Vera Bennett

Vera Laverne Smith Bennett of Raeford died Saturday, July 24, 2021, at the age of 75.
She was born in Charleston SC, on Sept. 29, 1945, to the late Joseph Nealy Smith and Verajean Harrison Smith. She was a prayer warrior and a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. Her devotion and faith in Christ never wavered even through her sickness.  She found great joy in traveling across the world, cooking, sewing, and being a Pastors wife. 
She is survived by her husband of 56 years Stephen Wayne Bennett of Raeford; a daughter Deborah B. Locklear and her husband Kevin of Raeford; and two grandchildren Dustin Locklear and Karissa Locklear both of Raeford.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 pm Monday, July 26, 2021, at Crumpler Funeral Home in Raeford.
The funeral will be held 2:00 pm Tuesdayat Hillcrest Baptist Church, 2699 US-401 Business, Raeford. with Pastor Trent Haywood officiating. 
Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

James M. Reynolds

James Michael Reynolds died July 20, 2021.  He was surrounded by his family after a short illness. 

He was employed with CP&L later Duke Power for more than 40 years. He served as a Deacon and in other roles in Ashley Heights Baptist Church.  He loved to farm and ride his tractors.  He was a dedicated member of the Pinehill Fire Department for 37 years, serving as an officer for many of those years.

He was preceded in death by his father James Cecil Reynolds and mother Flora Louise. 

He is survived by his wife Vickie; sons Tony (Darby), and Chris (Liz); sister, Martha Parks (Ray); grandchildren, Austin (Haley), Hailey, Lauren, Mackenzie, and John David; and great-grand child, Hudson.

A visitation will be held Friday, July 23, 2021 from 11 a.m to noon at the Ashley Heights Baptist Church in Aberdeen followed by a service at noon. Burial will follow in the Ashley Heights Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in memory of James Michael Reynolds to the Ashley Heights Baptist Church Building Fund.

Donna Cummings

Donna Kay Cummings of Aberdeen died July 19, 2021 at age 60.
She was born in Moore County on August 30, 1960 to the late Anderson Frye and Virginia Lonkert. She was a fun-loving person who loved gathering with her family and her friends. She will be remembered as a firecracker to her family and friends. She loved and lived life to the fullest...her way.
She is preceded in death by her granddaughter, Brianna, and her great-grandson, Hayden.
She is survived by her daughters, Christina Cummings (Robert) of Marston and Dianna Cummings (Steve) of Aberdeen; and her grandchildren, Te'Ara, Donavon, Kelvyn, and Jacob.
Service arrangements will remain private.
Care of the family is entrusted to Crumpler Funeral Home-Aberdeen.

Eunice Strub

Eunice Marie Whitney Strub, 62, of Raeford, died July 15, 2021, at FirstHealth Hospice House in West End,\.

She was born December 30,1958 in Cook County, Illinois, the daughter of George Edward Whitney and Lois Vilie Lenahan.   She was preceded in death by her husband Richard James "Jim" Strub; her father, George E. Whitney; and a brother, George Whitney.

She is survived by her life partner, John Engman; three daughters, Angie Corrado (Ronald), April Norton (Donnie), and Callie Strub; a stepson, Michael Strub; her mother, Lois Lenahan;  two sisters, Lila Chouinard and Shirley Schulz; and a brother, Richard Whitney.  She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Shannon Morello, Savannah Norton, Cayleigh Norton, Shelby Strub, Sydney Strub, Yazmine Kershaw, Alyssa Norton, Dakana Locklear, Nolan Corrado and Madisyn Norton, and two great-grandchildren, Jace Morello and Braxton Long.

A memorial service was held Monday, July 19 at 3 p.m. at St. Matthews Methodist Church in Fayetteville.

Mary T. Whiteside

Mary Thornberry Whiteside of Raeford died on July 18, 2021with her daughters and her fur baby Lizzy by her side.
She was born on August 29, 1948 in Louisville, Kentucky, the daughter to the late Albert R. Thornberry, Sr. and the late Lillie "Mary" Smiley. She met and married the love of her life, the late Kenneth W. Whiteside in 1972 who preceded her in death in 2002. Mary always had a kind word and smile for everyone that she met. She loved to cook, sewing, crafting, ceramics, her dogs, but most of all family and friends. Mary always could make you smile or laugh or provide a big hug if needed.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Albert "Cotton" Thornberry Jr. of Corbin, Kentucky; sisters, Edna Eartherly of Louisville, Janice "Honey" Embry of Paynesville, Kentucky; her father- and mother-in-law, George and Rose Whiteside of Ohio; brothers-in-law Jim "Bubba" Eartherly and Kenneth "George" Embry; a nephew, Bobby; and several fur babies who she loved and missed dearly. 
She is survived by daughters Julie Miller, Cheri Cherry; granddaughter, Kayla Whiteside; great-grandson Bryan; sons-in-law Kenny Miller and Mark Cherry; grandson-in-law Josh Howie; brother Jim Thornberry and wife Kay of Falls of Rough, Kentucky; and sister-in-law Brenda Thornberry of Corbin
A visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m. Friday, July 23, 2021 at Crumpler Funeral Home, Raeford, with the funeral following at 3 p.m.

