Shirley B. Whitaker

Janet Shirley Blue Whitaker, 86, of Greensboro, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014.
She was a Spanish Instructor at Duke University, Associate Professor of Spanish at Mary Baldwin College and Associate Professor of Spanish at UNC-Greensboro for over 25 years.
She was preceded in death by;  son, Brian Cameron Whitaker and brother, Julian H. Blue, Jr.
Survivors are: daughter-in-law, Sally Whitaker Bergquist of Centerville MA; sister, Katherine(Kacky) Fountain and her husband, Richard of Rocky Mount; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Raeford Cemetery with the Rev. Douglas Kelly officiating.

Alton R. Hill

Alton Ray Hill, 66, of Raeford, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014.
Survivors are: wife, Sarah; daughters, Gloria Baxley, Jennifer Miramontes, Paige Baker; sisters, Jimmie Locklear, Ann McRea, Shirley Godfrey, Cathy Guy, Virginia Jones; eight grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. in Saint Pauls Funeral Home chapel in St. Pauls. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery. 
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Clyde E. Register

Clyde E. Register of Raeford died Monday, December 29, 2014 at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst at the age of 79.

He was born in Bladen County on July 12, 1935, to the late Claudie B. Register and Fannie Owen Register. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles Register, C.B. Register, and his sister Betty Register Davis. 

He was a member of the Raeford United Methodist Church, treasurer for the Bob Lewis Sunday School Class, finance and pastor parish chairperson. He was also a member of the Fairmont Masonic Lodge and the Shriners Club.

He retired in 1989 from the A & P Tea Company, after 37 years of service. He then returned to work with the House of Raeford and worked as transportation manager for 26 years.

Survivors are his wife of 62 years, Doris L. Register of Raeford; two sons Ricky E. Register (Vickie) of Oak Island, and Jeffery B. Register (Crystal) of South Port; a daughter, Renee R. Brice (Leamon) of Davidson; eight  grandchildren, Chad Brice (Katrina), Kristen Lakis (Andrew), Kira Harris (Brock), Megan Pierce (Joshua), David Register (Maranda), Jared Register, Cassidy Register and Jeffery Register, four great-grandchildren, Jonah Pierce, Abraham Lakis, Jude Pierce and Lilly Grace Harris; five sisters, Peggy Johnson (Buck) of  Ft. Pierce, Florida, Rachel Thompson (Knox) of Maxton, Pat Kissinger (Jesse) of Goldsboro, Margo Merritt of Ft. Pierce, Florida, and Dale Boyd (Roger) of Spring Lake.

Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at the Raeford United Methodist Church.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at Raeford United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Stephen Castle officiating. Inurnment will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

Joyce A. Blackburn

Joyce Ann Blackburn of Raeford died Friday, December 26, 2014 in FirstHealth Moore Regional at the age of 69.

She was born in Hoke County on November 27, 1945. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.L. Blackburn; her mother, Sadie Jones; and her brother, Claude B. Jones.

She is survived by her daughter, Maxine Blackburn of Raeford; her sons, Randy Blackburn of Raeford, and Julian Blackburn of Goldsboro; her brothers, Earlie Neal Jones and Johnny M. Jones, both of Raeford; her sister, Mary Lou Stuart of Raeford; and one grandchild, Daniel Blackburn.

Visitation will be Tuesday, December 30, 2014 from 7-9 p.m. at Crumpler Funeral Home in Raeford.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m., Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at South Hoke Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Highland Biblical Gardens Cemetery.

Bessie "Rorie" Strother Parks, 82, of Raeford, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2014.
Survived by: Son, Leland; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Rosemary Gibson, 58, of Raeford, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2014.
Survivors are: children, Kassiem, Shawana Miley, Robert Newton, Naomi and Leah; mother, Mary Cooper; siblings, Cleola Thompson, Loretta Cooper-Jones, Bobby, James Jr., Thomas, Gene, Carol, Deborah Cooper, Schartie Hilliard, Curtis Brown.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Dec. 27 at 1 p.m. in Bowmore Tabernacle Holiness Church.

