Bertha M. Morrison

Bertha M. Morrison, 70, of 714 S. Parker Church Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012.
Survivors are: daughter, Christine Allen; sons, Jerry, James and Timothy; siblings, Ann, Daisy, Hattie, Gennia, Sheila, Jamie, David, Larry and Frankie; six grandchildren.
The funeral was held Friday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. in Mount Pisgah Baptist Church. Burial was in church cemetery.

Wendell Schipper

Retired U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Wendell E. Schipper, 82, of Raeford, passed away in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, on Monday, Feb. 13, 2012.
Mr. Schipper was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patty A. Schipper; and two grandsons, David Schipper and Paul Schipper.
Survivors are: sons, Carl Schipper and Earle Schipper; daughter, Marceal Johnson; stepdaughter; Lynnette Fingland; grandchildren, Eddie Schipper, Chris Schipper, Mandy Schipper, Jenny Conner, Jimmy Denny, Michael Johnson, Karissa Gallagher, Sierra Gallagher, Sara Cortez Schipper; 15 great-grandchildren; and sister, Karen Brewer.
The Funeral was held on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Adcock Funeral Home & Crematory in Spring Lake, followed by the burial in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake at noon with military honors.

Nancy C. Conoly

Nancy Cole Conoly, 81, passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, February 14, 2012.
She was born in Wagram to Burnice B. Cole and Pearl S. Cole. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Rebecca Conoly Jones. She was a member of Raeford United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her loving husband J.R. (Jimmy) Conoly of Raeford; her oldest daughter, Debora C. Adams and husband Harley Adams Jr.; her youngest daughter, Nancy L. (Cindy) Conoly; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Ave, Raeford, NC 28376.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 16, 2012 at the Raeford United Methodist Church with the Rev. Adolph Smith officiating.
Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Raeford United Methodist Church.

Lewis E. Jones Sr.

Lewis Edward "Ed" Jones, Sr. of Raeford died Saturday, February 11, 2012 in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center at the age of 79.
He was born in Orangeburg County, South Carolina on May 10, 1932 to the late Frank Jones and Carrie Sue Austin Jones. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia E. Jones. He retired from the US Army as Command Sgt. Major in 1976. He was the owner and operator of Star Gun Kennels and Shooting Preserves. He was a member of Pittman Grove Baptist Church where he served as a former deacon.
Survivors include his wife, Mary E. Jones of Raeford; two sons, Lewis E. "Eddie" Jones, Jr. and wife Jeanne of Raeford, and Daniel E. "Danny" Jones of Raeford; three grandchildren, Medina Phillips, Ashley Valley, and Joseph E. Jones; two great-grandchildren, Chance Jones, and Jakobie Jones; and a sister, Catheryn J. Green of Crystal River, FL.
A memorial service will be 2p.m. Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Pittman Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Williams officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

David L. Atkinson

David Lindsey Atkinson, 47, of Wilmington passed away Sunday February 12, 2012 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He was born November 24, 1964 to the late Dorothy Jones Hayes. He is preceded in death by his brothers William, Bert (Charlie), and Howard Hayes all formerly of Raeford.
He was a unique person, born hearing impaired, and learned to communicate by sign language and graduated from Morganton School for the Deaf in Morganton. He was an employee at K & W Cafeteria for the past 18 years, and was loved by all who knew him.
He is survived by his father James Atkinson (Gudrun) of Spring Hill, Florida; a sister Shirley H. Honeycutt (Lloyd); a brother James Hayes (Tami); aunt Louise (Ken); uncle R.B. Jones; and many nieces and nephews. He especially adored his great niece and nephew Katelyn and Michael Gieschen.
The funeral will be conducted on Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 6 p.m. at the Seaside Chapel, with visitation to follow.
Burial will be Friday, February 17, 2012 at noon at Raeford Cemetery.

Margaret Newton

Margaret Elizabeth Wood Newton, 92, of Fayetteville, passed away on Sunday February 12, 2012. She was born April 11, 1919 in Hoke County to the late Thaddeus Graham Wood and Flora Margaret Monroe Wood. She is preceded in death by her husband Edwin David Newton, Sr and a son, Edwin David Newton, Jr; a brother, James G. Wood and sisters Lela W. McInnis and Hazel W. Smith. She was a lifelong member of Galatia Presbyterian Church and a recipient of the Presbyterian Women's Honorary Life Membership. She was a homemaker, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
The family will receive friends Tuesday February 14, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. in Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home, and the funeral will be conducted Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 11 a.m. in Galatia Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Shuford White and the Rev. Beth Faulk officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Survivors include her daughters, Margaret Ann Newton Shannon and husband Eugene H. Shannon of Raeford; Patricia Elizabeth Newton Hurt and husband Jeffery W. Hurt of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Louise Wood Reynolds of Raeford; nine grandchildren: 17 great-grandchildren; and two caregivers, Julia Zabala and Elaine Minshew.
