Odessa L. Hagler

Odessa L. Hagler, 93, of 831 Loop Road, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013.
Survivors are: caretaker, Kenneth Purcell; a niece; and several grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Thursday, January 2 at 11 a.m. in Avery Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will be in church cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday, January 1 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Purcell Funeral Home in Southern Pines.

Bonnie A. Niven

Bonnie A. Niven, 90, of Raeford, died suddenly of natural causes early Thursday evening December 26, 2013 at Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. She was the last survivor of nine siblings of Daniel and Mary Vaughn Autry. She was a retired civilian employee with the Department of Defense at Fort Bragg. She worked during WWII as a parachute specialist at the Laurinburg-Maxton Army Air Base facility. She also worked as the church secretary for several years and as an LPN at various area facilities over the years. She was active in the church and was a regular Sunday school teacher until the last few years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J. A. (Jake) Niven of Raeford in January 1966.
Survivors include one son, Graham and wife Sharon and numerous nieces and grandnieces.
A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, January 5, at 2 p.m. at the Raeford United Methodist Church.

Paul Monroe Jr.

Paul Monroe Jr., 60, of 308 E. 8th Ave., died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013.
Survivors are: wWife, Hazel; daughters, Audrey Smith, Angela McClain, Lynetta Smith, LaTonya Stanley; brothers, Kenneth, Ronald; stepsisters, Eva Sullivan, Frances Johnson; five grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, December 31 at 1 p.m. in St. Joseph Miracle Revival Center. Burial will be in Mount Zion United Methodist Church cemetery in Maxton.
Viewing will be today, Monday, December 30 from noon to 8 p.m. today and the visitation will be from 6 to 8 in Crumpler Funeral Home in Red Springs.

Guillermo E. Alberto

Guillermo Enario Allberto, 70, of Raeford, died Friday, December 27, 2013.
Survivors are: wife, Abundia; daughters, Jocelyn, Elvera, Eleuterio, and Ermil; son, Eugene; and 15 grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Monday, December 30 at 2 p.m. in Cunningham & Sons Mortuary Chapel. Burial will be Cross Creek Cemetery No. 5.

Glynda L. Suggs

Glynda McLemore Suggs, 75, of Raeford, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2013.
Survivors are: husband, Dewey; sons, Michael and Donald; brother, Elvin McLemore; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Monday, December 30 at 2 p.m. in Christ Community Church in White Oak. Burial will be in Briar Branch Baptist Church cemetery.

Juanita Randol

Juanita Monette (Williams) Randol died age 81 on December 24 while residing at the Edwin Morgan Care Center Laurinburg.
She was born August 13, 1932 to Ezra and Glodia(Braden) Williams. Juanita (Aunt Nita) was a retired cook who worked at numerous nursing homes and other facilities in Illinois and North Carolina. Her greatest pleasures in life came from creating things for others. She loved cooking, crocheting, cross stitch and reading cook books. She was currently crocheting lap blankets for others at the care center. She was well known for her famous deserts that looked as beautiful as well as tasting phenomenal.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Ray, Gene and Norman, sisters Norma Jean, Geraldine (Mays), brother in law Vern Mays, daughter Brenda Sue, multiple aunts, uncles, grandparents and cousins. She is survived by her brother Jim (Shirley) Williams, sisters-in-law Ellen Williams and Margaret Williams, children Don (Catherine) Randol, Phyllis (Chuck) Fischer, Larry (Francis) Randol, Bobby Randol, Joyce (Ron) Osterholm and Randy Branche, many grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
No services will be done as this was her wish.

Larry Bratcher, 58, of 247 Radley St., died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013.
Survivors are: wife, Bessie; children, Tamika Walton, William, Sherry and Mary Blackburn, Shameka McLean, Kelton McNair and James Willis.

Margeri M. Dever

Margerie Marie (Nee Maiers) Dever, age 78 of Raeford died Sunday, December 22, 2013 at Open Arms Retirement Center.
She was born October 31, 1935 in Lorain County, Ohio. She was the devoted daughter to the late Albert Thomas Maiers and Bertha Eva (Nee Wiethoff) Maiers. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Bertha Jane Sage and her brother, Vernon Maiers.
She is survived by her daughter Jeannette Tapio and her husband Tim of Raeford; her son Daniel Dever of Lakewood, Ohio; a grandson, Christopher J. Tapio of Ft. Lewis, Washington; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family has requested no memorial service be held, but for everyone to remember Marge for the vibrant and full of life person she was.

