Janet Pate

Janet McCormick Pate of Raeford died Sunday, October 25, 2015 at Firsthealth Hospice House in Pinehurst at the age of 78.

She was born May 10, 1937 in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania to the late Harold and Gladys McCormick.

She is preceded in death by her husband Robert Graham Pate and a son William L Rinehart.

She is survived by two sons, Dwayne Rinehart and Marcus Pate; three grandchildren, Amanda R. Pierce, Alexander Rinehart, and Allison R. Landsdown.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, October 29, 2015 at Raeford Cemetery with Pastor Roger Burns officiating.

 

Brian J. Hartman

Brian John Hartman ,40,  passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2015 in Surf City.

He was born in Mann, West Virginia on February 15, 1975.

He found the mountains, hunting and fishing peaceful, loved bluegrass music and helping others. He worked as a heavy equipment operator most of his life. He loved his three children, wife, family and animals. He would always talk about how much he loved his babies and Daph. He was of the Pentecostal faith.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, the Rev. Clarence and Ethel Fortner who he loved dearly and Carlos W. Goodman Sr.' his grandfather-in-law; and Carlos W. Goodman Jr. (Buzzy), his father in law.

He is survived by his wife, Daphnie; son Brian Austin (16), Hayleigh (14) and Hanna (5); his parents, Carl and Barbara Mounts; mothers-in-law Cindy Goodman and Kristen Goodman(Buzzy); one brother, Nick Mounts; one niece Isabella Mounts; and aunts and uncles Sandra Grimmett, (Don), Jeannie Lee, Mildred Twardy (Ed), Mila Darnell (Danny), Tommy Fortner (Donna), Marty Fortner (Stephanne), Ann (Dave) Dick, and Lynn (Ricky) Johnson.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Sunday, October 25, 2015.

Norm Dubreuil

Norm Dubreuil, died Saturday, October 17, 2015.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 24 at 11 a.m. in St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church in Raeford.

Melvin Chambers

Melvin Clayton Chambers, of Raeford, died Sunday, October 18, 2015 at his home at the age of 79.

He was born in Rockingham County, North Carolina December 8, 1935, to the late Robert Lester Chambers and Minnie Bet Smith. He served in the US Army.

He is survived by his wife Patricia H. Chambers, two sons, Melvin C. Chambers II , Andrew Chambers all of Raeford and his daughter Michele Musselwhite of UAE.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

 

 

Richard L. Burkhart

Richard Lewis Burkhart, 99, of Raeford, died Friday October 16, 2015.
He was born June 24, 1916 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late George Noble Burkhart and Lucy Elanor Noble. He graduated from Purdue University and the University of Michigan and was a Forestry Manager. A WWII Veteran, he retired from the US Army as a Colonel.
Survivors are: his wife of 73 years, Lucille McNeill Burkhart; daughters, Marsha Lucas and her husband Bob and Elizabeth Godwin and her husband Michael; 5 grandchildren and 7

great grandchildren.
The funeral  will be held Monday, October 19 at 11:00 a.m. at Raeford Presbyterian Church  with a visitation scheduled one hour prior, at 10:00 a.m. in Ropp Hall. Burial will follow in the City of Raeford Cemetery.

Dollie M. Virgil

Dollie M. Virgil, 86, of Raeford, died Monday, Oct. 12.
Survivors are : children, Robert Virgil, Stanley Virgil, Geraldine Gay, Linda Joyce Virgil, all of Raeford, Qwenzella Wynn of Laurinburg and Georgette Darnell of Raleigh; sister, Clara Spruill of New York; eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a host of great great grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Saturday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. in J.W. Turlington School. Burial will be in Highland Biblical Gardens.

Julia P. Sydnor

Julia P. Sydnor, 65, died Thursday, October 8, 2015 in her home.
She is the daughter of the late Zinious B. Haynes and Emma D. Haynes-Prestwood, She was born April 22, 1950 in Cumberland Co. North Carolina. She was united in holy matrimony to her late husband Mr. Daniel Douglas Gray, Sr. of Washington, DC.
She loved to play cards, take care of others ,and to interact with all her family and friends. The best thing about her was, she was the most helpful and honest person in the world.
Survivors are: three sons, Erwin Jules Sydnor, Zinious Lamont Sydnor, Daniel Gray, Jr.; two daughters, Krystle Sydnor and Angel Sydnor, all of Fayetteville; five sisters, Ella Mae McMillian, Wilhemenia McNair of North Carolina, Hattie Ruth McNair, Ozella Medley both of Maryland, Sarah Doris Daniel of Louisiana; two brothers John E. Haynes of Maryland and Phillip Haynes of North Carolina; eight grandchildren; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends, Mary of Sanford, NC; Josie Stephens of Hope Mills, NC; Cheryl Vasquez of Fayetteville, NC and Melanie and Martin Jenkins of North Carolina.
A public viewing will be held Friday, October 16 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at LaFayette Funeral Home 6651 Raeford Road, Fayetteville.

