"Ellen" Ruth V. Currie

(Ellen) Ruth Vick Currie of Raeford passed away on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at Morrison Manor in Laurinburg at the age of 87. 
She was born in Mt. Croghan, South Carolina on April 30, 1930 to the late William Frank Morton and Myrtle Shue Morton. She was preceded in death by her first husband Angus Vick Jr. and her daughter, Susan Vick Leviner. She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School. She loved to work with flowers in her yard. She loved her family and friends, she never meet a stranger. 
She is survived by husband Bill Currie of Raeford; a son, Charles Vick and his wife Teresa of Wagram; one grandson, Josh Vick and his wife Grace Anne of Boiling Springs, South Carolina; one great-granddaughter, Harper Grace Vick of Boiling Springs, South Carolina; and three sisters, Lucille Capps of Laurinburg, Mary Jo Holland and her husband Lindy Wagram, and Connie Whitt of Wagram.
Visitation will be held Saturday March 3, 2018 from 1-2 p.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church, Raeford. 
The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. at the Church.
Burial will be in the Springhill Cemetery in Wagram.

Yvonne P. Ivey

Yvonne Page Ivey of Raeford passed away on Saturday, February 24, 2018 in the FirstHealth Hospice House at the age of 83.

She was born in Cumberland County on September 8, 1934. She was a member of the Raeford United Methodist Church and was an avid reader. She enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, and listening to music. She will always be remembered as a mother to many. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard "Doc" Ivey, her daughter, Lynn Ivey Upchurch, her mother Sudie Belle Ritter and her stepfather, Robert Ritter.

She is survived by her son, Mark Ivey and his wife, Amy of Southern Pines; her daughters, Kathy Ivey-Hathaway and her husband, Travis of Pittsboro; Beth I. Spivey and her husband, Allen of Beaufort, Gay I Barnes and her husband, Kenneth of Raleigh, and Wendy I. Hendrix and her husband, Karl of Raeford; 15 grandchildren, Brad, Jon, Sarah, Elizabeth, Michael, William, Ivey, Ashley, Joseph, Zac, Emily, Sam, Jessica, Kristen and Joshua; and 11 great-grandchildren, Ainsley, Liam, McKinley, Maya, Cameron, Olivia, Xander, Madison, Jayda, Eli and River.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 27 from 6-8 p.m. at Crumpler Funeral Home in Raeford.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at the Raeford United Methodist Church with the Rev. Brian Wingo officiating. Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

Henry L. Graham

Henry Louis Graham, 77, of Raeford, died on Wednesday, February 21, 2018.

The funeral was held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 25 at Mt. Sinai Church of the Living Word, Raeford.

Burial was in Lillys Chapel Cemetery, Red Springs.

Roy E. Coble

Roy E. Coble of Raeford passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2018 in his home at the age of 85.

He was born in Montgomery County on October 4, 1932 to the late Leo Coble and Lorena Chriserbury Coble. He was a member of Raeford First Baptist Church where he served as deacon. He served in the U.S.M.C.

He is survived by his wife Jean McPhail Coble of Raeford; 3 stepsons, Robert A. McPhail, William D. McPhail and Donald L. McPhail; and a stepdaughter, Kathryn H. McPhail. 

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 from 1-2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 336 N. Main Street, Raeford.

A Memorial Service will follow at 2 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Tom Lee officiating.

Robert M. Hawthorne

Robert M. Hawthorne of Raeford passed away Sunday, February 18, 2018 at FirstHealth Hospice House surrounded by his family. He was 87.
He was was born June 2, 1930 in Endicott, New York. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was employed with IBM for 38 years before he retired. His hobbies were fishing, golfing and spending time with his family, especially his great-grandson Peyton.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years Penny Hawthorne of Raeford; two sons, Rob Hawthorne and his wife Susan of Jackson, New Jersey and Dean Hawthorne and his wife Katherine of Indian Trail; a daughter, Susan Rogers and her husband Mike of Raeford; six grandchildren, Joe Hawthorne, Jennifer Hawthorne, Brittany McLeod and her husband Joshua, Jake Rogers, Morgan Rogler and her husband David and Nicole Rogers; three great-grandchildren, Peyton, Madison and Paul; and a brother, Jack Hawthorne and his wife Susan of Endicott.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Anna T. Watson