Grant Patrick "Peanut" Miles, infant son of Josh and Sabrina Miles of Raeford, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013.
Also survived by: grandparents, Marcy, Kevin and Karen.

Martha Beatty

Martha M. Beatty, age 58, passed on Friday, December 20, 2013.
She is survived by her daughter, Daphne L. Burt of Newport News, Virginia; sons George V. Beatty, Jr. and Jeremy Beatty; sisters the Rev. Jennie Mae Allen (Bobby) and Betty Peterkin (Billy); brother Joe McGeachy (Annie) all of Raeford; and one Aunt Linda Thomas (Vertis) of Greensboro.
Family will receive family and friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Peterkin.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 28 at Matthew Rouse Resource Center, 373 Pittman Grove Church Road, Raeford.
Burial will be held at Laurel Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Raeford.

Carolyn A. Newberry

Carolyn Ann Newberry, 70, of Fayetteville, died Wednesday, December 18, 2013 in Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville.
She was born in Morrilton, Arkansas and was a career Truck Driver for J.B. Hunt Carriers. She was an avid bowler in her younger years and dearly loved the Cooking Channel.
Survivors are: sons; Chuck Bertog and his wife Angela of Lumber Bridge and Chris Bertog and his wife Brandi of Greenbrier, Arkansas; six grandchildren, Mike, Adele, Halie, Gracie, Ty and Sophie.
A memorial service will be held on Petit Jeanne Mountain in Arkansas on January 4, 2014.

Myrle M. Ray

Myrle Money Ray, of Raeford, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2013.
Survivors are: sons, Kenneth and David; daughters, Yvonne Snead and Linda Crowder; brother, Alvin Money; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The memorial service will be held Sunday, December 29 at 3 p.m. at Raeford First Baptist Church.
Visitation will be held Saturday, December 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the home of Yvonne Snead, 102 Lakeway Drive in West End.

Thomas Franklin Parker, 73, of Raeford, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013.
Survivors are: children, Dana Underwood and Todd; sisters, Sheila Brown and Barnelle Owens.
A private service will be held.

Harold C Campbell

Harold Clifford Campbell of Raeford died Friday, December 20, 2013 in Autumn Care of Raeford at the age of 75.

He was born in Horry County, SOuth Carolina on February 25, 1938 to the late Maxey Clayton Campbell and Minnie Scott Campbell. He was a member of the Raeford Evangelical Methodist Church. He was employed at Charles Craft in Laurinburg before retiring. He was an avid bowler.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia T. Campbell of Raeford; his brother, Bobby Campbell of Lillington; his sister, Ruby Roberts of Springfield, MAssachusetts; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday, December 22, 2013 at Crumpler Funeral Home-Raeford.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday, December 23, 2013at Raeford Evangelical United Methodist Church with Pastor Roger Burns officiating. Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

Eugene Lee, 83, of Shannon, died Thursday, December 12, 2013.
He was a Korean War Veteran.
Survivors are: companion, Thelma McLean; children, Anna, Lillian, Sophia, Georgian, Desiree, Sonja, Christopher, Terence, Sherman, Sterling, and Terrell.

Annie Mae Monroe, 80, of 343 Hill Street, died Sunday,December,15, 2013.
Survivors are: son, John Jr.; daughter, Shirley Story; sister, Alberta Martin; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Rita L. Lizotte

Rita LaFleur Lizotte, 92, died peacefully on Dec. 9, 2013 at the Kobacker House in Columbus, Ohio. She has been a resident of the Villages of Westerville in Ohio for the past two years. She was born in Falls River, Massachusetts. She was the eighth of 14 children. She later moved to Raeford to raise her family. She was a retired food service member of the Hoke County School District. She was a founded and devoted member of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church for more than 50 years.
She is preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Lizotte Dunlap. She is survived by her daughter Diane Clenney of Gahanna, Ohio; two sons Roger (Margaret) Lizotte Lake City, Florida and Donald (Karen) Lizotte of Wake Forest; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters Annette Berney and Loretta Levesque.
A memorial service will be held in Raeford January 18th, 2014. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to your local Hospice care in her memory.

