Brenda C. Lawlor

Brenda Chappell Lawlor died on Wednesday, January 23 in her home in Raeford. She was born December 2, 1941 in Winston-Salem to William Elliott and Patricia Ann Chappell. She is survived by her brother, Ralph Chappell; sister, Karen Chappell; son, Tommy Lawlor; daughter, Bridget Parnell; son-in-law, Wayne Hayes; and grandsons, Joel Parnell and Jason Hayes.
After graduation from Reynolds High School in 1960, she received her B.A. degree from American University in Washington, D.C. in 1964. Later she continued post-graduate work at North Carolina Central University in Durham. Following a career with North Carolina Division of Services for the Blind, she worked as a correspondent for the Wilmington Star-News.
Her volunteer activities included membership in Fayetteville Lady Lions, Colonial Dames XVII Century, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Phi Mu Fraternity, Hoke County Friends of the Library, Association for the Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind, and the Raeford Garden Club. She received the J. Marshall Parham Award for Outstanding Work in the Rehabilitation of the Blind. She was honored as one of the "Wonderful Women of Hoke" in 2015 and received the Jefferson Davis Medal for Historical Work by the UDC. She was an active member of St. David's Episcopal Church in Laurinburg.
A memorial service will be held at St. David's on Friday, February 1 at 4 p.m.

Luis A. Betancourt

Luis Armando Chevere Betancourt (SSG, Retired) of Raeford passed away suddenly on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Womack Army Medical Center at the age of 64.
He was born in Puerto Rico on January 26, 1954 to Juan F Chevere and Elba I Betancourt. After proudly serving in the United States Army, where he was assigned as a Military Police K9 handler, he retired and began his second career with the North Carolina Department of Corrections at the Hoke Correctional Institute where he served 16 years. In February 2014, he decided to finally retire and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He leaves behind his wife, Elizabeth Chevere of Raeford; his sons, Luis A Chevere and his wife, Charlene of Raeford, and Francisco I. Chevere of Houston, Texas; his daughter, Ariadna Chevere of Houston; his parents, Juan F. Chevere of Pennsylvania; his mother, Elba I Betancourt and her husband, Francisco Delgado Roque; his brother, Arnaldo Chevere and his wife, Aida of Haines City, Florida; his sisters, Carmen Chevere and her husband Miguel Rey of Haines City, Florida, Carol Muñiz of Allentown, Pennsylvania; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at LaFayette Funeral Home, 6651 Raeford Rd, Fayetteville, NC 28304.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery with full military honors.

Daniel A. McDougald III

Daniel (Danny) A. McDougald III of Rockingham died Sunday, January 20, 2019 at his home at the age of 70.

He was born in Robeson County on Dec.10, 1948 to the Daniel A. McDougald II and Mearl Walters McDougald.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years Rudene W. McDougald of Rockingham; three daughters, Dana Hall of Lumberton, Dania McDougald of Oak Island, and Donna McDougald of Bennettsville, South Carolina; two sons, Daniel McDougald IV of Lumberton, and David McDougald (Susan) of Laurel Hill; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Short (Gary) of Holden Beach, and Brenda Reed (David) Lynchburg, Virginia; and a special nephew, John Reed of Lynchburg, Virginia.

Visitation will be held at the home.

A memorial graveside service will be held 3 p.m. on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at the Alloway Cemetery in Red Springs, with the Rev. William (Cooney) Carlisle officiating.

Marsha N. Moore

Marsha Nell Moore, 72, of Raeford, passed away on January 16, 2019 with her two daughters and sister by her side.

She was born July 9, 1946 in Dekalb, Bowie County, Texas to Lindsay Moore (deceased) and Christine Eastland Moore (deceased). She grew up in DeKalb, with her two siblings, Errie Dale and youngest brother Howard Moore (deceased). She also has three older brothers, Herbert Moore (deceased), J. T. Wooten (deceased) and Frank Hall.

She graduated from Marvin Pines High School in DeKalb, Texas where she was an avid reader and played the saxophone in the school band. Soon after graduating, she moved to Brooklyn, New York City, where she raised her two daughters while attending the Brooklyn College where she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature.

From a very young age, she loved to read and was a lover of knowledge and discovery. She enjoyed the theater, art, visiting museums and libraries, and most of all, writing poetry and short stories throughout her entire life. While she worked as an accounts bookkeeper and communications specialist, in truth, she was both creative writer and poet.

She is survived by two daughters, Kimberly Kristin Moore Williams and Kenjala Nicole "Niki" Moore Pfendler; sister, Errie Dale Moore Reaves; brother, Frank Hall; sister-in-law, Doris Wooten; three grandchildren, Shane, Christine Shanell, and Darius Amaru; and son-in-law, Dean.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines.

Meredith Ashley Linden

Meredith Ashley Linden, 36, of Raeford died Sunday, January 20, 2019 at her residence.

Born in Wake County, she is the daughter of William "Bill" Reaves of Raleigh and Teri Holliday of Raeford.

Her legacy was creating Rocks of Hope.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Jakob Linden; daughter, Lillian "Lilly" Grace Linden of Raeford; two sons, Matthew Connor McClenahan-Linden and Jackson-Paul (JP) Wilder Linden, both of Raeford; stepfather, Joseph Wayne Holliday of Raeford; brother, William "Tre" Reaves and wife Cindy of Ayden; stepbrother, Jacob Holliday and wife Haley of Jamesville; half-brother, Jason Talley and wife Sarah of Cary; maternal grandmother, Polly Davis of Plymouth; and best friend, Jessica Dunn of Fuquay-Varina.

A gathering will be held Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at Pinecrest Funeral and Cremation Services in Hope Mills.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at 3 p.m. at Pinecrest Funeral and Cremation Services in Hope Mills.
