David Shepard

 David Shepard of Raeford died Friday, March 14, 2014 at the age of 64.
He was born in Richmond County on March 18, 1949 to Jasper Shepard and Glennie Williams Hoffman. He retired from Unilever after 27 years of service.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Patricia Shepard of Raeford; his son, Mark Shepard (Wendy) of Fayetteville; his daughters, Yvonne S. Hatcher (Michael) of Shallotte, and Naomi Shepard (Matt) of Raeford; his sister Jean Garrison (Benford) of Rockingham; 5 grandchildren, Drew, Christopher,Leianna, Katherine, and Breanna; and 1 expected grandchild, Hayden
Visitation will be 4-5 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2014 at Crumpler Funeral Home Chapel.
The funeral  will begin at 5 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2014 at Crumpler Funeral Home Chapel with Gerald Oldham officiating.

Odessa Purcell-McPhaul

Odessa Purcell-McPhaul, 78, of 3780 Blue Springs Road, died Friday, March 7, 2014.
Survivors are: children, George Purcell I, Velma Johnson, Olas, Welton McPhaul and Delores Collins; 22 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Saturday, March 15 at 1 p.m. in Center Grove MBC. Burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held today, Friday, March 14 from 1 to 8 p.m. at Buie Funeral Home in Raeford.

Gertrude M. Daniels

Gertrude McKenzie Daniels, 91, of Raeford, died Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at Open Arms Retirement Center of Raeford.
She was born in Hoke County on May 30, 1922, to the late Hugh A. McKenzie and Louella Graham McKenzie. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Harry S. Daniels Sr. and David D. Averett and her sons, Harry S. Daniels Jr. and William F. Daniels. She was a member of Antioch Presbyterian Church and a honorary lifetime member of the women of the church.
She is survived by her daughter Judy Daniels Strother and her husband Leland of Raeford; four grandchildren, Ashley Daniels Payne (Josh), Amy Strother Harvey (Larry), Graham Strother (Ashley), Kyle Daniels (Heather); and five great-grandchildren, Tyler Payne, Brodie Payne, Laurie Beth Harvey, Lillie Harvey, Kylon Daniels.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Antioch Presbyterian Church with the Rev Dr. David Hudson officiating. Inurnment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be after the service.

James Peterkin

James Peterkin Sr, 91, died Sunday, March 9, 2014.
Survivors are: wife, Glenda Peterkin; children, James Peterkin Jr., Perry Peterkin, Terry Peterkinn, Billy Peterkin, Hubert Peterkin, Lonnine Peterkin, Glenn King, Gene Moore, Eola Newkirk, Hazel Ware, Shirley Perry, Iris Peterkin, Glentoria Foster, Gwen Davis; 63 granchildren; 75 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Sunday, March 16 at 3 p.m. in Cape Fear Conference B Headquarters with the Rev. Bruce Hurst officating. Burial will be in Leach Springs Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
Public viewing will be held Saturday, March 15 from 1- 5 p.m. in Buie Funeral Home and 6-8 p.m. at Leach Springs Missionary Baptist Church.

Betty M. Hendrix

Betty McKellar Hendrix passed away on March 8, 2014, at Autumn Care in Raeford, after a valiant struggle to recover from a critical fall at her home on December 18, 2013 in which she broke her neck.
She was born on June 24, 1930 in Robeson County, NC. She graduated from Wagram High School and soon thereafter moved to Raeford as the bride of Samuel L. Hendrix. Wed at the manse of Centre Presbyterian Church near Maxton, NC, on February 12, 1949, Sam and Betty were married for 45 years. Betty was a member of Raeford United Methodist Church for 65 years, dedicating many years to her circle and to teaching children in Sunday school and Bible school. She was retired from the Hoke County Schools. A devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother, and a faithful friend, Betty will be remembered for her beautiful smile, optimistic disposition and her kindness and generosity to all.
Survivors are: four children, Sue Hendrix Roberts and husband, Terry of Lenoir, NC; Linda Hendrix Metcalf of Greensboro, NC; Marie Hendrix Meyer and husband, Tim of Greensboro, NC and Samuel Hendrix, Jr and wife, Susan of Raeford, NC, and six grandchildren, Chris Meyer, Greg Meyer, Brian Meyer, Kevin Metcalf, Samantha Hendrix and George Hendrix. Survivors also include her brother, Julian "Buck" McKellar, Jr of Raleigh, NC and sister, Ann Coggin, of Greensboro, NC, and numerous nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her husband and her parents, Julian McKellar and Sarah Walker McKellar.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, March 14, at Raeford United Methodist Church with burial to follow at Raeford Cemetery. Visitation will be a Crumpler Funeral Home Thursday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Helen M. Faircloth

Helen M. Faircloth, 75, of Raeford, died Sunday, March 9, 2014.
Survivors are: brother, Charles Jr.; and sister, Maggie Angle.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, March 11 at 2 p.m. in LaFayette Funeral Home chapel in Fayetteville. Burial will be in Cumberland Memorial Gardens in Fayetteville.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 11 from noon to 2 p.m. in the funeral home.