William H. Womble

William Henry Womble, Jr., 87, of Morehead City, passed away Sunday, December 15, 2013 at Crystal Coast Hospice House.
He served aboard the USS Cates (DE-763) between August 7, 1943 and March 21, 1946 when he was honorably discharged. During his service, he earned the Asiatic-Pacific, European-African-Middle East, American Theatre and Victory Medal II Ribbons for his service.
He is survived by his wife, Odell Moore Womble of the home; three sons, William H. Womble, III and wife Jan of Greenwood, South Carolina, James R. Womble and wife Debora of Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa and Michael H. Womble and wife Amy of Eastover; two brothers, James E. Womble of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Donald L. Womble of Albuquerque, New Mexico; two sisters, Mary Frances Pridgen of Daytona Beach, Florida and Barbara Hester of Rocky Mount; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary B. Womble and father, William H. Womble.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Morehead City with the Rev. Dr. Nate Leonard and the Rev. Darrell Williams officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

Mary Ruth Calloway Haire died Sunday, December 15, 2013 at the age of 98.
She was born in Surry County on December 3, 1915 to the late Robert and Blanche Cook Calloway.
She is preceded in death by her husband Ernest B. Haire and her son, Ernest B. Haire, Jr. She was a member of Antioch Presbyterian Church and past president of Woodman of the World, Chapter 118 in Raeford.
She is survived by her son William Robert Haire of Bumpass, Virginia; three sisters, Sadie Cagle of Miami, Florida, Joan Frye of Aberdeen, and Patsy Edwards of Wilmington; two grandchildren, Nicole Law and William Haire, Jr; and two great-grandchildren, Cameron Haire and Micheal Haire.

Rosa Wilson


 Rosa Lee Wilson of Raeford, formerly of Winston Salem, died Saturday, December 14, 2013 in Autumn Care at the age of 97.

 She was born in Clarendon County, SC on September 2, 1916 to the late Joseph L. Lewis and Martha Holladay Lewis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack C. Wilson, two sons, Earl R. Wilson and Wayne O. Wilson, her brother, Joseph L. Lewis, Jr., four sisters, Mary L. Maye, Bonnie L. Finger, Elizabeth L. Chapman, Clara L. Elmore, her son-in-law, CharlesAnglin and her daughter-in-law, Joy C. Wilson. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Raeford after moving her membership from Ardmore Baptist Church in Winston Salem.

She is survived by her son, Douglas Wilson of Winston Salem; her daughter, Gerry W. Anglin of Raeford; 9 Grandchildren; 22 Great Grandchildren; 2 Great-Great Grandchildren.

Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at Raeford First Baptist Church, 333 N. Main Street, Raeford, NC 28376.

Geraldine Jones Dalton of Raeford died in her home Saturday, December 14, 2013 at the age of 72.

She was born in Hoke County on December 16, 1940 to the late David and Cleonia Bowling Jones.She was preceded in death by her husband, BillyDalton and her sister, Shelby J. Atkins. She was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church. 

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa D. Maxwell and her husband Will of Raeford; her son, William David Dalton and his wife Shelly of Fuquay Varina; three grandchildren, Melissa Maxwell, Brandon Maxwell, and Mary Grace Dalton; her sisters, Grace J. Sides and Betty J. Troutman; and her brother, David N. Jones, Jr. all of Aberdeen.

Edgar Phipps

Edgar " Jerry" Phipps, 65 of Wilmington died on Monday, December 2, 2013.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Mildred Fipps; sisters Betty Meredith and Elaine Manus; and a brother, Roger Fipps.
He was a members of Castle Hayne Baptist Church and Black River Hunting Club. He loved to hunt and fish.
Survivors are; his wife of Julie Conoly Phipps, of the home and formerly of Raeford; daughters, Connie Phipps and Ulene Latham and her husband Chris; brothers, Larry Fipps and Ricky Fipps; sisters, Judy James and Tammy King; three grandchildren; and his canine companion, Lucy.
The funeral was held December 5 at 11 a.m. In Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home in Wilmington. Interment was at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Larry McNeill

Larry McNeill, Jr., 41, of Southern Pines, died Thursday, December 5, 2013, at FirstHealth/Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
He was employed by Walmart of Aberdeen for many years.
Survivors are his mother, Linda Cromartie; his father, Larry McNeill, Sr.; his stepfather, John Cromartie; siblings, Cimeron, Rakeia, and Nyuka McNeill; four nieces, Andria, Lindsy, Talaysia and Jayden; and two nephews, Shacore and Cayden

