Eddie Allen Jr.

Eddie Hurley Allen Junior of Raeford, died peacefully on the evening of Thursday, March 12th in Hoke County. He was born in the Haymount Hill area of Fayetteville in 1936 to Esther Spell Allen and Eddie H. Allen Sr. of the Fayetteville Fire Department. After his father's passing, Eddie and his mother moved to Raeford where he graduated from Hoke County High School in 1954.
He served in the North Carolina National Guard before joining the United States Air Force, serving more than 21 years in Louisiana, Newfoundland, Arizona, Germany, and Southeast Asia, reaching the rank of Master Sergeant. Following his retirement from serving his country, he returned home to serve his community as a lieutenant in the Hoke County Sheriff's Department and Raeford Police Department. He also served as a volunteer for several years on the Hoke Rescue Squad, the Pima County (Arizona) Search and Rescue, the Civil Air Patrol, and as a Scout leader for the Boy Scouts of America. He was a life member of the American Legion, the VFW, and the Masonic Lodge in Raeford. He graduated from Fayetteville Technical College with an Associates in Criminal Justice.
He was preceded in death by his father, Eddie, Sr (1948), and his mother Esther Teal (2002), as well as his beloved wife of more than 62 years, Margaret Elizabeth Cole Allen, who passed a little more than a year earlier. He is survived by his four sons, Mike (Janet) of Cary, Dan (Therese) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Dave (Janet) of Ormond Beach, Florida,  and Charles (Xan) of Raeford. He was the grandfather of eight and great-grandfather of three.
The family will receive visitors at the United Methodist Church of Raeford Sunday, March 15 from 2 – 2:45 p.m. with services beginning at 3 pm. Burial will be held afterwards at the Raeford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Raeford United Methodist Church , the Alzheimer's Association, or the Shriner's Hospital for Children.

Jan Thornberg

Jan Carol Parks Thornberg, 65, of Pinehurst, formerly of Raeford, died Thursday, March 12, 2020 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital. 
She was born December 7, 1954, daughter of the late Marshall Lloyd Parks and Janice Britt Parks. She was preceded in death by her brother Steve M. Parks and a sister, Marsha Gail Parks Broadaway. 
She is survived by a brother, Michael Parks (Vera) of Seven Lakes; a sister, Jennifer Parks of Raeford; a brother-in-law, Jim Broadaway of Raeford; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 1:30-2 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at Shiloh Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Rufus McLean and the Rev. Lynn Bullock officiating. 
Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Tommy Harrell

Thomas Glenn (Tommy) Harrell Jr., 82, of Raeford died March 11, 2020 at his home.
He was born on March 10, 1938 in Hoke County, one of seven children of the late Thomas Glenn Harrell Sr. and Daisy Taylor Harrell. He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Ann Harrell, his brother Jerry Harrell, and his granddaughter, Jessica Melton.
He was a member of Raeford Evangelical Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a farmer in Raeford for more than 40 years.
He is survived by his wife Brigitte Hain Harrell of Raeford; a son, Ricky Ward of Raeford; five daughters, Tammy Bell (Rick) of Maryland, Kim Melton ( Jeff) of Raeford, Judy Dicker (Chuck) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Audry Miller ( Lorne) of Perry, Georgia, and Debbie Collins (Brent) of Wingate; and several grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
A visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 13, 2020 at Crumpler Funeral Home 131 Harris Ave. Raeford. 
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 2020 at Raeford Evangelical Methodist Church with Pastor Roger Burns officiating.
Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

Henry Pickler

Henry Hugh Pickler Jr. of Lumber Bridge died Tuesday, March 10, 2020 in his home at the age of 71.
He was born in Moore County on March 16, 1948, son of the late Hugh Pickler and Nora Hardee Pickler. He was preceded in death by his brother Duke Pickler. 
He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was an avid hunter and loved his family dearly.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ronda T. Pickler of Lumber Bridge; son, Terrance Pickler and his wife Jodie of Lumber Bridge; a daughter, Katie Pickler-Rawls and her husband Camron of Lumber Bridge; son Danny Pickler and his wife Megan of Franklin; four grandchildren, Jason Pickler, Noah Rawls, Alexzandria Pickler and Logan Pickler; and a brother, Virgil Pickler of Ashley Heights.
A visitation will be held 10-11 a.m. Friday, March 13, 2020 at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Ave. Raeford.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. following the visitation.

Robert Carpenter

Robert Graham Carpenter, 87, of Deep Gap in Alarka Community died February 25, 2020. He was born in Hoke County to Robert M. and Willa Carpenter. He helped on the family farm in Derby, Richmond County, North Carolina. Later he proudly served our country in the United States Army during the Korean War. After returning he moved to Ocala, Florida where he worked as an electrical contractor. He was very active in St. Marks Methodist Church. He and his wife Lee became part time residents of Deep Gap in the Alarka Community in 1974 and made their permanent home there in 2000. There they made many friends who were like family. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years Lee Carpenter who died January 4, 2012, daughter Diane Regen, and brothers David Carpenter and Carroll Carpenter. He is survived by his daughter, Debbie Terry and husband Lee, and grandson Jordan Terry, all of Raeford; grandson Ron Regen and wife Becky; great-grandson Riley of Columbia, South Carolina; and brothers John Carpenter of San Clemente, California, Joe Carpenter of Thomasville, and Larry Carpenter of Pine Bluff. No services are planned at this time. Crisp Funeral Home is assisting the Family.