Deon D. Bratcher, 37, 403 Steven St., died Wednesday, March 5, 2014.
Survivors are: mother, Lindora; father, Vernon Purcell; and siblings, Latisha, Laniesha, Trena, Venetta, Ashley, Latavis, Larry, Lamontae and Charles.
The funeral was held Sunday, March 9 at 2 p.m. in Piney Grove MBC. Burial was in Highland Biblical Gardens.

Diane H. Winston

Diane Haywood Winston, 46, of 3593 Balfour Road, Shannon, died Wednesday, March 5, 2013 in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.
Survivors are: husband, Daniel Preston Winston; sons, Nakeem Jarel Winston, Jamar T. Winston, and Preston Darrell Winston; daughters, Rachel Denise Hailey, and Tracy Anne Hailey; mother, Georgia Haywood; brothers, Ricky Haywood and James Haywood; sisters, Carolyn Ruffin, Yvonne Haywood, and Sarah McGeechy; and 5 grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Sunday, March 9 at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph Miracle Revival Center in Red Springs. Burial will be in church cemetery.
Public viewing will be held Saturday, March 8 from 2 – 6 p.m. in Crumpler Funeral Home in Red Springs and visitation will be from 6 – 8 p.m.

Rudolph "Rudy" Hendrix

Rudolph "Rudy" Hendrix of Raeford died Thursday, March 6, 2014 in his home at the age of 62.
He was born in Scotland County on June 4, 1951. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lillian Sebald Hendrix and his brother, Randy Williamson. A graduate of Hoke High School, Rudy served in the U.S. Air Force and later graduated from the Northern Virginia Police Academy. He began working with the Prince William County Police Department and retired as a criminal investigator. Upon his retirement he moved back home to Raeford in 2005 and joined the Patriot Guard Riders and the Blue Knights where he served as Road Captain.
He is survived by his son, Jonathan E. Dunn of Manassas, Virginia; his father Robert "Bob" C. Hendrix of Raeford; his mother, Mildred C. Williamson of Fayetteville; his sisters, Lena M. Scott and her husband (Frank) of Fayetteville, Linda Long of Lakewood, Colorado, and Diane Autry (Jimmy) of Fayetteville; his brothers, Donald and Ronald Williamson of Fayetteville, Paul Williamson (Denise) of St. Pauls, and Fred Williamson (Sharon) of Hope Mills; and many beloved uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Ave, Raeford, and other times at the home of Bob Hendrix, 206 W. 5th Ave, Raeford.
The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 9 at Raeford Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Michael McGehee and Chaplin Bill McCoy officiating. Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

Ruth B. Ratley

Ruth Butler Ratley, 84, of Raeford, formerly of Fayetteville, died Wednesday, March 5, 2014.
Survivors are: sons, Dan, Steve, Ronnie and Phillip; sister, Sarah Kunst; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Saturday, March 8 at 2 p.m. in Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home chapel in Fayetteville. Burial will be in Cross Creek Cemetery in Fayetteville.
Visitation will be held an hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

John D. Black

John David Black, 72, of 216 Scotland Ave., died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014.
Survivors are: children, Karen Becton, John and Byron; sisters, Sallie Newkirk, Ti-Yetta Gomez, Devetta Banister, Glendia Black-Flippin and Dorothy; brothers, Prince and Owen; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Friday, March 7 at 2 p.m. in Leach Springs MBC. Burial will be in Hoke Community Cemetery.

Theresa K. Learned, 53, of 159 Myra Road, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2014.

Rita S. Strub

Rita Scarbourgh Strub, 79, passed away Saturday, February 22, 2014 in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
She was born in Calhoun, Mississippi on April 4, 1934 to the late Robert L. and Lucy Elvy Scarbourgh. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her sons, Danny Clubbs, Mark Jadwin, Richard Strub, Michael Strub; a brother, James Scarbrough; grandchildren Rita Strub, Austin Brandt, Shannon Strub, Shelby Strub, Alexa Welch, Sydney Strub, Michelle Clubbs Cornman, Stacey Beriberich, Jake Jadwin, Rich Jadwin, Jarid Jadwin; great-grandchildren Brandon Clubbs, Chestor Cornman, Gabriel Berberich, Brianna Carter, Lynzee Carter Cameron Carter, and Arianna Jadwin, significant siblings to Michael Strub, Angie Corrado, April Norton, Callie Strub.
All services will be private.

Clarence Thompson

Retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Clarence Thompson, 70, of 999 Posey Farm Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014.
Survivors are: wife, Christine; children, Lisa and Clarence; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held Saturday, February 22 at 11 a.m. in the Miracle Temple Church. Burial will be held Monday, February 24 at 10 a.m. in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.
