Mary Ann Black

Mary Ann Smith Black of Raeford died Sunday, May 31, 2020 in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center at the age of 68.
She was born in New London, Connecticut on June 18, 1951, daughter of the late Clifford P. Smith and Alta Irene Hempstead Smith. She was preceded in death by her brother Clifford P. Smith Jr. She was an avid animal lover, especially her two cats, Cammy and Boots. She was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years David Black of Raeford; two daughters, Karen Black Mayer and her husband John of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Michelle Black Combies and her husband Christopher of Virginia Beach; a son, Anthony John Black and his wife Kate of Norwich, Connecticut.; four grandchildren, Erik W. Mayer, Caleb G. Mayer, Jordan N. Mayer and Matthew R. Combies; a great-grandson, Lucas G. Mayer; her father, Arthur T. Chappell and his wife Dorothy of Norwich, Connecticut.; her sister, Donna Marie Mansfield of Groton, Connecticut; and three brothers, Clifford Smith and his wife Sandy, Bobby Smith and his wife Jackie and David Smith, all of New Jersey.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2020 at Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street in Fayetteville.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Your Local Humane Society.

Thomas J. Jones

Thomas Jerry Jones of Raeford died Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at the age of 77.
He was born in Hoke County on January 15, 1943, son of the late Thomas Woodrow Jones and Kathleen McInnis Jones. He was preceded in death by his brother Martin (Marty) Jones and his nephew Thomas Weldon Bishop.
He is survived by his sister Jenny J. Bishop and her husband Weldon of Dundarrach; several nieces and nephews; and a son, Sammy Jones of Raeford.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday June 5, 2020 at the Raeford Cemetery. The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery.

Herman L. Gillis

Herman Lacy Gillis, 87, of Statesville died Thursday, May 28, 2020, at his residence. 
He was born in Hoke County, Jan. 17, 1933,son of the late Percy Gillis and Ada Guin Gillis. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Clyde Gillis, Luther Gillis, Louise Hord, Clara Mae Gillis; and a grandson, Joseph Konen. 
He worked in the retail business for many years and retired as the Belk department store manager in Wadesboro. He also co-owned and operated Subway sandwich shops in Wadesboro and Albemarle with his son, after retirement. He also opened Lacy's Treasures, a gift shop in downtown Wadesboro. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Wadesboro and served on numerous church committees. He then moved to Laurinburg. During his 20 years in Laurinburg, he was a member of Laurinburg Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. He joined Forest Park Presbyterian Church in Statesville three years ago and was currently serving as an Elder. He served on the Anson County School Board and served as mayor pro tem of the Wadesboro Town Council. He was a member of the Rotary and Lions Clubs, served on the American Red Cross Board of Directors, the American Heart Fundraising Committee and frequently assisted as a Boy Scout leader. 
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Elsie Moore Gillis; a son, Arthur Newkirk III (Lucretia) of Cary; two daughters, Tammy Konen (Jim) of Fayetteville and Jane Hinson (David) of the home; seven grandchildren, Merica Marengo, Shawn Konen (Christy), Will Konen (Leigh), Lacey McIntyre (Justin), Ashlyn Murray, Logan Newkirk, Luciana Newkirk; and five great-grandchildren, Dominick Marengo, Vyctoria Marengo, Mason Konen, Cale Konen and Ellison McIntyre. 
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 6, at 2 p.m., at Forest Park Presbyterian Church with Pastor Scott Jeffreys officiating. There will be no visitation to protect the health of others.

Reid Bryant

Reid Bryant of Lumber Bridge died Friday, May 29, 2020 at age 74.   
He was born in Robeson County January 14, 1946, son of the late Edgar Bryant and Nancy Cummings Bryant. He was preceded in death by his siblings Margie Bryant, Catherine Bryant Jacobs, Joel Bryant, Joseph Bryant, and Amos Bryant, and his stepmother, Rosie Mae Bryant.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years Wanda Bryant of Lumber Bridge; a daughter, Wyann Bryant Chavis and her husband Marshall of Raeford; four sons, Gary Ray Bryant and his wife Jamie, Reid Bryant Jr. , Mitch Bryant, and Edgar Lee Bryant, all of Raeford; five grandchildren, Wanda Elizabeth Bryant, Mitch Lee Brant Jr, Joseph Chavis, Benjamin Chavis and Marshall Chavis; eight brothers, James Bryant and his wife Dale of Hope Mills, and Ronald Bryant and his wife Josie of Lumber Bridge, Paul Bryant of Parkton, Steve Bryant and his wife Faith of Lumber Bridge, Timmy Bryant of Lumber Bridge, and Jonathon Bryant of Lumber Bridge, Jeremiah Bryant of Whiteville, and St. John Bryant and his wife Shannon of Hope Mills; and two sisters, Polly Jones and her husband Gilbert of Lumber Bridge,  and Diane Cox of Elizabethtown.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Crumpler Funeral Home Chapel in Raeford with Pastor Ronald Bryant officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at the home of Wyann and Marshall Chavis also at Gary and Jamie Bryant.
