James Earl Jones

James Earl Jones passed away Thursday, December 6, 2012 at his home in Brentwood, Tennessee surrounded by his family. He was born September 19, 1944 to John Allen and Willa Conoly Jones in Lumber Bridge. He graduated from Hoke High School. He served in the Navy during Vietnam before attending East Carolina University. He was a longtime resident of Brentwood, where he was a successful businessman, avid volunteer and devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife of over 40 years, Carol; sons, Christopher Neal Jones of Nashville and Michael Reed (Kristine) Jones of Pasadena, California; daughters, Kelly Anne Jones of Chattanooga and Kimberly Lynn Jones of Brentwood; granddaughter, Elena Arevik Jones; brothers, Whiteford and William Jones; sister, Catherine McNiell; sister-in-law, Barbara Jones all of North Carolina; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. he was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Jesse and Robert Jones; and sisters, Anne Oliver and Mary Cobb. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, December 9 at Williamson Memorial, at 4 p.m., David Kidd officiating, with visitation two hours preceding the service (2-4 pm). An additional memorial will be held at Sandy Grove United Methodist Church in Lumber Bridge at a date to be announced. Howard C. Ross

Howard Connell Ross, 77, of Raeford, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2012.
Survivors are: wife, Martha; children, John, Ricky, Stephanie, Natassja, Diane, Cynthia and Rhonda; siblings, Dean, Clarence and Michael; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Fri. Dec. 7 at 1 p.m. in St. James United Church of God. Burial will be in Highland Biblical Gardens.
Viewing, noon to 7 p.m. today at Buie Funeral Home in Raeford.

Mary O. Teal

Mary Oldham Teal of Raeford died Wednesday, December 5, 2012 in her home at the age of 88.
She was born in Tatum, South Carolina on October 11, 1924 to the late Fletcher and Martha Saunders Oldham. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond A. Teal; two sisters, Lillian Miller and Mae Butler; and three brothers, Eulus Oldham, Lewis Oldham, and James Oldham. She was a lifetime member of the Raeford Presbyterian Church.
Survivors are her sons, Dale Teal and Harold Teal both of Raeford; her daughters, Carole Crittenden, Martha Jo Davis and her husband, Charles, Ginger Matagi and her husband, Matt, all of Raeford; her brothers, Palmer Oldham and his wife Shirley of Red Springs, and Tommy Oldham of Red Springs; eight grandchildren, Al Crittenden, Harold Teal and his wife Tonya, Robert Thorne, Jr. and his wife Sarah, Michele D'Annunzio and her husband John, Travis Matagi, Todd Davis, Chris Davis, Ashley Davis; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, December 7 at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Ave, Raeford.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 8 in the Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Braden officiating.

Faye Best

Faye Eugenia Stroupe Best died Saturday, December 1, 2012 following a lengthy illness. She was born January 9, 1926 to the late Henry and Wilma Arthurs Stroupe in Dallas, North Carolina, and was a 1943 graduate of Dallas High School and a 1944 graduate of Evans College of Business in Gastonia. Following her graduation she was employed by Public Service Natural Gas in Gastonia for several years. She married James Frederick Best of Dallas on August 30, 1949 who survives.
After her children entered elementary school, she returned to school, earning her associate degree from Sandhills Community College, and bachelors and M.Ed. from Pembroke State University. Following her graduation from Pembroke she was employed for many years as a reading specialist by the Hoke County School system. After retiring she served as a volunteer with the Hoke Literacy Council. She spent most of her adult life in Raeford, where she was an active member of Raeford Presbyterian Church, the Raeford Woman's Club and Chaminade Music Club. As a member at Raeford Presbyterian Church she was a member of the John Calvin Sunday School class, the Handbell Choir, served as Bible study leader and as chair of her circle and as president of Women of the Church who later recognized her with a life membership. She also served as Enabler for the Women of the Church for the Coastal Carolina Presbytery. Following her move to Charlotte in 2007, she transferred her membership to Matthews Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Martin and Janie Best of Matthews; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joanna and Wesley Huggins of Yadkinville, and Janet and James Pyatt of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, Lamar and Jean Stroupe of Dallas; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 4 at Holy Communion Lutheran Church, Dallas (the church of her childhood) with the Rev. William Pederson and the Rev. Dave Drysdale officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Gardens in Mount Holly.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Matthews Presbyterian Church, Raeford Presbyterian Church or Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte.

Deborah A. McKiver

Deborah Ann McKiver, 55, of Raeford, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012.
Survived by: brother, Monty Flynn.
The funeral was held Sunday, Dec. 2 at 2 p.m. in Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Burial was church cemetery.

Elizabeth "Lib" McVicker

Elizabeth (Lib) Norton McVicker of 1784 Rockfish Road, died Saturday, December 1, 2012 at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst.
She was born on October 20, 1945, to the late Carl Lester and Sara Louise Lee Norton,
She is also preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Garry Frederick. Lib was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church
She is survived by her husband, Billy F. McVicker of Raeford; a son, Chris Martin of Raeford, two stepsons, Tim McVicker and his wife Sherry of Graham, and Johnny McVicker and his wife Robin of Maxton; a stepdaughter Linda McDougald and her husband Jasper of Fayetteville; a sister Pam Norton Frederick of Raeford; three brothers, Billy Norton and his wife Myra of Lumberton, Don Norton and his wife Debbie of Raeford and Dale Norton and his wife Jill of Virginia Beach, Virginia; 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held Monday, December 3, 2012 from 7-9 p.m. at Crumpler Funeral Home in Raeford.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at the Hillcrest Baptist Church with the REv. Toby Neal officiating. Inurnment will be held in the Richmond Memorial Park in Rockingham.