Charlie W. Cooper

Charlie Wade Cooper, 76, of Raeford, NC died Sunday, October 11, 2015 at his home.
He was born in Cumberland County a son of the late, David and Ella Bunce Cooper. He had worked as a surveyor for the Public Works Commission. Charlie enjoyed music and playing in "The Charlie Cooper Band", going to auctions, and NASCAR racing.
Survivors are: sons: Billy Joe Cooper and Timmy John Cooper; daughters: Catherine Gomand and Pam Hood; brothers: John Cooper, David Cooper, Jr., Thomas Cooper, Jerry Michael Cooper; his sisters: Elaine Morgan, Mary Ann Bedwell, Victoria Woo, Dorothy Chilton; and 9 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Saint Pauls Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Philip Martin Woods officiating.

Samuel Hunt

Samuel Hunt, 44, of Red Springs died Sunday, October 11, 2015 in his home.
He is preceded in death by his father, James Albert Hunt.
Survivors are: son, Samuel Hunt; daughters, Samantha Hunt, Savannah Hunt,
and Santana Hunt; mother, Maggie Hunt; sisters, Bobbie Hunt-Jacobs and Jacqueline Chavis; and one grandchild.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, October 14 at 2:30 p.m. in South Hoke Baptist Church with the Rev. David Hunt officiating. Burial will be church cemetery. 

Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 13 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home in Red Springs.

 

 

Samuel Prevatte

Samuel Paul (Sandy) Prevatte, age 57 of Rockfish, died Friday, October 9, 2015 at his home.

 He was born in Lumberton on March 18, 1958. He was preceded in death by his father, David Prevatte and his brother, Wayne Prevatte. He was a member and served on the board with the Rockfish Volunteer Fire Department. He retired from the N.C. Forestry Service as a Hoke County Forest Ranger.

Survivors are his wife, Linda Shepley Prevatte of Rockfish; two daughters, Amanda Prevatte of Rockfish, and Crystal Thrailkill and her husband Jason of Rockfish; two grandchildren, Kaitlynn Thrailkill and Jacob Thrailkill of Rockfish; his mother Molly Crenshaw Prevatte of St. Pauls; and two brothers, Christopher Prevatte of Lumberton and Ronald Prevatte and his wife Samantha of Siler City.

Visitation will be held from 7:00 until 9:00 pm on Monday, October 12, 2015 at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Ave. Raeford. 

The Funeral will be held 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at Parkton Church of God, 22780 US 301, North Parkton, with Pastor Billy Blackmon officiating. Burial will be in the Parkton Cemetery.

Mary Gillis

Mary Stewart Johnson Gillis, (Mrs. John McNatt Gillis) died Monday, October 5, 2015.

Her husband affectionately known as Mr. Mack died in 2003. She was a daughter of James Archie and Mary Gaston Atkins Johnson of Wake County. She volunteered with the Red Cross, was a member of the 71^st PTA, a member of the Galatia Home Demonstration Club, later Extension Homemakers, and served at the state level. She was a member of the JEB Stuart Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy and served as district director, a member of the Woman's Club of Fayetteville, having served as President and working tirelessly to promote Heritage Square. She joined Galatia Presbyterian Church as a bride having visited for years before she married. She taught in the Sunday school and acted as director of Vacation Bible School for many years. She served as president of the Women of the Church and as Presbyterical president. She received two Women of the Church Honorary Life membership awards, one from the local church and one from the Presbytery. 

She was preceded in death by her brothers, James Johnson of Virginia Beach, John (Jack) Johnson of Fairmont, Neil Johnson, Tapley Johnson and William Johnson, all of Wake County, and sisters, Georgie J. Leggett, Alline J. Wiggins, Pollyanna J. Paris and Lillian Johnson, all of Wake County.

