Louise Cloward

Louise Cloward, 87, of Raeford, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014.
Survivors are: brothers, Leroy and Frank; and sisters, Betty, Maxine and Lizzie.
The funeral will be held Friday, Dec. 5 at 11 a.m. in Freedom Chapel AME Zion Church. Burial in the church cemetery. 
Visitation will be held Thurs. Dec. 4 from 1 to 6 p.m. at Doby Funeral Home in Raeford.

Sarah D. Ham

Sarah D. Ham, 68, of 351 Birth St., died Monday, Nov. 24, 2014.
Survivors are: children, Felicia Shippy, Michelle McLean, Toni and Ernestine; sisters, Jackie McNair, Dorothy and Belinda Billinger; brothers, Billy, Bobby, and Paul Billinger.
The funeral was held Sunday, Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. in J.W. Turlington School. Burial was in Johnson family cemetery.

 



Mary H. Douglas

Mary H. "Mae" Douglas, 74, of 130 Meadows Lane, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2014.
Survivors are: husband, Roy Sr.; children, Phillis Sims, Pamela Love, Arthur Cureton, Roy Jr., John, Rakeem Dillard, Adrain Belton; mother, Helen Morman; five sisters; 23 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, Dec. 2 at  2 p.m. in Rockhill MB Church. Burial will be in Hoke County Community Cemetery. 
Visitation will be Dec. 1 from  2 to 6 p.m. Doby Funeral Home in Raeford.

Mildred Winburn

Mildred Wadkins Winburn of Raeford died Saturday, November 29 in FirstHealthMoore Regional Hospital at the age of 88.

 

She was born in Richmond County on June 26, 1926 to the late John and Edna D. Wadkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, William George WinburnSr and her son, William George Winburn, Jr. She was a loving and caring person, and member of the Raeford United Methodist Church.She retired from Burlington Industries after more than 40 years of service.

She is survived by her daughter, Georgia Carol Winburn of Aberdeen; her sisters, Doris Marsh and her husband, Ken of Statesville and Joy Johnson of Greenville, SC

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Ave, Raeford, NC.

The funeral will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at Raeford UMC, 308 N. Main Street, Raeford, NC with the Reverend Dr. Ray Harris and Reverend David Heath officiating. Burial will be in the Springhill Cemetery in Wagram.

James Rockholt

James Matthew Rockholt, 27, of Raeford, passed away Thursday, November 27, 2014 in Highsmith Rainey Hospital in Fayetteville.

 He was born in Moore County, NC on September 9, 1987 to George Rockholt and Beverly Taylor. He attended Hoke High School and enjoyed playing video games and listening to music. He loved his family, especially his special nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his mother, Beverly Taylor of the home; his father, George Rockholt and wife Linda of Raeford; brotherDavid Rockholt (Missy) of Laurinburg; step brother, Christian Craig of Raeford, Kevin Craig of Fayetteville and Justin Craig (Daisy) of Ft. Eustis, VA; step-sister, Leeanna Craig of Raeford; maternal grandparents, Jesse and Patsy Taylor of Raeford; a special niece, Brianna Rockholt of Laurinburg; special nephews, Davion and Josiah Rockholt, both of Laurinburg and a host of aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday, December 1, 2014 at Raeford Evangelical Methodist Church, 379 W. Palmer Street, Raeford, NC 28376.

The funeral  will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Raeford Evangelical Methodist Church with Pastor Roger Burns officiating.

Burial will follow in the Raeford City Cemetery.

