Shirley A. McLaughlin

Shirley A. McLaughlin of Raeford departed this life on the morning of January 2, 2017 at 88 years of age after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

She was born in Raeford and moved to Greensboro after marriage to her childhood sweetheart, Sterling O. McLaughlin.  Upon retirement as a manager at Rose's, she and her husband returned to Raeford.  Having always been very spiritual, she was baptized as a witness to Jehovah prior to leaving Greensboro, and upon returning to Raeford, remained a faithful member of Jehovah's Witness until her death. 

She was a devoted and caring wife and mother.  She found great joy in family and raising her children, sewing, crocheting, growing flowers, and always had high standards for all her endeavors.  When faced with challenging situations, she demonstrated equanimity, compassion and strength, and without question, embodied grace and humility.She was preceded in death by her parents, Angus and Beatrice Armstrong; sisters, Mary Lillie Armstrong and Thelma Turner; and brothers, Jessie Armstrong, Willie Armstrong, and Alexander Armstrong.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her husband of 69 years, Sterling O. McLaughlin of Raeford; a son, Sterling L. McLaughlin (Francine) of Roanoke, Virginia; son Archie McLaughlin (Marie) of Wallace; daughter Lanette M. Barnes (Bartholomew) of Raeford; son Terry McLaughlin of Greensboro; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at Kingdom Hall in Raeford January 14, 2017.

Juanita Maddox

Juanita Ruth Maddox of Raeford passed away at FirstHealth Hospice House on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at the age of 76.

She was born in Buchanan County, Virginia on May 13, 1940 to the late Henry Boyd and Delta Gent.

She is survived by her husband, Garcia Maddox; a loving and devoted daughter Deborah Barron (Daniel); sons, Gary Maddox (Tracy), Kevin Maddox (Noel), and Ritchie Maddox (Elizabeth); a brother, Ralph Boyd; five sisters, Judy Boyd, Hazel Neely, Brenda Duty, Evelyn Coleman, Jeannette James; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation will be noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday January 12, 2017 at R. L Douglas Cape Fear Conference B Headquarters.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, January 13, 2017 at R.L. Douglas Cape Fear Conference B Headquarters, the Rev. Dr. Steve Fitzgerald officiating. Entombment will be in the Cumberland Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Online condolences may be made at butlerschapel.com

Geneva Richardson

Geneva Richardson died Jan. 5, 2017. She was born on November 30, 1936.

She leaves to mourn two children, Thelma(Ron) Hagans and Bernice(Julius) Davis; three

Grandchildren, Raymond(Latrika) Richardson, Warren(April) Richardson, and

Cassandra(Anthony) Richardson; 11 great-grandchildren, Jaquan, Quincy, Don, Kevin Jr.,

Davondre, Imani, Shakoya, Latoya, Ja'Nyra, and Ariana; and three sistersin-law.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 11 from 1-6 p.m. at Buie Funeral Home. The funeral will be held Thursday, Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. at Buie Funeral Home, with committal at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Eastlawn Cemetery in Raeford.

Josephine Blue

Josephine Blue died January 2, 2017.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Cora Green, Mary Blue and Ella Liles, and two brothers, Charles Blue and John Robert Blue.

She was a great aunt of four generations.

She leaves to cherish her memories a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives.

The funeral was held Saturday, Jan. 7 at 1 p.m. at Buie Funeral Home in Raeford.

Willie Allen

Willie Elliott "Bill" Allen, age 84, of 309 Jones Avenue, Raeford, departed this life on January 7, 2017. 

He was retired from the Postal Service and the U S Air Force. 

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn L. Allen; children, Linda Allen (Arthur) Johnson, James (Mazie) Quick, Cynthia (Gary) Love, Willie L. Allen, Cynthia Allen Coe, Larry (Carolyn) Quick, Sherrice Allen, Michael (Jackie) Allen and Simeon (Emeline) Quick; 23 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one aunt, Matha Lide; one uncle, Charles Howard; 7 sisters-in-law; 4 brothers-in-law; and several god-children, nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

The funeral will be held on Saturday, January 14 at 1 p.m. in the Nazareth Missionary Baptist Church in Wagram. Burial will be in the church cemetery. 

The family will receive friends at the home.

Lucille L. Bullard

Lucille L. Bullard, 90, passed away Friday, January 6, 2017 in Autumn Care of Raeford.
She was born in Robeson County on October 20, 1926 to the late Roosevelt and Emma Locklear. She was a homemaker and a faithful member of Mt. Elim Baptist Church. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Pittman Bullard, a son, Larry Dean Locklear and several brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her children, Johnny Pittman Bullard and Maxine Jones, both of Raeford; Carrie Sue McNeil of Aberdeen; a special granddaughter, Elizabeth (Beth) Jones Skipper, a special niece, Bonnie Bullard Locklear; a special nephew, Jerry Locklear; and many grandchildren and great -grandchildren.
Visitation will be 1-3 p.m. Monday, January 9, 2017 at Mt. Elim Baptist Church in Red Springs.
The funeral will begin at 3 p.m. with Pastors Larry Locklear and Tony Brewington officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Annie Hook

Annie Muriel Odom Hook of Raeford died Monday, January 2, 2017, at her home at the age of 79.

She was born February 1, 1937 in Hoke County to the late Daniel W. Odom Sr. and Annie Welch Odom. She was a member of Pittman Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Irving L. Hook Jr. of Raeford;  her son, Terry Lawrence Hook and his wife Jaine of Camden, South Carolina; and two grandchildren, Jeremy Hook and Shane Hook both of Camden.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 5, 2016 at the Davis Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service, at the cemetery.

Linda Lovette


Linda Sue Dees Lovette of Red Springs passed away in her home on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at the age of 67.
She was born in Cumberland County on February 25, 1949 to the late Robert Yates Dees and Mary Davis Dees. She was preceded in death by her husband, David E. Lovette. She was a member of the Red Springs First Baptist Church. She retired from Peterson Elementary in Red Springs.
She is survived by her husband, Perry L. Jackson of Conway, South Carolina; her daughter, Rhonda Cyr of Watertown, New York; her son, Rodney Maynard and his wife, Tina of Red Springs; daughters, Jennifer Mills and her husband, Matt of Wendell, and Revis Lovette Felts and her husband, Todd of Wilkesboro; her son, David E. Lovette Jr. and his wife, Kim of Grays Creek; sons Darren Jackson and his wife, Amanda of Conway, and Andrew Jackson and his wife, Norma of Loris, South Carolina; her brothers, Malcolm Dees and his wife, Brenda of Hillsboro, Allen Dees and his wife, Lona of Fayetteville, Donnie Dees and his wife, Ruth, and Dan Dees and his wife, Marguerite of Raeford; her sisters, Joyce Connally of Parkton, Allene Stiffel and her husband, Art of Coral Springs, Florida, and Sarah Conoly and her husband, Bobby of Raeford; and 20 grandchildren.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at Crumpler Funeral Home in Red Springs.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at the Red Springs First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bradley Boberg, the Rev. Dr. Mack Hutson, and the Rev. Brandon Dees officiating. Burial will be in the Alloway Cemetery.
