Marvin Stephens

Marvin J. Stephens died Friday, June 8, 2018 in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center at the age of 58.
He was born September 22, 1959 to Belton and Lucy Stephens of Rockfish.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a brother, William Stephens.
Survivors include a brother, Vernon Stevens and his wife Cindy, a sister, Wanda Sue Williams and her husband, Roger, all of Raeford; and his extended family, Carl Taylor and sons Wayne and James. 
A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.

Marian Sumner

Marian Eva Gibson Sumner of Lumber Bridge passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 in the FirstHealth Hospice House at the age of 92.
She was born in Robeson County on May 27, 1926 to Merritt Simpson Gibson and Ethel Deaton Gibson. She was past president of the Ladies Auxiliary at the Lumber Bridge Fire Department and a member of the Lumber Bridge Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Flora Macdonald College and worked in Civil Service at Ft. Bragg. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sidney E. Sumner; her granddaughter, Kimberly McMillan Porter; her brother, Jeptha David Gibson; and her sisters, Margery Miller, Louise Freeman.
She is survived by her daughters, Faye McMillan of Raeford, and Pamela Lewis (Ricky) of Lumber Bridge; her son, John E. Sumner of Las Vegas, Nevada; her grandchildren, Kristy Newton (David) of Raeford, Sidney Lewis (Christina) of Vass, Richard Lewis of Lumber Bridge, Selena Stoney (Carlton) of Charleston, South Carolina, John Sumner (Rachel) of Summerville, South Carolina, and Angela Sumner of Lopez Island, Washington; her great-grandchildren, Cody Porter (Mary Lou) of Austin, Texas, Dylan and Coleton McMillan, both of Raeford, Lizzy and Abbey Newton both Raeford, Sidney, Riley Ann and Sawyer Lewis, all of Vass, Addison, Ellison and Piper Stoney all of Charleston, and Destiny Underwood and Darius Burris both of Fayetteville; great- great-grandchildren, Emma and Brodie Porter of Austin; and her brother, Merritte Gibson (Sherry) of Carolina Beach.
The visitation will be 1-2 p.m. at Crumpler Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 5, 2018, with the funeral at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Wayne Sanderson officiating. Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

Bessie Patterson

Bessie Kate Joyce Patterson, age 97, born December 25, 1920 in Stokes County, North Carolina, passed peaceably in her home in Raeford, on May 30, 2018. She was married for 73 years to Herman Lindsay Patterson (Pastor of the Spray Primitive Baptist Church in Eden). She was the eighth of 14 children in the family of Joseph Hardin Joyce and Hettie Eugenia Shaffer.
She graduated valedictorian of her class at Stoneville High School. She lived her life placing God and family first. From self-sacrificing mother to business manager she always gave her best; she was always there—a wonderful example.
She is survived by her three children, Lindsay Patterson and wife Judy of Cave Creek, Arizona, Linda and husband Benny McLeod of Raeford, and Dr. Joseph Patterson and wife Gwynn of Sierra Vista, Arizona; seven grandchildren, Lindy, Laura, David, Beth, Michael, John, and James; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, brothers and sisters.
A graveside sService will be held in her memory at Overlook Cemetery, Eden on Saturday, June 9 at 1 p.m.

Doroth Tarleton

Dorothy Mae Melton Tarleton, age 97, passed from this world to Heaven Friday, 1 June 2018 at Lumberton Health and Rehabilitation in Lumberton. A graveside service was held in the Raeford (Hillcrest) Cemetery in Raeford on Sunday, 3 June at 2 p.m.
She was born in 1920, the oldest daughter of Roy Boyd Melton and Hattie Meeks Melton of Wadesboro, and granddaughter of Wade Hampton Melton and Nancy Allen and Harvey Meeks and Minnie Pigg. She and her nine siblings grew up in Wade Mill Village, Wadesboro, and attended the Baptist church there. Called "Polly" by kin, she married and raised her family in Wadesboro, then Rockingham, and finally in Raeford. While there, the family attended Raeford Baptist Church and she worked in the offices of Para Thread and U.S. Rubber. She moved from Raeford to Ft. Pierce, Florida in 1968, where she retired after working 15 years in the offices of the Fort Pierce Utilities Authority. She moved to Lumberton in 1996.
Preceding her in death are brothers William F. Melton and wife Nancy of Jefferson, Bernest G. Melton and wife Ruth of Scaly Mountain, and Franklin Leroy Melton of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and sisters Vonnette Melton Mullen of Youngstown, Ohio, and Esther Melton Zabala of Fort Pierce.
She is survived by brother Richard H. Melton and wife Priscilla of Fort Pierce, and sisters Irene Melton Kandill of Fort Pierce, Betty Melton Rogers of Wadesboro, and Nancy Melton Sizemore of Box Springs, Georgia.
Her three children currently live in Lumberton. They are Sylvia Jean Tarleton Niven and husband Julius Judson Niven Jr. whose children are David Jonathan Niven and Lisa Renee Niven Daniel; Marilyn Joyce "Lynn" Tarleton whose children are Michael Wesley Pond and Robert Eugene Pond; and Alfred McInnis "Mac" Tarleton Jr. and wife Sarah Marie Leach whose children are Brian Gregory Tarleton and Angela Denise Tarleton Oncul. She has 16 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Donella McKoy

Donella McKoy, 71, of Raeford, died Saturday, May 26, 2018.