Myrtle McMillian Lowery, 83, of Balfour Road, Shannon, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014.
Survivors are: children, Sandra, Felicia Bullard, Velma Carter, Jennie, Jerry, Beany, Gregory, Vincent Bullard; six siblings; 24 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, Dec. 23 at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Praise & Worship Church. Burial will be in Galilee Baptist Church cemetery, Red Springs.

Catherine B. Oldham

Catherine Brewer Oldham of 4450 Laurinburg Road Raeford died Saturday, December 20, 2014 in her home at the age of 86.
She was born in Hoke County on August 2, 1928, to the late James Taylor and Blanche Brewer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eulus E. Oldham Sr. and two daughters, Betty Lynn Douglas and Lois Mitchell.
She is survived by five sons, James E. Oldham of Raeford, Billy Oldham of Rockingham, B. Lloyd Oldham of Raeford, Eulus E. Oldham Jr. of Raeford, and Thomas Oldham of Raeford; two daughters, Patricia Ann Campbell of Raeford, and Sandra D. Lunsford of Raeford; 14 Grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Crumpler Funeral Home in Raeford from 7-9 p.m. on Monday, December 22, 2014
The funeral will be held at the Church of God of Prophecy, 913 West Prospect Ave. Raeford at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 with the Rev. Randall Snead officiating.

Frances J. Crawford

Frances Jeanette "Williams" Crawford, 66, of Raeford, formerly of Dunn, passed away peacefully Monday, Dec. 15, 2014, in Fayetteville.
She was the faithful daughter of the late Michael and Leola West Williams of Dunn.
Frances was a graduate of Dunn High School. She was God's gift to our family and country. She served in and retired from the U.S. Army. Her basic training was at Fort McClellan, Ala. She served at Fort Lee, Va., Fort Holabird, Md., Fort Bragg, Shape Hos Belgium, Korea and in Grenada with Operation Urgent Fury in 1983. After retirement, Frances was elected VFW's District 8th Commander in 1998 to 1999 and served as the service officer at the VA Hospital in Fayetteville for 8 years.
Frances received the Korea Defense Service Medal, AFEM Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Two Overseas Service Medals and an Army Service Ribbon. She was a true supporter of the military forces and always went the extra mile for them. She traveled across the U.S.A. to VFW meetings and to visit many sick veteran friends.
Survivors are:  brothers John, Mike and Martin Williams; sisters, Sue Williams, Mary Davis, Mattie Gregory, Anne Sherrill and Sallie Norris.
Her family wishes to express our gratitude to the many friends that helped Frances throughout her life and especially the ones who helped her through her battle with cancer. We extend our love to her longtime friend, Dan Armagost.
A military service will be held Saturday, Dec. 20  at 2 p.m. in Skinner & Smith Funeral Home chapel, 905 Erwin Road, Dunn. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Dunn. Family will receive friends prior to service from noon to 2 p.m.

Jordan Adaran Smith, 3 year old son of Joshua, of Raeford, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2014.
In addition to his father, he is survived by: His godparents, Terence and Monique Gaines, who cared for him; siblings, Lexis, Isaiah and Jaiden; and grandparents, Wanda, Taylonn Coley, Sharon and Ronnie McSwain

Lannie A Horne

Lannie Ada Horne, 95, of Fayetteville, passed away Friday, Dec., 12, 2014.
Mrs. Horne was born Feb. 4, 1919, in Dillon, S.C., to Alexander and Zilphia Scott.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry Horne, and three children, Jerry, Margaret and Kenny.
Survivors are:  her three sons, Ronald Horne (Sandra) of Lumber Bridge, Stanley Horne of Fayetteville and Craig Horne of Hope Mills; three grandchildren, Dana Horne, Christy Horne and Kevin Horne; and three great-grandchildren, Leanna Carter, Joshua Thomas and Destiny Carter.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home. Burial will be in Fairmont City Cemetery

Woon Sun "Doris" Grubb, 80, of Raeford, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2014.

