Beverly H. Teal

Beverly H. Teal, 85, wife of Franklin R. Teal, and daughter of Dave and Claudine Hodgin, died Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at Autumn Care of Raeford.

She is survived by her son Jimmy and wife Rebecca of Fayetteville, her brother David and wife Linda of Raeford, sisters Janet and Claudine Hodgin of Raeford and San Francisco, respectively, and several nephews and nieces.

She graduated from Hoke High School in 1949 and was a lifelong resident of Raeford. She married Frank Teal on March 2, 1955 and they were married for 59 years until Frank's death in 2014.

Beverly was a devoted wife and mother whose life centered on others rather than self. She was a tough fighter who battled Alzheimer's disease the last 10 years of her life. An example of this toughness was when she was placed on Hospice care after a difficult bout with pneumonia in July, 2014. After a 6-month stay on Hospice her condition improved, therefore she no longer qualified for Hospice care. However, the years, the illnesses, and the effects of Alzheimer's brought an end to her journey. 

Visitation will be 10:30-11:30 a.m. Friday, September 25, 2015 at John C. Ropp Fellowship Hall, Raeford Presbyterian Church.

The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday September 25, 2105 at Raeford Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Raeford Presbyterian Church Building Fund,128 West Edinborough Ave. Raeford, NC 28376.

Frances Carver

Frances Jean Freeman Carver, widow of James L. Carver, passed away Monday, Sept. 21.  She was 97. 

She was born on Magnolia Street in Raeford, the youngest of four sisters, to Walter E. Freeman and Agnes Gatlin Freeman.  The family moved to Fayetteville when she was very young, then to Aberdeen where she attended high school.  Following graduation, she enrolled in Meredith College, serving as a Baptist missionary student in the North Carolina mountains the summers following her sophomore and junior years.  She graduated with a degree in English and taught for a year in the Hoke County school system at what is now the J.W. Turlington School. 

The following year she moved to Durham to work for American Tobacco Company, where she met and married her husband, Jim, in 1945.  Prior to and following the war, Jim worked for Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company.  Shortly after their marriage, he was assigned to Greece to buy oriental tobacco for Liggett, taking Jean with him as they embarked on an adventure into that war-torn country.  After about a year there, Jim was transferred to the Black Sea coast of Turkey; the challenges of living in continued primitive conditions in a different strange culture were met and overcome by the strong bond of love and friendship between Jean and her husband. 

In 1950 Jim was transferred to Izmir, Turkey's third largest city, and more cosmopolitan than his first two assignments.  The US military had a base in Izmir and Jean's two children were permitted to attend the military's dependent school.  Jim died in an automobile accident in 1966 and was buried in a Christian cemetery in Izmir; Jean returned to North Carolina with Jimmy and Jeanine.  Jean wrote about her experiences overseas in The Long Honeymoon, a book treasured by her family and friends.

In 1991 she relocated from Chapel Hill to Southern Pines.  She enjoyed golfing, bridge and other social activities with friends and two sisters, and was active in Brownson Presbyterian Church and a writing group.  Her graciousness, warmth, and sense of humor made her "Mama Jean" not only to her grandchildren but also to her children's and grandchildren's friends.

She is survived by her son, James L. Carver, Jr.; her daughter, Jeanine Carver Wheless; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and many friends.

Her funeral and celebration of life will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, with visitation at 2 p.m. in the Gatlin Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church in Raeford.  She will be interred in the Raeford cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or First Health Hospice.

Minister Charles D. Sconiers

Minister Charles Don Sconiers, 52, of Raeford, NC, died Friday, Sept 18, 2015, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Fayetteville, NC.
He was a member at St. Mary's Pentecostal Holiness Church and was employed at Unilever in Raeford.
Survivors are: wife, Eldress Angela Charlene Sconiers; daughters, Martina Nichol (Patrick), Martera, Demetria, Tammy, and Brittney; two grandchildren; and other relatives.
The funeral will be held Thursday, Sept 24, 2015, 2:00 PM, St. Mary's Pentecostal Holiness Church, Red Springs, NC. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Neil A. Southerland

Neill Andrew Southerland, 63, of Raeford, died September 18, 2015.

Carl S. Alley

Carl Samuel Alley, 73, of Raeford, died Thursday, Sept.10, 2015.

