Bertha M. Morrison

Bertha M. Morrison, 70, of 714 S. Parker Church Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012.
Survivors are: daughter, Christine Allen; sons, Jerry, James and Timothy; siblings, Ann, Daisy, Hattie, Gennia, Sheila, Jamie, David, Larry and Frankie; six grandchildren.
The funeral was held Friday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. in Mount Pisgah Baptist Church. Burial was in church cemetery.

Wendell Schipper

Retired U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Wendell E. Schipper, 82, of Raeford, passed away in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, on Monday, Feb. 13, 2012.
Mr. Schipper was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patty A. Schipper; and two grandsons, David Schipper and Paul Schipper.
Survivors are: sons, Carl Schipper and Earle Schipper; daughter, Marceal Johnson; stepdaughter; Lynnette Fingland; grandchildren, Eddie Schipper, Chris Schipper, Mandy Schipper, Jenny Conner, Jimmy Denny, Michael Johnson, Karissa Gallagher, Sierra Gallagher, Sara Cortez Schipper; 15 great-grandchildren; and sister, Karen Brewer.
The Funeral was held on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Adcock Funeral Home & Crematory in Spring Lake, followed by the burial in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake at noon with military honors.

Nancy C. Conoly

Nancy Cole Conoly, 81, passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, February 14, 2012.
She was born in Wagram to Burnice B. Cole and Pearl S. Cole. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Rebecca Conoly Jones. She was a member of Raeford United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her loving husband J.R. (Jimmy) Conoly of Raeford; her oldest daughter, Debora C. Adams and husband Harley Adams Jr.; her youngest daughter, Nancy L. (Cindy) Conoly; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Ave, Raeford, NC 28376.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 16, 2012 at the Raeford United Methodist Church with the Rev. Adolph Smith officiating.
Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery following the service.

Lewis E. Jones Sr.

Lewis Edward "Ed" Jones, Sr. of Raeford died Saturday, February 11, 2012 in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center at the age of 79.
He was born in Orangeburg County, South Carolina on May 10, 1932 to the late Frank Jones and Carrie Sue Austin Jones. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia E. Jones. He retired from the US Army as Command Sgt. Major in 1976. He was the owner and operator of Star Gun Kennels and Shooting Preserves. He was a member of Pittman Grove Baptist Church where he served as a former deacon.
Survivors include his wife, Mary E. Jones of Raeford; two sons, Lewis E. "Eddie" Jones, Jr. and wife Jeanne of Raeford, and Daniel E. "Danny" Jones of Raeford; three grandchildren, Medina Phillips, Ashley Valley, and Joseph E. Jones; two great-grandchildren, Chance Jones, and Jakobie Jones; and a sister, Catheryn J. Green of Crystal River, FL.
A memorial service will be 2p.m. Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Pittman Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Williams officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

David L. Atkinson

David Lindsey Atkinson, 47, of Wilmington passed away Sunday February 12, 2012 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He was born November 24, 1964 to the late Dorothy Jones Hayes. He is preceded in death by his brothers William, Bert (Charlie), and Howard Hayes all formerly of Raeford.
He was a unique person, born hearing impaired, and learned to communicate by sign language and graduated from Morganton School for the Deaf in Morganton. He was an employee at K & W Cafeteria for the past 18 years, and was loved by all who knew him.
He is survived by his father James Atkinson (Gudrun) of Spring Hill, Florida; a sister Shirley H. Honeycutt (Lloyd); a brother James Hayes (Tami); aunt Louise (Ken); uncle R.B. Jones; and many nieces and nephews. He especially adored his great niece and nephew Katelyn and Michael Gieschen.
The funeral will be conducted on Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 6 p.m. at the Seaside Chapel, with visitation to follow.
Burial will be Friday, February 17, 2012 at noon at Raeford Cemetery.

Margaret Newton

Margaret Elizabeth Wood Newton, 92, of Fayetteville, passed away on Sunday February 12, 2012. She was born April 11, 1919 in Hoke County to the late Thaddeus Graham Wood and Flora Margaret Monroe Wood. She is preceded in death by her husband Edwin David Newton, Sr and a son, Edwin David Newton, Jr; a brother, James G. Wood and sisters Lela W. McInnis and Hazel W. Smith. She was a lifelong member of Galatia Presbyterian Church and a recipient of the Presbyterian Women's Honorary Life Membership. She was a homemaker, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
The family will receive friends Tuesday February 14, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. in Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home, and the funeral will be conducted Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 11 a.m. in Galatia Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Shuford White and the Rev. Beth Faulk officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Ben Haddon