Anna T. Watson of Raeford passed away peacefully in her daughter's home on February 11, 2018. 
She was born May 14, 1925 in Garmisch, Germany, a proud Bavarian.
She met her late husband, James C. Watson, in the early 1950's in Garmisch where he was stationed. She immigrated to the U.S. in May of 1955 and married James in Baltimore, Maryland. She became a U.S. citizen in New York City in 1956. 
They traveled the world during his U.S. Army career. While stationed in Italy they had their only child, Caroline. They retired to Fayetteville in late 1968. 
She worked at Thalhimers in Cross Creek Mall for years and then Avis Rent-A-Car at the Fayetteville Airport. She was a Red Cross Volunteer at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii and Womack Army Medical Center, Ft Bragg. 
Anna enjoyed her many friends while drinking coffee and eating pastries at Hanseat European Bakery for many years. 
She is survived by her daughter Caroline Nicol and a few cousins in Garmisch and Regensburg, Germany. She was preceded in death by her parents Georg and Anna Glatz, husband James C. Watson and son-in-law Nic Nicol. 
A funeral Mass will be at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church, Raeford on Tuesday, February 27th at 11 a.m. There will be cake and coffee (her favorite) in the social hall immediately following the mass. 
In lieu of cut flowers, a potted plant may be donated to be planted in Anna's garden, or donations can be made to the Hospice Foundation of Hoke County in Anna's name at P.O. Box 1584, Raeford, NC 28376.

Barry B. Wood

Barry Baker Wood, 59, peacefully passed away at his home, Sunday, February 11, 2018 while surrounded by the love and comfort from his family. 
He was born January 1, 1959 to the late Donald and Betty Wood of Rockfish. He is survived by his brother Don (Lynn) of Wagram, his brother Todd (Sherry) of Rockfish and his sister Becky of the home, who did a truly amazing job of caring for him as he battled with cancer. He is also survived by nine nieces and nephews and 10 great nieces and nephews whom he enjoyed spending time with. 

He was well-known in Rockfish and was a faithful member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. After retirement from Kelly Springfield Tire Company (now known as Goodyear) in the early '90s, he enjoyed gathering with local residents at the Rockfish Café or at Wood's Small Engine Repair Shop. Always eager to help those in need, he did not meet a stranger and was known by all to have a sweet spirit about him. He enjoyed working in his garden. He cherished his pet dogs, Maggie and Blue. 
He will be laid to rest on Thursday, February 15, 2018. The family will receive guests from 2-2:45 p.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Rockfish, followed by a celebration of his life at 3 p.m. officiated by the Rev. Tommy Underwood. Interment will be in the church cemetery immediately following the funeral. 
The family is requesting that memorials and donations be made to Liberty Hospice, Raeford, or Tabernacle Baptist Church Rockfish.

Nathanial Lanier

Nathaniel Jackson Lanier Sr., 89, of Guyton, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loved ones.

He was born in Waycross to the late Walter Raleigh and Ruth Lanier.  He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Naomi Plummer Lanier; sister, Mary Lanie; and son, Nathaniel Jackson "Jack" Lanier Jr.  

He was a member of the Thunderbolt Masonic Lodge in Thunderbolt, Georgia and later a member of the Raeford Masonic Lodge # 306 in Raeford, where he resided for a number of years.  He had been employed with the Corp of Engineers and later with the City of Savannah.  He was a member of Christ Baptist Church in Ellabell.  He served in the National Guard Unit of the Georgia Hussars, 101^stC.A.V.M. and was a member of American Legion Post 209.  He enjoyed Bible reading every day, story writing about his grandchildren and gospel and classical music.  His greatest wish was for all of his grandchildren to be saved.  He had a kind heart and love for everyone, always sharing the love of his Savior with others.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Lanier; children, Gloria Gibson (Jimmy), Jean McClendon (Bill), Robert (Melodie), Billy and Terrell (Toni) Criswell; daughter-in-law, Karen Lanier; 13 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and two great-greatgrandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Strickland Funeral Home in Pooler, Georgia, with burial to follow at Lower Black Cemetery.

Jean Stephenson

Jean Ryan Boyles Stephenson of King passed away on February 9, 2018 at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her husband James L. Boyles, and later by her second husband, Roy Stephenson; sisters Annie Bentley and Olive Sullivan; and sons Bill Boyles and Jerry Boyles. 
She is survived by her son David (Donna) Boyles of King; sister, Dorothy (Murray) Davis of Goderich, Ontario; brother, Gerald (Shirley) Ryan of St. Johns, Newfoundland; a special niece, Karen Bentley of Claytong; randchildren Chris Boyles, Jennifer Boyles, Karen Boyles Connor, Susan Boyles (Lee) Ward, and James (Phoebe) Boyles; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews who she loved dearly. 
The family will receive guests 2-3 p.m. Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at Crumpler Funeral Home in Raeford with the funeral following in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be at Raeford Cemetery.

Maloy Whitley

Maloy Whitley, 81, of Raeford, died on Friday, February 2, 2018 at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at Buffalo Springs Baptist Church in Raeford.
Burial will be held in the church cemetery.

Fred Dew

Fred K. Dew, Sr., 79, was called to his heavenly home on January 31, 2018 surrounded by the comfort and love of his family.

He is preceded in death by his father, Harry C. Dew, Sr., brothers: Harry C. Dew, Jr. Robert C. Dew, Charles Pete Dew, and his wife of 56 years, Ellen G. Dew.

