Larry A. Smith

Larry Arthur Smith age 59 passed away Friday, March 15, 2013 in Leesburg, Florida.
He was born in Arabia, North Carolina and moved to the Lisbon, Florida area more than 10 years ago from Raeford. He spent his career as a firefighter in Hoke County, North Carolina for more than 25 years and retired as a captain with the department. For the last 10 years he worked as a mechanic for Fosters Auto Salvage in Leesburg, Florida. He was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church in Raeford.
He is survived by his daughters, Mary Ann Bennett of Lisbon, Florida; Jennifer Tobias, of Hope Mills; a son, Shawn Smith of Covington, Virginia; brothers, John Smith, Don Earl Smith, Roger Smith, and Tommy Smith all of Raeford; a sister, Caroline Smith of Raeford; six grandchildren, – Courtney, Kayla, Mark, Sarah, David, and Candace; and four great-grandchildren, Sophia, Layla, Presten, and Julian.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 23 from 2-3 p.m. at the Raeford Evangelical Methodist Church.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013 at the Raeford Evangelical Methodist Church with the Rev. Roger Burns officiating. Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

James McCall

James McCall, 95, of Raeford, died Monday, March 18, 2013.
Survivors are: daughter, Janice Grace; sister, Annie; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Sat. Mar. 23 at 2 p.m. in Mt. Calvary Church of God. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Viewing is today, Mar. 22 from 2 to 7 p.m. at Doby Funeral Home in Raeford.

Ruth M. Thompson

Ruth M. Thompson, 88, of Raeford, died Tuesday, March 19, 2013.
Survivors are: sons, Mark, Beatty, Gregory, Harold, Anthony and Stanley; daughters, Oglatha, Melissa and Jacqueline; sister, Naomi; 19 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Fri. Mar. 22 at 2 p.m. in Cape Fear Conference B Headquarters in Raeford. Burial will be in Freedom Chapel Church cemetery.
Viewing will be today, Mar. 21 from 1 to 7 p.m. at Buie Funeral Home in Raeford.

Beryl R. Page

Beryl Riddle Page, 82, of 520 Camden Road, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013.
A "Celebration of Life Service" will be held Fri. Mar. 22 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of McNeill Mackie Funeral Home in St. Pauls, by Rev. Shuford White. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 on Friday at the funeral home. James E. Easterling

James Edward Easterling of Southern Pines, formerly of Raeford died Tuesday, March 5, 2013 in FirstHealth Hospice and Palliative Care at the age of 80.
He was born in Scotland County on August 2, 1932 to the late Robert D. Easterling and Beatrice Laviner Easterling. He was preceded in death by his former son-in-law, C.S.M. David S. Farmer, Sr. He was a member of Shiloh Presbyterian Church, The Lions Club in Aberdeen, and the Woodmen of the World. He served in the North Carolina National Guard for six years. He was in management for several textile companies. He was the owner and operator of Superior Auto Sales in Raeford.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Ruby Cole Easterling of Southern Pines; his daughter, Debbie Farmer Lussier and her husband, Tim of Whispering Pines; a grandson, David "D.J." Farmer and his wife Lindsey of Southern Pines; two great-grandchildren, Trey and Raygan Farmer; step-grandchildren, Jason and Heather Burley and their children Camryn and Ella Burley, Justin and Lindsay Smith and their son, Keller Smith.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. March 7, 2013 at Shiloh Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Stephen Hannah officiating. Entombment was in the Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

James (Jim) Shankle

James (Jim) Eli Shankle, Jr. of Raeford died Monday, March 18, 2013 in FirstHealth Moore Regional at the age of 73.
He was born in Hoke County on August 17, 1939 to the late James Eli Shankle, Sr. and Annie Currie Shankle. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force, where he retired as a master sergeant. He was an avid fisherman as well as an automobile and racing enthusiast. He was a unique person of strong character.
He is survived by his son, James Eli Shankle, III and his daughters, Flora Ann Shankle Misiaszek and Helen Jane Shankle, all of Massachusetts. He is also survived by his brother, William (Bill) Shankle of Raleigh, and his sisters, Anne Shankle Wright and husband, Fletcher, of Charlotte and Donella Shankle of Columbia, South Carolina; his former wife, Victoria Johnson Shankle of Massachusetts; three grandchildren, Gina, Elisha, Davis; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 22, 2013 in the Raeford Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends after the service at the graveside.

