Wayne Byrd Jr.

Wayne Byrd Jr. of Raeford passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at the age of 58.
He was born November 29, 1959 in Robeson County. He is preceded in death by his father Hubert Wayne Byrd Sr. He graduated from Roffler Barber College in Charlotte in 1979. He collected antiques and loved riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sherryl Smart Byrd of Raeford; his mother, Frances Clark Byrd -Wood of Raeford, three brothers, Tony Byrd and Richard Byrd and his daughter, Christine, and Robin Byrd and his wife Theresa and his son Austin, all of Raeford; and his beloved dogs, Gracie and Sophie
The family will receive friend 3-3 p.m. Sunday, January 21, 2018 at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Avenue, Raeford.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. at Crumpler Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Toby Neal officiating.

Robert L. Logner

Captain Robert Louis Logner, USN, Ret., 92, died January 14, 2018.

He was a native of Millstadt, Illinois and retired in Pinehurst after a career in the US Navy of 32 years.  He served in three wars and had command of three ships during his career including several tours at the Pentagon.  He is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and the National War College in Ft. McNair, Virginia.  After retiring from the Navy, he started American Nursery and Landscaping in Pinehurst which he later sold.

He is survived by his wife Marylin Logner of the home. Also surviving are his daughter Kim Logner-Younger (Cole), and grandchildren Codie and Casey of Nashville.  He is also survived by step-daughter Carmen Honeycutt (Mel) and their children Reagan and Drew of Raleigh and a step-son Frank Fowler (Lori) and their children, Brook and David of Winston-Salem.

A memorial celebration will be held Saturday, January 20 at 2 p.m. at Pinehurst United Methodist Church, 4111 Airport Rd. in Pinehurst. A private burial will follow.

Barbara Taylor

Barbara Jean Taylor of Lumber Bridge passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2018 in her home at the age of 77.

She was born in Scotland County on October 16, 1940 to the late Eugene and Lunette Cox Driggers. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her first husband Everette Garrison and a son, Alan Garrison.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur Taylor of Lumber Bridge; three sons, Joseph Garrison and wife Jackie, Tim Taylor and wife Rhonda, and Ronnie Taylor and wife, Alli; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Iris Salzer, Ann Radford, and Wanda Bentz; and several nieces and nephews whom she loved like her own children. 

The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 18, 2018 from 10-11 a.m. at Crumpler Funeral Home-Raeford. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in the Highland Biblical Gardens Cemetery.

Frances Clark

Frances Evelyn Cole Clark, 83, gave up her fight to go to her heavenly home on Thursday, January 11, 2018. 
She was born in Scotland County on October 8, 1934 to the late Dan Cole and H. Naomi Hatcher Cole. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gaston M. Clark Sr. 
She is survived by her partner, Samuel Bullard; her son, Gaston McPhaul "Mac" Clark Jr. and his wife, Robbi of Northern Ireland; her daughters, Teresa "Diann" Shepley and her husband, Raymond of Raeford, and Lisa Jo. McKeithan Young and her husband, Guy of Raeford; seven grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. 
The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 20, 2018from 1-3 p.m. at Crumpler Funeral Home in Raeford. 
The funeral will begin at 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

Frances D. Young

Frances Dillworth Young, 90, of High Point, died on January 10, 2018. She was born in Kinston, on December 31, 1927 to Avery Lawson and Cora Cundiff Dillworth. She graduated from Clemmons High School. She was a member of Home Moravian Church and was active in the Women's Fellowship, Candle Tea, Mary Ann Fogler Service League, and Senior Friends. She was a longtime volunteer at the N.C. Zoological Society. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, a sister, her husband Thomas W. Young, and son Thomas "Worth" D. Young. Surviving are two daughters, Jayne Frances Young of Raeford, and Malia Young Shelton and husband Richard A. Shelton of High Point.

There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 16 in Salem Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends following the service in the Parlor at Home Moravian Church.

Willie E. Kelly Jr.


Willie Edward Kelly of Covington, Georgia, formerly of Raeford, passed away January 11, 2018 at Emory University Hospital Towers, Atlanta at the age of 55. He is preceded in death by his father Willie Edward Kelly Sr. and his mother Annie Myrtle Quick-Monroe.
He graduated from Hoke County High School, Class of 1980, attended DeVry University, and graduated from Massey Business College, Atlanta.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years Sharon Kelly of Covington, Georgia; two daughters, Shalexicia Kelly and Shasmine Kelly  of Covington; three grandchildren, Forrest, Madison and Natalie Allen of Covington; two sisters, Mavis Livingston (Michael) of Fairmont, and  Darlene Kelly-Gates (James) of Raeford; sisters-in-law, Sylvia Chatman of Covington, and Vickie Chapman of Madison, Georgia; brothers-in-law, Jimmy Moses Williams of Covington,  Michael Chapman (Melissa), Eddie Moses Chapman (Stacy) of Madison, and Elgin Chapman (Sonya) Winterville, Georgia; stepfather, John Buddy Monroe of Raeford; and father-in-law, Joe W. Hart of Decatur, Georgia.
Visitation will be January 18, 2018 at Gregory B. Levett and Sons Funeral Home, Rockdale Chapel, 1999 Hwy 138SE Conyers, Georgia from noon to 8 p.m.
The funeral will be Friday, January 19, 2018 at 11 a.m. at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, 6400 Woodrow Rd. Lithonia, Georgia 30038

James Tapp

James B. "Jim," 75, of Glen Allen, Virginia, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on January 8, 2018. 
He was born May 5, 1942, in Rocky Mount. He was a graduate of Mars Hill College, where he met Carol. They were married in 1967. He held accounting and financial leadership positions at Export Leaf Tobacco Company and Famous Foods of Virginia before founding Electronic Tax Filers in 1994. He treated his clients as friends and the business thrived for more than 20 years. He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing, playing golf and working in his yard. He and Carol enjoyed traveling together, especially their annual trip to Holden Beach with their children and grandchildren. 
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jill Melinda Tapp and brother, William Tapp. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carol White Tapp; and his children, Jeffrey Campbell Tapp (Justine) and Amy Tapp Wright (Todd). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Joshua and Connor Tapp and Jillian, Berkeley and Harper Wright, who adored their Papa. His sixth grandchild is due in May. He is also survived by his brother, Tommy Tapp. 
A memorial service was held on Friday, January 12, at 11 a.m. at the Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad Street, Glen Allen, Va. 23060 The family held a private interment on Saturday, January 13.