Nettie Crowley

Nettie Deese Crowley of Aberdeen died December 15, 2014 at the age of 87.
She was born on March 22, 1927 in Union County to the late Eleby and Elsie Connell Deese.
She was a founding member of the Corner Stone Baptist Church and was an active member of the Ashley Heights Baptist Church. She also was a past member of the Eastern Star, Southern Pines Chapter (Magnolia chapter #26) She and her husband Daniel Crowley Sr. owned and operated the Clam Box and later opened the Park-N-Eat in the early sixties.
She was preceded in death by her husband Daniel Crowley and her son Daniel (Danny) Crowley, Jr.
She is survived by two daughters, Terry C. Scott and her husband Chuck of Aberdeen; Sherry Lucas and her husband Mike of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; a sister Frances Crayton of Concord; five grandchildren, Dee Crowley and his wife Lynn, Cristy Scarboro and her husband Michael, Kimberly Scott and her husband Will, Kevin Scott and his wife Sheryl, Danaka Bunch and her husband Lee; and eight great-grandchildren, Katlyn Scott, Heath Scott, Chesney Crowley, Hunter Scott, Colt Scott, Parker Crowley, Luke Scarboro, and Emmy Scarboro.
Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at Ashley Heights Baptist Church, Aberdeen.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Donnie Gillis officiating.

Randall Ashburn

Randall Ashburn of Raeford died Monday, December 15, 2014 in St. Joseph of the Pines at the age of 83.
he was was born in Surry County on December 21, 1930 to the late Arthur and Nannie Ashburn. He was a member of the Raeford United Methodist Church. He was the manager of Raeford Oil Company before retiring. He was also a retired volunteer firefighter with the City of Raeford Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife, Loriece L. Ashburn of Raeford; his daughter, Kathy A. Archer (Charles) of Holly Springs; his son, Randy D. Ashburn (June) of Concord; his sister, Betty Jane Upchurch (Julian) of Durham; and four grandchildren, Christopher Archer, Kaitlyn Archer, Dillon Ashburn, and Nicole Ashburn.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. at the Raeford United Methodist Church on Friday, December 19, 2014.
The funeral will begin at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary with the Rev. Dr. Stephen Castle officiating. Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

Mildred Winburn

Mildred Wadkins Winburn of Raeford died Saturday, November 29 in FirstHealthMoore Regional Hospital at the age of 88.

 

She was born in Richmond County on June 26, 1926 to the late John and Edna D. Wadkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, William George WinburnSr and her son, William George Winburn, Jr. She was a loving and caring person, and member of the Raeford United Methodist Church.She retired from Burlington Industries after more than 40 years of service.

She is survived by her daughter, Georgia Carol Winburn of Aberdeen; her sisters, Doris Marsh and her husband, Ken of Statesville and Joy Johnson of Greenville, SC

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Ave, Raeford, NC.

The funeral will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at Raeford UMC, 308 N. Main Street, Raeford, NC with the Reverend Dr. Ray Harris and Reverend David Heath officiating. Burial will be in the Springhill Cemetery in Wagram.

James Rockholt

James Matthew Rockholt, 27, of Raeford, passed away Thursday, November 27, 2014 in Highsmith Rainey Hospital in Fayetteville.

 He was born in Moore County, NC on September 9, 1987 to George Rockholt and Beverly Taylor. He attended Hoke High School and enjoyed playing video games and listening to music. He loved his family, especially his special nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his mother, Beverly Taylor of the home; his father, George Rockholt and wife Linda of Raeford; brotherDavid Rockholt (Missy) of Laurinburg; step brother, Christian Craig of Raeford, Kevin Craig of Fayetteville and Justin Craig (Daisy) of Ft. Eustis, VA; step-sister, Leeanna Craig of Raeford; maternal grandparents, Jesse and Patsy Taylor of Raeford; a special niece, Brianna Rockholt of Laurinburg; special nephews, Davion and Josiah Rockholt, both of Laurinburg and a host of aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday, December 1, 2014 at Raeford Evangelical Methodist Church, 379 W. Palmer Street, Raeford, NC 28376.

