Earnest Lee Yow of Raeford died Thursday, April 9, 2020, at age 73.
Earnest or Peanut, as he was affectionally known, was born on November 26, 1946, son of the late Earnest Rubin and Martha Ellen Taylor Yow. He enjoyed being outdoors hunting, fishing or simply working around his house on various projects. He especially loved to tinkering on machines. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald Brown and his sister, Linda Moore.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl of the home; his son, Earnest Yow Jr.; his grandchildren, Hunter, Kristin, Melissa Yow; his sister, Carol Norton; and his brother William Brown.
The family will have a celebration of his life at their home at a later date.
Care of the family is entrusted to Crumpler Funeral Home of Aberdeen.

Helen J. Drake
Helen Jacobs Drake, 87, of Raeford, died at home surrounded by her family on Sunday, April 5, 2020.
Born December 20, 1932, in Pembroke, she lived in Hoke County for the last 30 years.
She was an adventurous and determined spirit. She left her Lumbee homelands as a teenager for the big city and moved to Baltimore, Maryland. About 10 years later, she moved to Long Island New York where she raised her children and owned a successful hair and beauty salon.
In the mid-1980s, she returned to Hoke County and again opened up a hair salon where she helped many a customer look and feel their best. She created a beautiful home surrounded by hundreds of flowers, trees, plants, and a bountiful vegetable garden. Determined to graduate from high school, she returned to school after many years, and received her high school diploma graduating at the top of her class. She was an avid baker, cook and storyteller, had a sharp wit, and loved to travel to experience new places and adventures. No matter where she lived or what she was doing, she had a giving heart and shared with all.
She is preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Annette Akers; her stepson, Clifton Drake; her father Herman Jacobs, mother Gussie Jacobs, and siblings, Alice Jacobs, Buck Jacobs, Patsy Jacobs Brayboy, and Fred Jacobs.
She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Larry Drake; two daughters, Sharon Woolwine (husband Steven) and Susan Vieira (husband Mike); grandchildren, Angelina Okuda-Jacobs (husband Rollie), Akio Henderson, Shannon Hattersley, Kristie Kumor (husband Patrick), Jacob Hess, Daniel Hess, Amanda Hess, Jacqueline Foster (husband Kevin), Sarah Dobry (husband Evan), Cameron Woolwine, and Hannah Woolwine; five great-grandchildren; her stepson, Rodney Drake (wife Susan); stepdaughter Kimberly Bethel (husband Carl); her sister Mildred Morgan (husband Junior) of Lumber Bridge; and brothers Horace Jacobs of Lumberton, Ernest Locklear of Lumber Bridge, and Tony Jacobs of Pembroke,.
She will be laid to rest near Annette in a private ceremony. A public memorial service will be held once large public gatherings resume in our communities.

Barbara J. Hinson, 77, of Wagram died Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at her home.
She was born in Hoke County on October 25, 1942.She was preceded in death by her husband Ronald Eugene Hinson, two daughters, Melissa Hinson, Melinda Hinson, her mother Virginia Smith Williford, and a brother Leonard Smith and a sister, Jacqueline Allen
She is survived by her son, John Hinson and wife Skye of Poquoson, Virginia; three daughter, Rhonda Bird and husband Harry of Prosperity, South Carolina, Constance "Connie" Weisner and husband John of Kernersville, and Debra Bishop and husband Chuck of McDonough,Georgia; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a brother Fred Smith and wife Jeanie of Flat Rock, formerly of Raeford
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 11, 2020 at Gardens of Faith Cemetery, 5190 Fayetteville Road, Lumberton, with Pastor Roger Burns officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the graveside.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to, Hospice Foundation of Hoke County, P.O. Box 1584, Raeford, NC 28376.

John T. Davis
John T. Davis Jr., 85, of Raeford, passed peacefully at his home on Sunday, March 29.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
A lifelong resident of Raeford, he was born in November of 1934, son of the late John T. Sr. and Leslie Thames Davis. He was the husband of Barbara Turner Davis. John is survived by his two sons, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one son.

Frances P. Colvin
Frances Elizabeth Presgraves Colvin of Raeford died Friday, April 3, 2020 at Open Arms Retirement Home at the age of 92.
She was born in Rappahannock County, Virginia on February 4, 1928, daughter of the late Otha P. Presgraves and Lena Tharp Presgraves. She was preceded in death by her husband James A. Colvin, and two daughters, Ginger Armitage and Tina Butler. She was a longtime active member of the Cumberland County Shrinettes and the Retired Members of Military Association.
She is survived by two daughters, Mamie Bundy of Raeford, and Gloria Colvin of Raeford; four grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held later.