Public viewing will be held on Friday, June 1 from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Purcell Funeral Home Chapel, Laurinburg.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 2 at Word of Life Temple, Raeford.

Burial will follow in the Shady Grove Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery, Snow Hill.

Patricia G. Kirkpatrick

Patricia "Pat" Gore Kirkpatrick went to her heavenly home while being surrounded by her family on May 30, 2018.
She was born in Hoke County on June 1, 1947 to the late Clayton Gore and Almadie Allen Gore. She was employed with Milliken Textiles and Campbell Soup before finding her calling as a CNA. She loved and cared for people and sharing God's love with them. She will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Lillie Gore and Joyce Gore Dees.
She is survived by her children, Larry Haney (Vicky), Allison Whitt (Jeff), Joy Tompkins (Roy), Sarah Franco-Galindo (Claudio) and her adopted son, Steve Miller; her grandchildren, Nikki Ferber, Erica Whitt, Kristy Whitt, Terry Hubbard, Christopher Locklear, Jeremiah Stewart, and Taylor Tompkins; and her great-grandchildren, Ryan Ferber, Hanna Ferber, and Allie Whitt.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, June 1, 2018 at Crumpler Funeral Home-Raeford.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Hillcrest Baptist Church with Pastor Toby Neal officiating. Burial will be in the Highland Biblical Gardens.

Sydney L. Green

Sydney Lee Green of Aberdeen passed away Monday, May 29, 2018 at his home at the age of 81. 
He was born in Alabama on January 25, 1937 to Lewis Henry Green and Virgil Blankinship Green who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his wife Ruth Wilson Green. 
He was a member of Ashley Heights Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and retired with the State of North Carolina. 
He is survived by three sons, Dwight Green of Aiken, South Carolina, David Green (Brooke) of Siler City, and Donald Ghant (Michelle), also of Aiken; two daughters, Shirley McFadyen of Vass, and Sonja Sullivan (Johnny) of Carthage; three stepchildren; 13 grandchildren; six great–grandchildren; and a sister, Tommie Fields of Harpersville, Alabama.
A visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday May 31, 2018 at Crumpler Funeral Home 40229 US 1 Hwy. Aberdeen. 
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2018 at Ashley Heights Baptist Church 10351 Aberdeen Road, Aberdeen, NC, with the Rev. Donald Vinson officiating.

Johnny Dees

Johnny E. Dees of Raeford Passed away on Sunday, May 27, 2018 at Manor Care in Pinehurst at the age of 80. 
He was born in Fayetteville on March 4, 1938, to the late Harry E. Dees and Iris Hathcock Powell. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Aaron Gauge Dees and a half-brother, Dennis Lee Powell. He worked for the City of Raeford as Animal Control officer before he retired. 
He is survived by his son, John E. Dees Jr., of Raeford; two sisters, Maxine Vislar (Mike) of Hope Mills, and Donna Rae Sanmiguel (Sammy) of Texas; a brother, Steve Dees of Hickory; and a half-brother, Dale Powell (Joanne) of Raeford.
A private memorial service will be held later.

Dewilla A. Mansfield

Dewilla Ann Mansfield, 79, of Oak Island, passed away Sunday, May 20, 2018 at her home.

She was born March 9, 1939, in Columbus County, daughter of the late Hoyt Shelley and Donnie Bell Fowler Shelley.  She grew up in Raeford and started working at Burlington Coat Factory.  It was there that she met the love of her life, Ray Mansfield. They began their life together more than 65 years ago and many said they never had an argument. In 1981 they became the owners of Jiffy Bait and Tackle on Oak Island and in 1983 opened Mansfield Heating and Air. They continued to be side by side together, being a loyal, hardworking team until Mr. Mansfield's sickness and death.  Both of them were icons in the Oak Island community for many years, especially being active in Oak Island Presbyterian Church.  The community enjoyed their Christmas decorations as many of them attended their annual Christmas party. Mrs. Mansfield loved working in her yard and garden.  She always had the help of Matthew and Jimmy, who they say helped shape their lives forever.  In addition to her husband Ray Mansfield, preceding her in death was a son James Ray Mansfield, brother, Jerry Shelley, and sister, Sheila Shelley. 