William L. McFadyen

William "Bill" Lewis McFadyen, 70, of Cameron, died Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at his home.
He was born on May 4, 195, to the late James Lewis and Daisy Marks McFadyen and grew up in Raeford. He spent his career working with Carolina Power and Light Company and also served in the Army National Guard. He was an outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting. He had a passion for cooking and sharing with family and friends.  
He is survived by his son, Jeffrey McFadyen of Raleigh; daughters, Kristin McFadyen Peptis of Apex and Meghan McFadyen Yovich and husband Daniel of Fuquay Varina; sisters, Marie Johnson, Vonnie Welsh, both of Cameron, and Kaye Maruzzella of Greensboro; and grandchildren, Tyler, Tanner and Addilyn. 
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at 4 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Christian Church in Lobelia.
A Visitation will be held on Monday, July 19, 2021 from 6-8 p.m. at Cox Memorial Funeral Home in Vass.

Howard Robert

Howard Philip Robert of Lumber Bridge died Monday, July 5, 2021, at his home.
He was born in Middletown, Ohio on December 11, 1934. He valiantly served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War. After a successful military career, he retired as a decorated U.S. Army Warrant Officer.
He was a compassionate Christian gentleman and friend to everyone he met. Prior to the death of his wife, Jennifer, they attended West Fayetteville Baptist Church.
He is survived by a stepdaughter, Jacqueline Whitbeck, two daughters Kathryn (Cindy) Diller and Tonia Boahn, and a son, DeWitt Howard.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 22, 2021, at the Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Swann of West Fayetteville Baptist Church officiating.
Full Military honors will be held at the gravesite.
In lieu of flowers friends are encouraged to make donations to Wounded Warrior Project.

William Lupo

William Anthony (Bill) Lupo died Saturday, July 10, 2021 at his home at age 67. 
He was born September 22, 1953 in Robeson County to the late William Clyde Lupo and Betty Jackson Smoak. He was preceded in death by his brother Dustin Lupo and his mother-in- law Gladys Dunn. He was the owner and operator of Lupo's Painting service before he retired.
He is survived by his wife of all most 40 years Nancy Long Lupo of Lumber Bridge; four children, Michelle Oldham of Raeford, Health Lupo and his wife Mandy of Raeford, Jennifer Lowery and her husband Jamie of Raeford, and Jonathan Lupo of Raeford; 10 grandchildren, Darrick Furmage, Austin Lowery, Alexis Revels, Ethan Lupo, Kayleigh Revels, Mason Crowder, McKinley (Punkin) Lowery, Brooklyn Lupo, Cade Lowery and Donovan Lupo; and five sisters, Joan Taylor  and her husband Howard of Charlotte, Gail Calloway and her husband Larry of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Pat Gray and her husband Tony of Lumber Bridge, Cathy Stedman and her husband Danny of St. Pauls, and Lori Lowry and her husband Larry of St. Pauls.    
A visitation will be held from 2-3 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, 2021, at the Raeford Evangelical Methodist Church.
The funeral will follow at 3 p.m. with Pastor Roger Burns officiating. Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

Phyllis McNeill

Phyllis Baker McNeill, age 92, died peacefully at home on July 9th, surrounded by family. 
She was born to Faye Oliver Baker and Walter Presley Baker on May 16, 1929. She married the love of her life, James Luther McNeill on December 28, 1950. They  cherished their 59 years of marriage. Luke preceded her in death in 2010.
Survivors include her sister, Faye Baker Jordan, and many nephews and nieces, greats and great greats. She was a beloved aunt. 
The funeral will be held on Monday, July 12, at 1 p.m. at the Raeford Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bill Foster officiating. Visitation will follow in the John C. Ropp Fellowship Hall.

Diane H. Johnson

Diane Holland Johnson of Raeford died Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at UNC Chapel Hill at age 68.
She was born in Hoke County to the late Thomas William Holland and Dixie Teal Holland. She was an avid gardener. She had a gift for caring for animals. She loved making homemade crafts and was the best cook around.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Gertrude Holland, and Margaret Sue Harris; 10 brothers, Carlyle Holland, Bobby Holland, J.C. Holland, Lindy Holland, Rick Holland, Don Holland, Benny Holland, Gene Holland, Randy Holland and David Holland; and a great-granddaughter, Sessalee Diane Hunt.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years Anton D. Johnson of Raeford; two daughter, Sabrina Holt and her husband Billy of Fayetteville, and Lydia D. Johnson of Raeford; a son, Allen Johnson (Beth) of Raeford; 10 grandchildren, Hannah, Michael, Tayla, Daisy, Kirstan, Charlie, Caley, Whisper, Cameron and Jason; five great-grandchildren, Nakota, Chesslee, Braxton, Jaxon and Halona; and a brother, Johnny F. Holland of Raeford.

Ira Locklear Jr.