Virginia C. Casey

Virginia Christian Casey of Raeford died Monday, September 14, 2015 at her daughter's home at the age of 86.

She was born in Amherst, Virginia on June 30, 1929 to the late Robert A. Christian and Pearl Scharr Christian. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles O. Casey, her granddaughter, Paula Maddox, two brothers and two sisters. She was a member of the Memorial Christian Church in Lynchburg, Virginia.

She is survived by her daughter, Diane C. Wilson of Raeford; her son, Charles M. Casey of Lynchburg; her sister, Thelma Ann Gilbert of Richmond, Virginia; 4 grandchildren, Kevin Maddox, Jerry Wilson and his wife, Lori, Chris Casey, Robyn Branch and her husband, and Jason; 5 step-grandchildren, Lisa, Stephanie, Tony, Mark, and Perry; and 6 great-grandchildren, Morgan, Diana, Zoe, Victor, Josh, and Tim.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mark Gillis

David Mark Gillis, recently retired Southern States fertilizer plant manager in Lumberton, died in Wake Forest Baptist Hospital with an infection from a rare mosquito-borne virus, eastern equine encephalitis. He was 61.

A graduate of N.C. State with an A.A. in agriculture, he was a lifelong member of Antioch Presbyterian Church where he served as clerk of Session, sang in the choir, and participated in all activities related to care of its people, property and outreach. His community activism included Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, Raeford Turkey Festival and any cause addressing the needs of others. He lived without attachment to things and with loving compassion for people, animals and nature, especially his flowers. His generosity had no limit for family, friends, strangers, and stray animals. He invested in people, giving of himself in the tradition of St. Francis of Assisi – walking the path Jesus walked. 

He is survived by his fiancé and loving partner of 27 years, Sheila Salinas; her children, David Salinas, and Donna and Steve Everett; beloved granddaughters Jordan and Christina Everett; and his much loved pets, Rusty and Harley. He is also survived by sisters Vicky Sawyer (Jerry), and Rita Gillis (Jeff Pierce); nieces Emily Kegerreis, (David), Rebecca Queral (Andrew), and Leah Pierce;  and grand-nieces Hana and Clara Kegerreis.

Visitation with the family will be Thursday, September 17 from 7-9 p.m. at Crumpler Funeral Home, Raeford. A celebration of life will be Friday, September 18 at 1 p.m. at Antioch Presbyterian Church, 6583 Red Springs Road, Red Springs, NC 28377.

In lieu of flowers contribute to his legacy of service with support to: Antioch Presbyterian Church, Red Springs;  Raeford/Hoke Habitat for Humanity, Raeford; or SECU Family House in Winston Salem.

Fran Cooper

Fran Cooper, 59, of Raeford, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015.
Survivors are: husband, Harold; sons, Michael Mayers, Thomas, Harold II, Joshua; daughters, Tammy Moss, Samantha Mayers, Grace Holland; brothers, Jimmy Connor and John Britt Jr.; sister, Linda Collins; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Thursday, September 17 at 1 p.m. in Saint Pauls Funeral Home in St. Pauls. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery in St. Pauls. 

Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

Roy F. Tedder

Roy Franklin Tedder, 88, of Red Springs, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015.
He was a Navy veteran.
Survivors are: wife, Edna; son, Michael Carr; daughters, Deborah Bullard, Teresa Worriax and Kim Locklear; brother, Donald; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, September 15 at 2 p.m. in Westside Baptist Church. Burial will be in Alloway Cemetery. 

Visitation will be held Monday, September 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Crumpler Funeral Home in Red Springs.

 

Brenda Culbreth

Brenda V. Culbreth of Garner died September 9, 2015 in WakeMed at the age of 69.

She was born in Smithfield on February 20, 1946 to the late Libron Moore Vause and Kathleen Taylor Vause. She retired from the city of Raleigh after 34 years of service.

She is survived by her husband, of 39 years, Malcolm "Mac" Culbreth, Jr. of Garner; her son, Malcolm "Mac" Culbreth III and his wife Susan of Smithfield; her grandchildren, Caleb and Katee Grace Culqreth; her brother Linwood Vause of Wilsons Mills; and one sister Patricia Renn of Charlotte.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Raeford Cemetery.

The family will receive friends after the service, at the gravesite.