Survivors include her children, Sheila Mansfield Bell of Oak Island, Sidney Mansfield, of Oak Island, Perry Mansfield of Southport, Jimmy Mansfield of Wilmington, and Matthew Mansfield of Southport; sisters, Margaret Lanier of Chadbourn and Mary Jo Strickland of Cerro Gordo; grandchildren, Jamie Bell, Sidney Mansfield II, Brandon Mansfield, and Drew Mansfield;and  great-grandchildren, Sidney Mansfield, III "Trey", Brantley Bell, and Westlyn Mansfield.  

A Memorial Service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Ocean View United Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred Roberts officiating.

George G. Dickson Jr.

George Graham Dickson Jr., 78, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away on May 2, 2018.

He was born in Pinehurst on August 26, 1939. His parents were George Graham Dickson and Isabel Lamont Dickson. He graduated from Fort  Lauderdale High School in 1957 and received a law degree from the University of Florida.

He worked as an attorney for more than 40 years, first in Fort Lauderdale and then in Sarasota. He was an active member of the YMCA. He was also a Mason, a Shriner and a Lt. Colonel in the Army Reserve.

He is survived by his brother, Donald Dickson of Chapel Hill; his nieces, Isabel Dickson Goodson of Denver Colorado, and Katherine Anne Dickson Burns, Jennie Dickson Mills and Claire Dickson, all of Chapel Hill; and many cousins from the Dickson and Lamont families.

Nancy Jo Brady

Nancy Jo (Schermerhorn) Brady, 64, died on Friday, May 18, 2018 in her home surrounded by family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her father Paul Schermerhorn of Hammond, New York and a sister Cheryl Schermerhorn of Owensboro, Kentucky.

She retired from Cumberland County Schools after serving 31 years. She spent the first 24 years in the classroom and the remaining seven years in the school system's new teacher support program. She continued mentoring new teachers after she retired.

She served as choir director for Highland Baptist Church and conductor for the annual Singing Christmas Tree program since December 2002. Her passion, however, was Children's Church teacher and Wednesday Warriors Children Program teacher.She previously served as choir director at Victory Methodist Church in Massy Hill, and 15 years as choir director and organist at Galatia Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband, Jason Brady of the home; a son Matthew Brady and wife Brittany of Raeford; her mother Marlene Schermerhorn of Hammond; her sisters Dawn Merna and husband William of Ogdensburg, New York, and Polly Sergel of Hammond; her brothers, Ryan Schermerhorn and wife Kari of Gouverneur, New York, and Clay Schermerhorn and wife Nichole of Burnt Hills, New York.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. Wednesday May 23, 2018 at Highland Baptist Church, 4456 Legion Rd, Hope Mills, NC 28348.

A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 6:30 p.m. with Pastor Zach Kennedy officiating. 

Burial will follow at a later date.

Julian M. McArthur

Julian "Morton" McArthur, age 79, of 997 Pinebluff LakeRoad in Aberdeen went to be with the Lord on May 19,2018 and was surrounded by his loving family.

He was born to Aline and Jo McArthur on February 6,1939 in Rowland. He married the love of his life Lena Hazelwood on May 21,1960. They celebrate 58 years of love and marriage.  He was extremely loving and very proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had a passion for art,an extreme green thumb for growing vegetables and beautiful plants, and a heart of gold. He was preceded in death by his mother Aline McArthur and his father Jo McArthur and two brothers Bob McArthur and Jim McArthur.

He is survived by his wife Lena H. McArthur; three daughters, Becky Byrd and her husband Ken Byrd, Dale Arbogast and her husband George Arbogast, and Rene' Oxendine and her husband Israel Oxendine; one son, Bobby McArthur and his wife Mary McArthur; eight grandchildren, James, Andrew, Stephen, Nicole, Brittany, Cain, Elana and Andrea; two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Alexa; two great-grandchildren-to-be, Ellyanah and Nehemiah; several step-grandchildren; a brother, Larry McArthur and his wife Doris McArthur; and two sisters, Betty Jo Humphrey and Francis Clifton.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 from 5-6 p.m. at Turning Point Worship Center, 16433 US Hwy 15 501. A celebration of his life will follow the visitation.

Younger S. Wood

Younger Stephens "Woody" Wood of Rockfish passed away on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at the age of 48.

He was born on December 31, 1969 to the late Robert Wood and Loretta Stephens Wood.

A proud and simple man, he never met a stranger. He was a hard worker and loved his family very much.

He leaves behind, his wife, Cherry Wood of Hope Mills; his daughters, Amanda Wood Pike (Brett) of Rockfish, Carly Wood of Rockfish, Ashley Wood of Rockfish, and Stevie "D" Wood of Rockfish; his siblings, Rocky Wood of Raeford, Gathael Wood of Raeford, and Sandra Jones and her husband Wayne of Raeford; and his granddaughters, Tori, Randi, and Raegan.

The family will receive friends Thursday, May 17, 2018 from 3-4 p.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church. 

The funeral will begin at 4 p.m. in the church sanctuary with the Rev. Tommy Underwood officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
