Faye Best

Faye Eugenia Stroupe Best died Saturday, December 1, 2012 following a lengthy illness. She was born January 9, 1926 to the late Henry and Wilma Arthurs Stroupe in Dallas, North Carolina, and was a 1943 graduate of Dallas High School and a 1944 graduate of Evans College of Business in Gastonia. Following her graduation she was employed by Public Service Natural Gas in Gastonia for several years. She married James Frederick Best of Dallas on August 30, 1949 who survives.
After her children entered elementary school, she returned to school, earning her associate degree from Sandhills Community College, and bachelors and M.Ed. from Pembroke State University. Following her graduation from Pembroke she was employed for many years as a reading specialist by the Hoke County School system. After retiring she served as a volunteer with the Hoke Literacy Council. She spent most of her adult life in Raeford, where she was an active member of Raeford Presbyterian Church, the Raeford Woman's Club and Chaminade Music Club. As a member at Raeford Presbyterian Church she was a member of the John Calvin Sunday School class, the Handbell Choir, served as Bible study leader and as chair of her circle and as president of Women of the Church who later recognized her with a life membership. She also served as Enabler for the Women of the Church for the Coastal Carolina Presbytery. Following her move to Charlotte in 2007, she transferred her membership to Matthews Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Martin and Janie Best of Matthews; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joanna and Wesley Huggins of Yadkinville, and Janet and James Pyatt of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, Lamar and Jean Stroupe of Dallas; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 4 at Holy Communion Lutheran Church, Dallas (the church of her childhood) with the Rev. William Pederson and the Rev. Dave Drysdale officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Gardens in Mount Holly.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Matthews Presbyterian Church, Raeford Presbyterian Church or Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte.