W.L. Priest

W.L. Priest of Raeford died Saturday, March 7, 2020 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital at age 68.
He was born in Scotland County on July 17, 1951, the son of the late Walter Priest and Thelma Louise Edwards Priest. He was preceded in death by his sister Louise Priest Harrell.
He is survived by two sons, Christopher Shaun Priest and his wife Rhonda of Pinehurst, and Patrick Alan Priest and his partner Zachary of Raleigh; a granddaughter, Peyton Celeste Priest of Pinehurst; and two sisters, Linda Priest Hendrix of Laurinburg and Susan Priest Tyndall and her husband Steve of Raeford.
A graveside service will be held at 1p.m. Friday, March 13, 2020 at Highland Biblical Gardens with Pastor Toby Neal officiating.

Mina Townsend

Mina Jean Hensley Townsend, 83, died at 2:15 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2020 in Bethesda Healthcare Facility, surrounded by her children.
In her words, she had many happy years as a Christian wife, mother of three and community volunteer.
She was born October 31, 1936 in Huntington West Virginia to Moses and Blanche Miller Hensley. Her family lived in Williamson, West Virginia and she graduated from high school there. She graduated from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia with a degree in elementary education. She was a kindergarten teacher. Her parents were teachers also and instilled in her the love of learning.
She met the love of her life Robert (Bob) Glenn Townsend Jr. on a blind date in Williamson. They married on August 2, 1958 and lived in Louisville, Kentucky, Indianapolis, Indianapolis, and Grayson, Kentucky before settling in Raeford, where he was a family physician for 33 years before retirement.
She was an active member of Raeford United Methodist Church where she served in many different capacities, but she made note of those most important – a Sunday School teacher for more than 20 years and president of United Methodist Women on the local and district level. She was a group leader of Bible Study Fellowship for seven years. She was one of the two women first elected to the Hoke County Board of Education. She was President of the Woman's Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Robert G. Townsend Jr. and a son, Neil Hensley Townsend.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan T. Barnes and husband Glen of Fayetteville; a grandson, Zack of Cary; a son, Dr. Robert G. Townsend III of Fayetteville; and grandchildren, Jacob and Lauren of Fayetteville; two nieces, Dr. Terri Haley of El Dorado Hills, California and Dr. Sherri Crosson of Chesapeake, Virginia; a special nephew, Dr. M. B. Pate II and wife Linda, and their children, Dr. Tess Pate Jordan of Summerfield, and her children Clara and Emmeline and Air Force Major Matthew Townsend Pate.
A visitation with the family will be held from 1 – 1:45 PM on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at Raeford United Methodist Church, 308 N. Main Street in Raeford and the funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Brian Wingo officiating. Burial will be in Raeford Cemetery.

Peggy J. Posey

Peggy J. Posey of Raeford died Saturday, March 7, 2020 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital at age 77.
She was born in Robeson County on May 5, 1942, the daughter of the late Luther Jackson Jr. and Annie Ruth Herndon Jackson. She was preceded in death by her sister, Annette Porter. 
She was a longtime member of Philippi Presbyterian Church and was employed with the Hoke County School System.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Bobby Posey Sr. of Raeford; two sons, Bobby Posey Jr. and his wife Donna of Belleville, Illinois, and James Posey of Raeford; six grandchildren, Kyle Posey and wife Jessica, Chelsea Posey, Zach Posey, Megan Posey Bohl and her husband Terry, Sarah Posey and Seth Posey; six great-grandchildren, Sophia Harris, Maggie Bohl, Jossalynn, Posey, Avery Harris, Ava Molchan and Terry Bohl III; and a sister, Mary Margaret O'Bannon of Wilmington.
A visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at the home, 423 Posey Farm Road, Raeford.
A graveside Service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at Philippi Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Mike Baker officiating.

Lance N. Polege

Lance N. Polege of Raeford died Friday, March 6, 2020 at his home at age 69.

He was born in Merrill, Wisconsin, the son of the late Eldridge and Deloris Polege. He was employed with SpartanNash Company in Lumberton.

He is survived by his wife Paula Polege of Raeford; a sister, Sandy Olsen and her husband Karl of Tomahawk, Wisconsin; and several nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service will be held later.

James A. Cline

James Arthur Cline of Hoke County died Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at First Health Hospice House at age 78.
He was born June 26, 1941 in Isaban, West Virginia, the son of the late Mack and Edna M. Young Cline. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen Nadine Cline. He served in the US Army, 1st Cavalry division in Vietnam from 1965 until 1967.
Survivors are a son, Shawn James Cline and his wife Trista of Hoke County; a daughter, Shannandoah Cline-Mayes and her husband Kelly of Visalia, California; and four grandchildren, Bridget Mayes, Logan Mayes, J'DaLynn Cline and Destiny Cline.
A memorial service will be held later.
