Toshiko Matyga

Toshiko W. Matyga of Raeford died peacefully in her sleep Monday, September 25, 2023 at the age of 97.

She was born in Hokkaido, Japan on March 15, 1926 to the late Tatsuo and Nobue Watanabe.

She was a dedicated member of the S.G.I Community for over 60 years. She was also a seamstress for most of her life. She was a strong, vibrant, selfless, and amazing woman.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph C. Matyga; and four siblings.

She is survived by her six children, George Shutika (Laura), Sharon Shutika Reynolds (Jerome), David Shutika (Robin), Marcia Matyga, Debbie Matyga, and Vicky Blumer (James); grandchildren, Jessica Zimmerman (James), Jennifer Kerrick (Daniel), David Watson (Darren Chapman), Nikolas Reynolds, Jakeb Reynolds, Adam Shutika, Travis Shutika (Brooke), Sophie Shutika, Joshua Detlie, Isabelle Miller, Lorelei Theaux, Desmond Theaux, Juno Theaux, Lily Dickson and Laci Dickson; great-grandchildren, Wyatt Zimmerman, Scarlett Kerrick, Charlotte Shutika, Jaxon and Maddison Detlie, Michael Shutika, Karen Braquet, Katie Theaux and Nicky Shutika.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 3, 2023 in the Crumpler Funeral Home Chapel in Raeford. In lieu of flowers, please plant a tree in her memory.

Melvin Virgil

Melvin Virgil died September 21, 2023 at the age of 75.

He was born June 16, 1948.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mack and Ollie Mae Virgil.

He is survived by his wife, Sheler Virgil; children: Travis Virgil, Keitran Virgil, Keysher Virgil, Corey Virgil, Emond Virgil; brothers: John Virgil, Walter Virgil, Larry Virgil; seven grandchildren along with a host of other family and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, October 1 at the Mt. Pisgah Resource Center.

Gladys McLean

Gladys McLean died September 21, 2023 at the age of 88.

She was born May 24, 1935.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Johny and Jessie Ree Parker.

She is survived by her husband, Samuel McLean; children: William Dukes, Kathy Dukes, Leonard Dukes, Anthony Dukes; brother, Johnny McLaughlin; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, along with a host of other family and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 27 at the Cape Fear Conference B Headquarters.
