennessee, and Kenny Turner and his wife Barbara of Raeford; three grandchildren, Rony Turner, Renee Turner and Erica Turner; and three great-grandsons Phoenix, Greylan, and Drayven. 
A graveside service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, April 28, 2018 at LaFayette Memorial Park West in Fayetteville. 

Curtis L. Rich


Curtis L. Rich, 89, passed away Thursday, April 19, 2018 in his home.
He was born in Robeson County on December 22, 1928 to the late Linwood and Allie Musselwhite Rich. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and worked as a supervisor in textiles before retirement. Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his wife Katie B. Rich, a sister, Sophronia Taylor and two brothers, Odell Rich and Shelton Rich.
He is survived by his sons, Tony Rich and his wife Diane of Sparr, Florida, Paul Rich and wife Diane of Seattle, Washington; daughters, Sharon Skipper of  and Christi Ray, both of McColl, South Carolina; sisters, Margaret Levinson of Fayetteville and Myrna L. Phillips of Dublin; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2018 at Crumpler Funeral Home, Red Springs.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at Crumpler Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Schmidt officiating.
Burial will follow in Alloway Cemetery.