She is survived by her children, John McNatt Gillis, Jr. (Ruth Folger Gillis) of Fayetteville, James David Gillis of Fayetteville, Joseph Harmon Gillis (Betty Hyde Gillis) of Fayetteville, and Mary Jane Stewart Gillis Turner (Roy Turner) of Fayetteville; 10 grandchildren: John III, Andrew and Margaret Gillis, Jamie and Jeffrey Gillis, Amy G. Johnson, Marjorie G. Turner and Joseph Gillis, Mary Stewart T. Mudryk, Daniel Turner; 11 great grandchildren; and brothers Samuel Johnson and Benjamin Johnson, both of Raleigh.

Visitation will be held Saturday, October 10, 2015 from noon until 1:45 p.m. in the church fellowship hall.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Galatia Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Archie Barringer officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Miss Meagan Sophia Hartsfield of Raeford died Friday, October 2, 2015 in Womack Army Medical Center.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Alvin and Sally Hartsfield, Sue Rapavi; her great grandfather, Mike Rapavi.
Survivors are:  her parents, Kenneth Wayne Hartsfield, Sr. and April Suzanne Hartsfield, both of Raeford; her brothers, Kenneth Anthony Hartsfield (Emma) of Hill AFB, UT, Kevin Alvin Hartsfield of Whiteman AFB in MO; her sisters, Mackenzie Sue Hartsfield, Madison Salena Hartsfield, Melaney Savannah Hartsfield all of Raeford; her great grandmother, Mary Rapavi of Adena, OH; her nephew, Kenneth Elijah Hartsfield; her niece, Penelope Ivy Hartsfield; Many uncles and aunts in Ohio, New Mexico, & Texas.
The funeral  will be held Thursday, October 8 at 4:00 p.m. at the JFK Chapel on Ft. Bragg.

 

Clyde Thomas Sr.

Clyde Thomas, Sr., 95, of Raeford died Friday, October 2, 2015 in Veteran Affairs Hospital in Fayetteville.
Survivors are: sons, Clyde Thomas, Jr. and Allen Thomas; daughters, Angela Riggins and Angie Larimore; 25 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and 4 great great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Saturday, October 10 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Doby Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Riggins at 9557 Mt. Horne Drive, Fayetteville.

Doris E. Hall

Doris Ellen Bounds Hall, 89, passed away Monday, October 5, 2015 in Autumn Care of Raeford.
She was born in Hoke County on April 4, 1926 to the late Wilson J. Bounds and Mattie Johnson Bounds. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Red Springs and the Red Hat Society. She was preceded in death by her husband James Marion Hall and a son, Medford Hall.
Survivors are: her sons, Donald Hall and wife Carolyn of Red Springs, Leon Hall and wife Hannah of Oak Island and Gene Hall and wife Beverly of Angier; a daughter, Wanda McDiarmid and husband John of Raeford; a brother, Howard Bounds and wife Emily of Marion and a sister, Marie Metzler of California; 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held 7-9 pm Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at Crumpler Funeral Home 220 East 4th Ave. Red Springs, NC 28377.

Frances G. Dinkins

Frances Gillis Dinkins died Saturday, October 3, 2015 in FirstHealth Hospital-Hoke Campus at the age of 90.

She was born in Fayetteville on September 20, 1925 to the late William and Carrie Belle Bethea Gillis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederic "Fred" R. Dinkins; her sons, Williams Frederick "Rick" Dinkins, and John Gillis Dinkins; and her brother, Eugene "Gene" Gilli. She was a member of Galatia Presbyterian Church. She was a graduate of Montreat Anderson Junior College and Flora Macdonald College in Red Springs. She received her master's degree from Union Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. She taught at Thornville Orphanage in Clinton, South Carolina. After marrying her husband, Fred, they moved to Brazil where they served as missionaries for more than 35 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ruth Dinkins of Fayetteville; her brothers, Bill Gillis and his wife Grace of Fayetteville, and Johnny Gillis and his wife, Barbara of Fayetteville; her daughter-in-law, Mary Adams Dinkins of Mebane; two step-granddaughters, Wendy Ray and Candida Nance; and five step-great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 in the parlor at Galatia Presbyterian Church.

The funeral will begin in the sanctuary of the church at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Sanders Read and Evangelist Trinidad Martinez Solis officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
