James H. Culp

James "Jim" Henry Culp of the Rockfish Community passed away September 14, 2017 at the FirstHealth Hoke Campus at the age of 86.

He was born in Jefferson County, Alabama on July 17, 1931 to the late Walter Leon Culp and Lillie Belle Arant Culp. He served in the U.S. Army for 23 years and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 2. Following his military service, he taught Junior ROTC in South Carolina. He also volunteered with the Rockfish Community Watch and the Hoke County 4-H and received the Governors' Volunteer of the Year Award. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bennie Lee Brock Culp; his brothers, Charles, Johnny, and Wayne; and his sisters, Lois, Dean, and Opal.

He is survived by his wife, Laura Ross Culp; his son, Gary and his wife, Katie; his grandsons, Edmund and his wife, Melissa, and Mark and his wife Jenna; and three great-grandchildren, Ian, Nate and Karsyn.

The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 18, 2017 at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Rockfish.

The funeral will begin at 11 a.m.m following the visitation. Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery following the service.

Hubert Moss

 

Hubert Melvin Moss, 97, of Aberdeen died Friday September 15, 2017 at Kingswood Nursing Center.

He was born April 25, 1920 in Hoke County to the late Debbie Lee and Sara Louise Poole Moss and was predeceased by his wife Lamelle Kathleen Vanhoy Moss.

He was a long time member of Ashley Heights Baptist Church where he faithfully served as a deacon and in numerous other church positions over the years and was the retired owner of Hubert Moss Construction Company. He proudly served in the US Army 97th Infantry Division during WWII.

Surviving are sons Stephen Larry Moss (Marion) of Aberdeen, Darrell Hubert Moss (Elizabeth) of Aberdeen, Alan Lee Moss of Kernersville and Christopher Brandon Hall of Seven Lakes; daughter Bonita Louise King (Herbert) of Pinehurst; brother Zebedee Vance Moss of Aberdeen; sister Freida Snyder of Aberdeen8 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Sunday September 17 beginning at 2 p.m. in the Ashley Heights Baptist Church fellowship hall with the funeral service in the sanctuary at 3 p.m. with Rev. Kevin Huff officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors.

The family suggest in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund at Ashley Heights Baptist Church, 10351 Aberdeen Road, Aberdeen, NC 28315.

John W. Walker Jr.

John Walter Walker Jr. of Charlotte passed away Thursday, September 7, 2017 at Novant Health Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte at the age of 87. 
He was born in Hoke County on December 25, 1929, to the late John Walter Walker and Ella Tarpley Walker. He was preceded in death by his sister, Catherine McNeill. He served in the U.S. Army and Reserves. He provided insurance to business and residential clients for many years in Mecklenburg County until he retired. 
He is survived by his wife, Arlene D. Walker of Charlotte; a stepdaughter, Joyce Cessna of Florida; a brother, Derry Walker and his wife Jean of Southern Pines; a niece, Cathy Owens and her husband Eddie of Raeford; a nephew, Eddie McNeill and his wife Pat of Raeford; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. 
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, September 17, 2017 at the Raeford Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Steven Fitzgerald officiating. 
The family will receive friends after the service at the graveside. 
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Teresa Odom

Teresa Frederick "TC" Odom of Shallotte, formerly of Raeford, passed away September 9, 2017 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, at the age of 56. 
She was born August 23, 1961 in Moore County to the late Kenneth Alexander Frederick and Frances Quimby Frederick. She is preceded in death by her brothers, Kenneth Frederick and Garry Frederick. She was assistant county ranger with North Carolina Forestry Service in Brunswick County before she retired. She was an avid horseback rider. 
She is survived by her husband Ronny Odom of Shallotte, a son, David Odom or Shallotte, a daughter Brooke Odom (Paul) of Conway, South Carolina, and her sister Jan Conoly of Southern Pines. 
A memorial graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, September 17, 2017 at Shiloh Presbyterian Church Cemetery, with Dr. Mike Odom officiating. 
A visitation will be held after the service at the graveside.