Neil Baker

Neil A. Baker, 59, of Onawa, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at a Sioux City hospital.
The son of Elwood and Reeta (McMillan) Baker, he was born at home in Raeford. He was raised and educated in North Carolina. He graduated from Hoke High School.
On June 20, 1975, he was united in marriage to Elsie Murdock in Dillon, South Carolina. In that same year, they moved to Iowa where they made their home until moving back to North Carolina in 1982. In 1991, they returned to Iowa and have lived in Onawa since 2005. He worked in maintenance at Waldbaum's then at John Morrell and he currently worked as a driver for Gerhold Concrete.
He enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren, going to auctions and looking for old items, target shooting, building model rockets, listening to music and caring for their dogs. Most of all Neal enjoyed being with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie of Onawa, Iowa; one son, John Baker and wife Kecia of Onawa and their children Che and Chris; two stepdaughters, Melissa Williard and husband Mike of Wake Forest, and their children Benjamin and Jared and Vicki Gill and husband Kenny of Fort Bragg, and their children Brianna and Haley; his mother, Reeta Baker of Raeford; one sister, Faye Baker of Fayetteville; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Elwood Baker; one brother, Doug Baker; and one sister, Caroline Baker.
A memorial service was held Saturday, March 16 at First Christian Church in Onawa with Minister John Sears officiating. No visitation is planned. Online condolences may be expressed atwww.rootfuneralhomes.com.

Jule H. McLauchlin

Jule Hurst McLauchlin, 89, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at her residence at River Landing at Sandy Ridge in Colfax, North Carolina.
She was born in Fort Valley, Georgia. on April 11, 1923 to the late Samuel Thomas Hurst, Jr. and Jule Hunter Hurst. She lived in Fort Valley as a child. After the death of her parents, she moved to Charlotte, where she made her home with her aunt and uncle, James Norman Pease and Eddie Hunter Pease. In 1951 she married Hugh Charles McLauchlin, Sr. They made Greensboro their home in 1961 and she lived there until moving to the Presbyterian Home of High Point and then to River Landing at Sandy Ridge. She graduated from Central High School in Charlotte and Women's College, now UNC-G. She was active in the community where she was a loyal member of Guilford Park Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Women, the Guilford Battle Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the David Caldwell Log College Acquisition Team and the Jr. League of Greensboro.
In addition to her parents and her aunt and uncle, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Charles McLauchlin and her brother Edward Hunter Hurst.
She is survived by her daughter, Jule McLauchlin Connolly and husband Henry, her son, Hugh Charles McLauchlin, Jr. and wife Susan, and grandchildren, Jennifer Connolly, Laura Connolly, Duncan McLauchlin, and Kristin McLauchlin. She is also survived by her brothers Samuel Thomas Hurst, III and John Hunter Hurst as well as a large extended family.
The family will receive friends after the service, Friday, March 22 at River Landing at Sandy Ridge.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, March 22, 2013 at River Landing at Sandy Ridge. Interment will be held prior to the service at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 22 in Raeford CemeteryC.

Nathaniel Brown, 71, of Raeford, died Thursday, March 7, 2013.
A graveside service was held Mar. 14 at 2 p.m. in Raeford Cemetery.

Martin Jacobs

Martin "Pet" Jacobs, 75, of Raeford, died Friday, March 8, 2013.
Survivors are: sisters, Patricia Chavis and Betty Locklear; son, Billy; daughters, Sarah and Debbie; and brother, Earl Locklear.
The funeral was held Sat. Mar. 16 at 1 p.m. in Locklear & Son Funeral Home chapel in Pembroke. Burial was in Jacobs family cemetery.

Lula Ray

Lula Ray, 58, of 641 Dunrobin Drive, died Thursday, March 7, 2013.
Survivors are: children, Darrick, Shemicka Monroe, Jessica, Kendra Simmons; siblings, James, Curtis, David and Annie Monroe, Brenda Farrington, Loretta Wright; nine grandchildren.
The funeral was held Tues. Mar. 11 at 2 p.m. in Cape Fear Conference B Headquarters. Burial was in Daniels Temple Church cemetery.

Marion McLaughlin

Marion McLaughlin, of 110 Campus Ave., died Thursday, March 14, 2013.
Survivors are: daughters, Melissa Maynor, LaKenya Shaw and Rashaunda Shaw; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Mar. 18 at12:30 p.m. in Buie Funeral Home chapel in Raeford.
Visitation will be today, Mar. 18 from noon to 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