Ben T. Haddon, Jr. of Sunset Harbor, formerly of Raeford, passed away Thursday, February 9, 2012 surrounded by his wife and stepchildren. He was born September 4, 1930 in Hamilton County, Tennessee to the late Ben Terrill Haddon, Sr. and Myrtle Rogers Haddon. He is preceded in death by his sisters, Georgiana Denmon and Margaret Huie. He was a member of Camp United Methodist Church in Shallotte. He was a Korean Veteran, a former member of the Raeford Kiwanis Club and the South Brunswick Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the Raeford Masonic Lodge and the Sudan Shrine Temple. During this time he was instrumental in obtaining admission for six children to various Shrine Hospitals. He was a former president of the Brunswick County Fishing Club. Survivors include his wife, Jackie Haddon of Sunset Harbor; a stepson, Mike Prevatte of Sunset Harbor; a stepdaughter, Gloria Moore and husband Robin of Moore County; a sister, Dorothy Karwisch of Waynesville; a step-granddaughter, Sharon Freeman of Augusta, Georgia; and numerous nieces and nephews and a bevy of friends. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. at Camp United Methodist Church in Shallotte. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. Dwight Allen Ross, 50, of 169 Angel Drive, died Friday, Feb. 3, 2012.
Survivors are: mother, Marie Jones; stepfather, Raymond Jones; siblings, Vincent, Donald, Charles McQueen, Ronald, Herbert, Timothy, Sharon, Caroline Scott, Melissa.

Viola Davis, 82, of 1110 Loop Road, died Sunday, February 5, 2012.

Glennie B. McLauchlin

Glennie B. McLauchlin, 82, of Raeford, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2012.
Survivors are: children, Earline Campbell, Dorothy Meekins, Barbara Scriven, Elwin and Melvin; siblings, Remonia Luster, Thelma Williams, Janice Waddell, and Bessie, Mary, Robert and Lenzo McNeill; 17 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Mary Ann Boone of 415 Midway Drive died Saturday, February 4, 2012 in her home at the age of 91.
She was born in Hoke County on July 4, 1920 to the late Daniel and Lizar Butler Roberts. She is preceded in death by her husband, William A. Boone.

Nellie Evans

Nellie T. Evans, 86 of St. Robert, Missouri, died Saturday, January 21, 2012 in Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla, Missouri.
Survivors are: children, Joyce Gray of Oak Grove, Kentucky, John Evans of St. Robert, Sarah Evans Miller of Thomasville, Georgia, and Sonja Williams of Columbia, Missouri; sisters, Minnie Harrell of Raeford, and Betty Sherfey, of Pomona, California; daughter-in-law, Mary Brake of Bloomington, Illinois; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral was held Wednesday, January 25 at 10:30 a.m. in Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Estates Cemetery.

Tina S Blackston

Tina Shamberger Blackston, 53, of Raeford, died Friday, Jan 27, 2012.
Survivors are her husband, Michael; children, Shashanah Cole, Baruch Shamberger, Isaiah; a stepson, Michael; her mother, Geraldine Shamberger; siblings, Robert, Lawrence and Zipporah Shamberger, Kim Perry; and six grandchildren.

Astor Terry

Retired Sergeant Major Astor Terry of Fayetteville passed away January 28, 2012 in Cape Fear Valley Hospital at the age of 71.
He retired from the Army in 1989. He then started All The Way Driving School in Raeford, teaching Drivers Education. He was born in Vest, Kentucky to the late Johnie and Lonzo Sparkman Terry. Preceding him in death are his brothers Olie Terry, Howard Terry, and his sister Edna Terry.
He touched many lives and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife Virginia L. Terry of the home; two daughters, Paula Jencks and her husband Guy of Hope Mills, and Vickie Hinton and her husband Rex of Virginia; two granddaughters, Barbara Hinton of Virginia and Kimberly Jencks of Hope Mills; and siblings Olive, Estie, Zella, Tom, Tramel, Elizabeth and Martha Jo.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at New Life Baptist Church, 6501 Camden Road, Fayetteville, NC 28306.
The service will be at 8 p.m. following the visitation at the church with the Reverend Ed Wilson officiating.
Burial with full military honors will be at noon Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.

Viola Maxwell

Viola Maxwell, 91, formerly of Raeford, passed away January 28, 2012 at The Newport in Newport News, Virginia.
She was born December 1, 1920 in Hoke County, the daughter of Martin Luther and Fannie (Little) Maxwell. Her parents and her nine siblings: Albert, Lee, Homer, Leatha, Bill, Boger, Hughes, Norman, and Martin Luther Jr. Maxwell preceded her in death. She received her education at King's Business College, Raleigh, and the University of Maryland, College Park where she received a BA degree. She also attended George Washington University Law School. During World War II she served in the WAVES and later was employed by the US Government in various locations. She obtained her real estate license and sold real estate in the Washington, D.C. area for many years and also owned VIP Antiques in Georgetown.
She is survived by her son, George C. Pagos and his wife Terry of Seattle, Washington, sister-in-law Jewel Maxwell of Concord, and several nephews and a niece, James Maxwell of Newport News, Boger E. Maxwell Jr., Bennie Henderson and the Rev. Earl Henderson, all of North Carolina; Floyd Maxwell and Charles Maxwell of Mississippi; and Marilyn M. Lelli of Ohio.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, February 1st at Peninsula Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. in Raeford Cemetery, with Crumpler Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