The funeral  will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Raeford Evangelical Methodist Church with Pastor Roger Burns officiating.

Burial will follow in the Raeford City Cemetery.

Margaret Davis

Margaret Lytle Davis, age 90, passed away on November 27, 2014. She had lived most of her life in Raeford until 2011 when she moved to Kannapolis with her daughter and family. She graduated in 1942 from Hoke High School. After high school she lived in Detroit, Michigan where she worked for the Army Signal Corp during the war years. Returning home, she worked at the Hoke County Home Extension Agency, Hostetler and McNeill Attorneys at Law, Raeford Savings and Loan, Progressive Savings and Loan, and New Century Bank. She retired in 1989 at the age of 65, then went back and continued to work for 16 more years at New Century Bank. She received the Employee of the Month Award in October 2007 for "a shining example of neighbor helping neighbor" from New Century Bank. Due to health reasons, she had to retire again in November 2007. Her work ethic was unsurpassed. She married Chalmers B. Davis, of Raeford in 1946 and they had one daughter, Deborah.
While in Raeford, she enjoyed her friends and her church,ford Presbyterian Church. She volunteered for Hospice of Hoke County, which her sister Ruth L. Phillips helped found in Hoke County.
She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Davis Helms, as their "Aunt Margaret."
The family will receive visitors Sunday, November 30 from 2-3 p.m. at the John Ropp Hall at Raeford Presbyterian Church in Raeford, followed by by the funeral at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary, with burial following the service at the Raeford Cemetery.

Harold "Buzz" E. Stone

Harold "Buzz" E. Stone Jr. DDS, 73 of Jacksonville, Florida died Tuesday, November 18, 2014.
He spent several summers in Raeford. He was the son of Harold and Elizabeth Stone and grandson of M.B. and Annie McFadyen Warren. He remembered the good times at Robert and Mamie Gatlin's pond. He was raised in Falls Church, VA and attended UNC undergraduate and dental school, served in the Navy for a few years and then opened a dental office in Jacksonville, FL. He enjoyed all water sports and had a power boat, jet ski and sail boat over the years.
Survivors are: cousins, Chan Roberts, Mary Roberts Shapiro and pat Hood McNeill ; aunt Jennie Warren Hood and a host of friends.
A memorial/graveside service will be held at a later date.

Barbara J. McKinnon, 74, of 409 South Magnolia St., died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014.

Dewey Lee Suggs, 73, of Raeford, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014.
He was a Navy veteran.

Shelby Strong

Shelby Strong, 73, of Raeford, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
She was born on Sept. 23, 1941, to the late Mr. Preston Evers and Mrs. Thelma Wilkins Evers.
Mrs. Strong was preceded in death by her sister, Clara Mae Owens and husband Odell Owens, and brother, Gary Evers.
Survivors are:  her husband, Michael Strong of Raeford; sister-in-law, Pauline Evers of Lumberton; uncle, Henry Wilkins and wife Dixie of Wilmington; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and two good friends, Sarah Beth Lytch of Fayetteville and Mary Morrow of Raeford.
During her 30 year career in education, she taught in many positions from elementary to the college level. After retirement, she volunteered her time with Southeastern North Carolina Radio Reading Service and with hospice care. She held a special place in her heart for Contact of Fayetteville and Fayetteville Urban Ministries.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, 2014. A memorial service conducted by Minister Sonny Kelly will follow at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Sullivan's Highland Funeral Service & Crematory. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2014, in New Hollywood Cemetery in Lumberton.

Carol L. McCoy

Carol Locklear McCoy, 49, of 516 6th Ave., died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2014.
Survivors are: sons, Jamel Gates, Lamarve and Darrell; sisters, Janie Dupree, Janice Daniels and Hattie Riggins; brothers, Carl, Jamie and Jimmy; and 10 grandchildren.
The funeral was held Saturday. Nov. 15 at  2 p.m. Saturday in Buie Funeral Home chapel in Raeford. Burial was in McLaughlin Chapel Church cemetery.