Emanuel Edward "Ed" Galbreith, 84, of Raeford, formerly of Southern Pines, died Saturday, November 30, 2013, at FirstHealthMoore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.
He served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors are his children, Jackie Monroe (Curtis) of Southern Pines, Claudia McClain (Arnie) of Charlotte, and Susan Galbreith (Clinton) of Pinehurst; a long-time companion, Magnolia Davis of Raeford; his sister, Patricia White of Brooklyn, New York; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Erastus Z. Huggins, Jr. of Raeford died Thursday, November 28, 2013 in Autmn Care of Raeford at the age of 84.
He was born in Robeson County on October 27, 1929 to the late Erastus Z. Huggins, Sr. and Lilly Daisy Evans Huggins. He was preceded in death by his previous wife, Juanita Barnes Huggins, and his sons, Willie Ray Huggins and Henry W. Barnes. He was retired from the textile industry.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra J. Huggins of Kinston; his sons, Erastus "Pee Wee" Huggins, III (Peggy) of Raeford, Jammie Huggins of Shannon, David R. Huggins (Shelia) of Burgaw, Wilton Barnes (Shirley) of Red Springs, and Tommie Barnes of Red Springs; his daughters, Ethel Rose Barnes of Red Springs, Lois Jacobs of Shannon, Carolyn Sessoms (Eugene) of Laurinburg, and Doris Dick (Kevin) of Fort Mills, South Carolina; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Leopold Salzer III

Leopold Kenneth Salzer, III, 76, of Raeford passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2013.
He was born on May 22, 1937 in Albany, New York to Leopold and Frances Salzer. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Carolee.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Iris and his children who adored him: Leo (Debbie), Michael (Beth), Barry (Sylvia), Chris (Shanta) and Lynn. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, and his sister, Jeanne Nestler (Eddie).
As a Chief Warrant Officer, he faithfully served his country in both the Air Force ('54-'67) and the Army ('67-'77). He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
He leaves a lasting legacy of service to others within in the community. These endeavors spanned many years and include his service as a teacher and administrator for the Hoke County School system ('77-'97), the Hillcrest Water System (30 years), the Literacy Council, and various leadership committees at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church. He was a lifetime member of the National Disabled American Veterans and an active member of the local DAV Chapter 17. Countless lives have been impacted by his kindness, generosity, friendship and wisdom.

Denise Marie Thomas 47 of Raeford, died Thursday November 14, 2013 at her home.
She was born September 22, 1966 in San Diego, California to Finus Lloyd Dearmore, and Janice Wise of Fayetteville.
She is survived by her husband Micheal W. Thomas of Raeford; two sons, Randy S. Dearmore of Fayetteville and Trevor J. Thomas of Raeford; a daughter, Jaden B. Thomas of Raeford; two brothers, Randy Houshower of California and Kerry Dearmore of Los Vegas, Nevada; a sister, Mickey Koble of California; and four grandchildren.
In addition to her parents she is survived by her husband Micheal Wayne Thomas of Raeford.

Grace Pierce

Grace Marie Siraqusa Pierce of Raeford was born in Dunkirk, New York on February 5, 1926 to the late Sam M. Siraqusa and Carrie Cammarata (Privateer) Siraqusa. She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Pierce and her sons, Patrick Pierce in 1976 and Gerald Pierce in 2012, her brothers, Anthony Privateer, George Privateer, Sr., Marion Siragusa, one sister, Jennie Gugino, a niece, Louise Pelleteer, and infant nephew Anthony Privateer.
After graduating from Fredonia High School, she worked in her family owned grocery store as a clerk/butcher until her early thirties. For 15 years she was the day manager for Your Host Restaurant. She also worked as a waitress/cook for Normandy Restaurant, Vineyard Restaurant and Vineyard Golf Course. She continued to work in the culinary department of S.U.N.Y. at Fredonia until she retired due to health reasons.
She is survived by her children Janet Pierce and Bernice Miller of Raeford, Carolyn Lochbaum (Ken) of Northeast, Pennsylvnia; her daughter-in-law Kathleen Pierce of Lawrence Park, Pennsylvania; her grandchildren, Michael Killon (Kim), Kevin Killion (Robin) both of Dunkirk, New York, Renee Lockwood (John) of Randolph, New York, Virginia Kawski (Scott) of Erie, Pennsylvnia, Jill Snow (Steven) of West End, James A. Phillips and Richard D. Phillips of North Carolina, Richard Randall (Alex) of Erie, Pennsylvania, Brent Lochbaum (Jan) of Texas, Crystal Dorman of Northeast, Pennsylvania, Laura McAdoo of Ohio, Amanda Sova (Seth) of Northeast Pennsylvania, Kara Lochbaum of Northeast, Pennsylvania, Carrie Pierce of Erie, Pennsylvania, and Alexis Sova (Aaron) of Virginia; 35 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; nephews, Carl Privateer (Kay) of Fredonia, New York, George Privateer, Jr. (Kay) of Fredonia, New York and Florida, and David Siragusa of Brocton, New York.