Margaret Davis

Margaret Lytle Davis, age 90, passed away on November 27, 2014. She had lived most of her life in Raeford until 2011 when she moved to Kannapolis with her daughter and family. She graduated in 1942 from Hoke High School. After high school she lived in Detroit, Michigan where she worked for the Army Signal Corp during the war years. Returning home, she worked at the Hoke County Home Extension Agency, Hostetler and McNeill Attorneys at Law, Raeford Savings and Loan, Progressive Savings and Loan, and New Century Bank. She retired in 1989 at the age of 65, then went back and continued to work for 16 more years at New Century Bank. She received the Employee of the Month Award in October 2007 for "a shining example of neighbor helping neighbor" from New Century Bank. Due to health reasons, she had to retire again in November 2007. Her work ethic was unsurpassed. She married Chalmers B. Davis, of Raeford in 1946 and they had one daughter, Deborah.
While in Raeford, she enjoyed her friends and her church,ford Presbyterian Church. She volunteered for Hospice of Hoke County, which her sister Ruth L. Phillips helped found in Hoke County.
She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Davis Helms, as their "Aunt Margaret."
The family will receive visitors Sunday, November 30 from 2-3 p.m. at the John Ropp Hall at Raeford Presbyterian Church in Raeford, followed by by the funeral at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary, with burial following the service at the Raeford Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Raeford Presbyterian Church, 128 W. Edinborough Ave., Raeford, NC 28376.

Harold "Buzz" E. Stone

Harold "Buzz" E. Stone Jr. DDS, 73 of Jacksonville, Florida died Tuesday, November 18, 2014.
He spent several summers in Raeford. He was the son of Harold and Elizabeth Stone and grandson of M.B. and Annie McFadyen Warren. He remembered the good times at Robert and Mamie Gatlin's pond. He was raised in Falls Church, VA and attended UNC undergraduate and dental school, served in the Navy for a few years and then opened a dental office in Jacksonville, FL. He enjoyed all water sports and had a power boat, jet ski and sail boat over the years.
Survivors are: cousins, Chan Roberts, Mary Roberts Shapiro and pat Hood McNeill ; aunt Jennie Warren Hood and a host of friends.
A memorial/graveside service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers: memorials may be made to: Raeford Presbyterian Church Archie Ball Buie McFayden & Family Scholarship.

Barbara J McKinnon

Barbara J. McKinnon, 74, of 409 South Magnolia St., died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014.
Survivors are: daughters, Denise McLeod, Barbara Tyson, Jackie McLean and Deborah Blue; and sons, Gerald and Darryl.
The funeral will be held Friday. Nov. 21 at 1 p.m. Friday in Freedom Chapel AME Zion Church. Burial will be in Highland Biblical Gardens. 
Viewing will be held Thursday, Nov. 20 from  4 to 7 p.m. at Purcell Funeral Home in Laurinburg.

 



Shirley L McNatt

Shirley L. McNatt, 45, of 106 Dakota Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2014.
Survivors are: daughters, Iris and Jaquana; mother, Willie; father, James; sisters, Lisa Kelly , Francene Best, Erica and Sheerice; brother, James; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Thursday. Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. Thursday in McLaughlin Chapel AME Zion Church. Burial will be in Hoke County Community Cemetery. 
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Nov. 19 from 1 to 7p.m. at Doby Funeral Home in Raeford.

Dewey L. Suggs

Dewey Lee Suggs, 73, of Raeford, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014.
He was a Navy veteran.
Survivors are: sons, Donald and Michael; sisters, Ruth Owen, Margaret Melvin, Marilyn Heath, Joan Hulan, Carol Atkins; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, Nov. 19 at  2 p.m. in Butler Funeral Home chapel in Stedman. Burial will be in White Oak Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation, 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Shelby Strong

Shelby Strong, 73, of Raeford, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
She was born on Sept. 23, 1941, to the late Mr. Preston Evers and Mrs. Thelma Wilkins Evers.
Mrs. Strong was preceded in death by her sister, Clara Mae Owens and husband Odell Owens, and brother, Gary Evers.
Survivors are:  her husband, Michael Strong of Raeford; sister-in-law, Pauline Evers of Lumberton; uncle, Henry Wilkins and wife Dixie of Wilmington; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and two good friends, Sarah Beth Lytch of Fayetteville and Mary Morrow of Raeford.
During her 30 year career in education, she taught in many positions from elementary to the college level. After retirement, she volunteered her time with Southeastern North Carolina Radio Reading Service and with hospice care. She held a special place in her heart for Contact of Fayetteville and Fayetteville Urban Ministries.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, 2014. A memorial service conducted by Minister Sonny Kelly will follow at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Sullivan's Highland Funeral Service & Crematory. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2014, in New Hollywood Cemetery in Lumberton.