Phoebe Jordan

Phoebe Elizabeth Jackson Jordan of 824 Backwoods Lake Road, entered Heaven Saturday, November 15, 2014 at her residence at the age of 94.
She was born in Sampson County on July 16, 1920, to the late Wiley B. and Virginia Kyle Jackson. She was preceded in death by her husband, a WWII Veteran, Garth McCoy Jordan, and her granddaughter Elizabeth Carol Bunce Reynolds.
She was a member of Camp Ground United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Golden Elite within the Church. She was the past president of the American Business Women's Association (Scotch Plaid Chapter) and their Woman of the Year. She was also a member of the Traveling Lamplighters. At age 74 she became a licensed foster parent and cared for and loved 43 foster children. Among her hobbies were ballroom dancing, quilting, baking pound cakes for others and traveling with her daughter and son-in-law. Hergreatest talent was the ability to love others. She shared this gift with everyone. Her presence is gone, but her love remains.
She is survived by her daughter Carol Bunce (Jimmy) of Raeford; niece/surrogate daughter, Lynn Jane Elmwood of Waldorf Maryland; three grandchildren, James Franklin Bunce (Sherry K) Ricky Wayne Bunce, and Donald Andrew Bunce (Stephanie); five great-grandchildren, Amber Elise Davis(Brian), Kristine Anne Reynolds, Victoria Nicole Reynolds, Wade Everly Bunce, Carolyn Ashley Bunce; and a step-great-grandchild Jacob Mitchell Hasinger.
Visitation will be 1 until 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2104, prior to the service at Camp Ground UMC Church, 4625 Camp Ground Rd. Fayetteville, NC 28314.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m.
Interment will be at LaFayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street, Fayetteville.

Retired Army Staff Sgt. George Edmond Gagnon Jr., 71, of 808 S. Buckeye Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014.
Survivors are: wife, Cristine; daughters, Irina and Alliah; brothers, Bruce and Paul; and sister, Deborah.
A graveside service will be held Friday, Nov. 14 at  10 a.m. in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake. Visitation will be from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Friday at the cemetery.

Marguerite N. Vivian

Marguerite Norris Vivian of Pinehurst, formerly of Raeford, died Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at Fox Hollow Senior Living at the age of 97.
She was born August 11, 1917 in Hoke County to the late Rembert Williamson and Bertha Burney Williamson. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Richard Alton Norris and William W. Vivian. She was a member of the Raeford United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women. She retired from the civil service with 35 years of service as an administrative officer of U.S. Army Communication Command Agency.
She is survived by her daughter Kitzy N. Bundy and her husband Franklin of Southern Pines; two grandchildren, Richard Jones of Winnabow, and Ashley Posey and her husband Mark of Raeford; and one great-granddaughter, Savannah P. Starling and her husband Dustin of Lumber Bridge.
Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Friday, November 14, 2014 at Raeford United Methodist Church.
The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Stephen Castle officiating. Interment will be in Highland Biblical Gardens.

Kathleen F. Bartch

Kathleen Fields Bartch of Red Springs, died Friday, November 7, 2014 at Autumn Care of Raeford, at the age of 87.

She was born in Robeson County on April 19, 1927 to the late James Autry Fields and Katie Ange Fields. She was a preceded in death by her husband, Glen Lawrence Bartch, Jr., a son, Glen Lawrence Bartch, III and her sister Bobbie F. Meinert. She was member of the Hope Mills Pentecostal Holiness Church since 1980.

She is survived by two sons, Robert James Bartch and his wife Wanda of Red Springs, and Michael Scott Bartch and his wife Maggie of Raeford; a  brother, Ronald Fields and his wife Elaine of Lumber Bridge; a sister Juanita F. Livingston of Raeford; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 9, 2014 at Alloway Cemetery, North Vance Street , Red Springs, officiated by the Rev. Elton Bryan, directed by Crumpler Funeral Home in Red Springs. Family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery.