He is survived by his mother Betty Graham Dew, his son Fred K. Dew, Jr., his daughter Amanda G. Dew, his brothers: Harold Dew, Kenneth Dew, Edward (Eddie) Dew, and sisters: Doris Dew, Margaret Dew Whitten.

He grew up in Robeson County and lived in Cumberland County for over 50 years.  He attended and graduated from Hoke County High School where he enjoyed playing football and achieved All Conference.

He enlisted in the Air Force where he worked many classified assignments. He received his associate degrees in Heating/Air, Plumbing, and Electric.  He then went on to work for Riddle, Floyd, and later Dew Heating Co. He was a proud member of The Masons, The Eastern Star, and Amaranth. He served as a chairman on the Cumberland County District 8 School Board for several years and was a Deacon and a Sunday school teacher in his local church.  He was an excellent leader and enjoyed mentoring numerous employees over the years.

He was family oriented, always making the time to attend his children's activities as they were growing. Visitation will be Monday, February 5th from 6pm to 8pm at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Ave., Raeford, NC and the funeral will be Tuesday, February 6th at 2:00 pm at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 3219 Lindsay Rd., Raeford, NC with a grave side service to immediately follow.

Lacy Tyner

Lacy B. Tyner died Thursday, February 1, 2018 at the age of 63. 
He was born in Robeson County on June 13, 1954 to the late Ellen Jane Biggs Stevens. He is also preceded in death by his brothers Calton Derwood "Woody" Tyner and Joseph Stevens. His hobbies were fishing and riding motorcycles. He was a foreman with Thalle Construction, building many bridges in the United States.  
He is survived by a brother Harry M. Tyner and wife Tammy of Sanford, and a sister Joanne Hudson of Phoenix, AZ.  
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM, Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at Crumpler Funeral Home Chapel, 131 Harris Avenue, Raeford, NC.

Velma Chumley

Velma Crumpler Chumley, a loving wife, mother of three boys and six grandchildren, died in her home January 30, 2018 after a long illness. 
She was oldest child, born on February 12, 1932 in Clinton, to Gordon and Margaret Bradshaw Crumpler. She graduated from Highsmith Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Fayetteville as a registered nurse. She received special pediatric training at Duke University. She married Paul Franklin Chumley Sr. in 1960. They were married for 57 years.  
She was employed at Highsmith Hospital where she was head of the Pediatrics Floor and taught pediatrics after graduation. She later returned to work two nights a week, so she could care for her two boys. She was also was employed at Southeastern Regional Hospital in Lumberton. Upon marrying, the Chumley's lived in Waynesville, Asheville, and Lumberton, as her husband transferred. When her husband was promoted, they moved to Columbia, South Carolina where she was one of the first registered nurses employed by Lexington County Hospital when it opened. She again worked two nights a week relieving the head night nurse and other different positions for many years.

She was an active member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church where she served on numerous committees. She and several other ladies formed a team called the "Mop Squad", where they cleaned homes for sick and disabled people free of charge. She also along with other ladies performed skits at church functions like the churches Fall Festival.  
She is survived by her husband Paul F. Chumley Sr.; sons and daughters-in-law, Paul Jr. and Jodi Chumley of Lexington, Gregory (Greg) and Donna Chumley of Lexington, and Garrett (Gary) Chumley of McKinney, Texs; six grandchildren, Brittany, Lauren, Katie, Grayson, Luke, and Noah; her brothers, Franklin (Dayne) Crumpler of Raeford, and Vernon (Pam) Crumpler of Southern Pines.  
The funeral will be held at Riverland Hills Baptist Church in Irmo, South Carolina, with burial at Bush River Gardens Cemetery, on Bush River Road. The family will receive friends at prior to the services at the church.

Roy Turner

Roy Turner of Fayetteville died Friday, January 26, 2018 at Duke University Hospital.

He was a member of Galatia Presbyterian Church where he served as Sunday school treasurer, church treasurer, deacon and elder.

He served in the U.S. Air Force, volunteered at Lake Rim Volunteer Fire Department and served on the Cumberland County Joint Planning Board.  He was a blood donor for more than 30 years. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Elsa Pollmann Turner of Fairfield, California and his parents-in-law, John McNatt and Mary Stewart Johnson Gillis of the Galatia Church community in Cumberland County.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Gillis Turner; his daughter, Mary Stewart Turner Mudryk, her husband Jason and their sons, Matthew, Andrew and John of Raleigh; his son Daniel Turner and his wife Jessica West Turner of Wilmington; his sister Juanita Turner Keranen and her husband, Roger, of Salem, South Carolina; and two nieces, Kristin Keranen of New York, New York, and Katherine Keranen of Atlanta, Georgia.

The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Galatia Presbyterian Church with the funeral following at 11, Pastor Brett Johnson officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.