Carol L. McCoy

Carol Locklear McCoy, 49, of 516 6th Ave., died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2014.
Survivors are: sons, Jamel Gates, Lamarve and Darrell; sisters, Janie Dupree, Janice Daniels and Hattie Riggins; brothers, Carl, Jamie and Jimmy; and 10 grandchildren.
The funeral was held Saturday. Nov. 15 at  2 p.m. Saturday in Buie Funeral Home chapel in Raeford. Burial was in McLaughlin Chapel Church cemetery.

Phoebe Jordan

Phoebe Elizabeth Jackson Jordan of 824 Backwoods Lake Road, entered Heaven Saturday, November 15, 2014 at her residence at the age of 94.
She was born in Sampson County on July 16, 1920, to the late Wiley B. and Virginia Kyle Jackson. She was preceded in death by her husband, a WWII Veteran, Garth McCoy Jordan, and her granddaughter Elizabeth Carol Bunce Reynolds.
She was a member of Camp Ground United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Golden Elite within the Church. She was the past president of the American Business Women's Association (Scotch Plaid Chapter) and their Woman of the Year. She was also a member of the Traveling Lamplighters. At age 74 she became a licensed foster parent and cared for and loved 43 foster children. Among her hobbies were ballroom dancing, quilting, baking pound cakes for others and traveling with her daughter and son-in-law. Hergreatest talent was the ability to love others. She shared this gift with everyone. Her presence is gone, but her love remains.
She is survived by her daughter Carol Bunce (Jimmy) of Raeford; niece/surrogate daughter, Lynn Jane Elmwood of Waldorf Maryland; three grandchildren, James Franklin Bunce (Sherry K) Ricky Wayne Bunce, and Donald Andrew Bunce (Stephanie); five great-grandchildren, Amber Elise Davis(Brian), Kristine Anne Reynolds, Victoria Nicole Reynolds, Wade Everly Bunce, Carolyn Ashley Bunce; and a step-great-grandchild Jacob Mitchell Hasinger.
Visitation will be 1 until 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2104, prior to the service at Camp Ground UMC Church, 4625 Camp Ground Rd. Fayetteville, NC 28314.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m.
Interment will be at LaFayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street, Fayetteville.

George E. Gagnon

Retired Army Staff Sgt. George Edmond Gagnon Jr., 71, of 808 S. Buckeye Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014.
Survivors are: wife, Cristine; daughters, Irina and Alliah; brothers, Bruce and Paul; and sister, Deborah.
A graveside service will be held Friday, Nov. 14 at  10 a.m. in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake. Visitation will be from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Friday at the cemetery.

Marguerite N. Vivian

Marguerite Norris Vivian of Pinehurst, formerly of Raeford, died Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at Fox Hollow Senior Living at the age of 97.
She was born August 11, 1917 in Hoke County to the late Rembert Williamson and Bertha Burney Williamson. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Richard Alton Norris and William W. Vivian. She was a member of the Raeford United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women. She retired from the civil service with 35 years of service as an administrative officer of U.S. Army Communication Command Agency.
She is survived by her daughter Kitzy N. Bundy and her husband Franklin of Southern Pines; two grandchildren, Richard Jones of Winnabow, and Ashley Posey and her husband Mark of Raeford; and one great-granddaughter, Savannah P. Starling and her husband Dustin of Lumber Bridge.
Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Friday, November 14, 2014 at Raeford United Methodist Church.
The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Stephen Castle officiating. Interment will be in Highland Biblical Gardens.