Ira Frederick (Fred) Locklear Jr. of Shannon in Hoke County died Monday June 28, 2021 at age 36.
He was born in Robeson County on May 24, 1985. He was preceded in death by Mother Wanda Kaye Strickland.
He is survived by his father Ira Frederick Locklear Sr. of Shannon; two sisters, Tasha Chavis and her husband Ronnie of Wagram, and Zakayla Locklear of Shannon; a brother, Ivan Locklear of Ohio; six nieces, Talaya Tyler, Kelsey Tyler, Kaleigha Hunt, Hanna Chavis, Isla Locklear, and Aurora Locklear; a nephew, William Locklear; and two great-nieces and a great-nephew;.

Dorothy Scarboro

Dorothy Mae Scarboro died Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Quail Haven Retirement Village in Pinehurst at age 91.
She was born September 12, 1929 to the late Alex and Ellen Wallace. She was a homemaker raising seven children. She was a sweet, kind, caring person enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Edgar Scarboro, her son Everette "Hoss" Scarboro, daughter-in-law Carol Scarboro, grandson Robert "Robbie" Scarboro II, and her sisters and brothers.
She is survived by her sons, James Scarboro (Juanita) of Aberdeen, Robert Scarboro (Sandy) of Aberdeen, and Jerry Scarboro (Dianne) of Raeford; daughters Margaret Burns (Johnnie) of Pinebluff, Kathie Samples (Mike) of Whispering Pines, and Linda Patrick (Tim) of Pinehurst; and several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen. The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery.

Rita F. Hall

Rita Faye Fulk Hall of Red Springs (Hoke County) died Sunday, May 30, 2021, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital at age 60.
She was born on January 12, 1961 to the late Si Fulk and Nancy Locklear. She was a member of God's Holy Tabernacle Church in Red Springs.
She was preceded in death by her son Christopher Lee Fields. 
She is survived by her husband, Earl Hall of Red Springs; two daughters, Sharon Morales, and Gracie Caulder, both of Red Springs; four sons, David Alan Fields (Shannon Ochoa),  Jonathan Fields (Sandra), Robert Caulder, and Alexander Bell Hall, all of Red Springs; two stepdaughter,s Tina Marie Locklear (Trent) of Shannon, and Tawana Fields of Parkton; two stepsons, Earl Hall Jr. (Kris) of Indiana and Purcell Henderson (Sarah) of Red Spring; four brothers, Gary Fulk (Hazel) of Vass,  Si Fulk of Winston-Salem, Michael Fulk (Dina) of Wilkesboro, and Riley Fulk of California; two sisters, Gail Garbo (Joe) of Mississippi and Linda Hutchins (Phillip) of Winston-Salem; grandchildren Jewel Gillespie, Cheyann, Fields, Calista Arboleda, Estevan Arboleda, Kirston Fields, Marco Arboleda,, Keyara Fields, J.C. Norman McCLendon

Norma Jean Lanier McClendon, 74, of Raeford, died peacefully at her home on Monday, May 24, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Savannah, GA, May 22, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Nathaniel J. and Naomi Plummer Lanier.  As a young lady, she moved to Fayetteville and she soon found a home at Grace Baptist Church and also found her future husband there.  On August 6, 1966, she married William "Bill" McClendon, Jr.  The two moved to Charlotte and soon started a family.  She had worked as a certified medical assistant and a phlebotomist for many years.  The family would move to Aberdeen in 1978 before settling in Raeford where they became members of the First Baptist Church of Raeford.  She continued her medical career by working at the Sandhills Pediatrics for 17 years because of her love of the children.
She was a virtuous woman who accepted her Lord and Savior.  She was kind and loving to everyone she met.  Jean enjoyed spending time in her garden and tending to her flowers.  She loved her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her brothers Jackie Lanier and David Lanier.  She is survived by her husband Bill E. McClendon, Jr.  She was the mother of Melanie Cifers, husband Daryl, William "Billy" McClendon, III, wife Amy, Charles Daniel McClendon, wife Heather, and Natalie McClendon, husband Rodney.  She is also survived by her seven grandchildren:  Cayleigh, Cassie, Charlie, Madison, Sydney, Harley and Kylie.  She was the sister of Gloria Gibson of Clyde, NC.  Jean is survived by her step-mother Geraldine Criswell Lanier and her family; aunt Edna Yeakle and a large extended family from Savannah, GA and Clyde, NC.
A celebration of her life will be held at the First Baptist Church of Raeford, 333 N. Main St. Raeford, NC on Saturday at noon.  The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 6-8 p.m.

Ardenia M. Davis

Ardenia McMillan Davis of Lumber Bridge, a lifetime residence of the Stonewall Community, died Friday, May 21, 2021
She was born in Hoke County on November 26, 1923, to the late Alexander McMillan and Minnie Stubbs McMillan. She was preceded in death by her husband Jeff Davis, three sons, Bobby Davis, Donald Davis, Cecil Davis, and two sons-in-law, Ralph Pandure and Danny D. Howard.
She is survived by two daughters, Bertha (Bert) Pandure of Raeford, and Janice Howard of Lumber Bridge; a son, Ronnie Davis of Lumber Bridge; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Wanda Phillips
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the home place with the Rev. Dwight Jackson officiating.