George Albert (Al) McKeithan of Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, formerly of Raeford, died suddenly Monday, November 11, 2013 at the age of 50.
He was born in Cumberland County on February 6, 1963 to the late Reverend George McKeithan and Doris Sessoms McKeithan. He attended Hillcrest Baptist Church in Raeford. He was an avid skydiver and photographer.
He is survived by Paul (P.J.) Lela McKeithan Butler

Lela McKeithan McDowell Butler, age 94, passed away November 1, 2013 in Apex. She was born September 29, 1919 in Hoke County, daughter of Neil Archie and Sara Elizabeth (Hart) McKeithan.
She worked as a teacher before her retirement where she taught in both the Apex and Fuquay-Varina school districts. She enjoyed playing bridge and bingo, and also enjoyed doing needlework.
She is survived by her daughter Lynne Bridger; a son Donald McDowell; three grandsons Travis, Kevin, and Justin Bridger; two great-grandchildren; her sister Eunice Mottley; and brother Cecil McKeithan. She was preceded in death by her two husbands Melvin McDowell and W. Gordon Butler.

Daniel Howard Hales, formerly of Raeford and Harrisonburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully in sleep Monday night, October 21, 2013 at his home in Cocoa Beach, Florida. He is survived by his son Chance Hales of San Carlos, California; his mother Joyce and stepdad Doug Wilson, of Cocoa Beach; his dad, Danny Hales of Harrisonburg; his brother, Mark Hales of Oakbrook, Virginia; and two step-brothers, Matthew Hales of Holly Springs, and Conrad Wilson of Cocoa Beach. He leaves behind many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was passionate about the things he enjoyed in life. He thoroughly loved and cherished his "touring group" family.

Doris Virginia Barefoot Skinner, 80, of Kernersville, went home to be with her Lord October 10, 2013.

Mary Helen Senter

Mary Helen Gatlin Senter of Raeford died Monday, October 21, 2013.
She was born May 11, 1920 in Raeford. She was the daughter of Margaret Privette and Hallie Leon Gatlin, Sr.
She graduated from Raeford High School in 1937, attended Mars Hill College in 1938 and graduated from Meredith College in 1942.
In 1943, she married Neil Leonard Senter of Kipling. Except for a short time when they lived in Yuma, Arizona and while Sgt. Senter was serving in the U.S. Army during WWII, they made their home in Raeford.
She served her family, community and church in many capacities, including as a lifetime deacon in First Baptist Church of Raeford. The church named the offices and Educational Building "Gatlin Hall" to recognize her family's service through five generations.
Her twenty years of teaching first grade at McLauchlin School was a source of pride to her. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Sorority.
In 1993, the Raeford Woman's Club dedicated its yearbook to her. Hern's life was one of giving—to her church, to her family and to her community.
She leaves behind to treasure her memory, her daughter and son-in-law Mary Neil and Julian King, her son and daughter-in-law Bill and Pam Senter, four grandchildren, Jason King and his wife Patricia, Justin King, Maggie Bennington and her husband Erik, and Neil Senter and his wife Heather. In addition are six great-grandchildren, Helen, Kate, Ella, Ainsley, Garrett and Julia. "Hedy", as her family knew her, was much loved by numerous nieces and nephews. They, as all who loved her, found her to be a woman of many talents, especially making others feel loved and special.
Visitation will be at her home at 115 North Highland Street, on Wednesday, October 23.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 24 at Raeford First Baptist Church, 333 N. Main Street, with the Rev. Tom Lee and Pastor Toby Neal officiating. Burial will be in Raeford Cemetery.

Hursel Bryan (H.B.) Nixon, Jr. 83 of Raeford, died Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Firsthealth Hospice House in Pinehurst.
He was born December 23, 1929 in Hoke County to the late Hursel Bryan (Pat) Nixon and Jenny Ola Collins Nixon. He served in the North Carolina National Guard, US Army and retired from the US Navy. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shiners, The American Legion, The Legion Riders Post 109 Benson, and the Scottish Twirlers in Laurinburg.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years Betty Jean Nixon of Raeford; three daughters, Gail J. Hayes (Horace) of Raeford, Susan M. Manning (James Cook) of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Barbie M. Williams of Fountain, Colorado; a sister, Betty Lou Braverman of St. Petersburg, Florida; five grandchildren, Bryan Manning, Heath Hayes, Garrett Hayes, Daniel Williams, and Shauna Williams; and five great-grandchildren, Garren, Greyson, Hayden, Lyssa, and Kyrie.

Alan P. Scholz

Alan "Al" Paul Scholz passed away at his home in Raeford October 11, 2013 at the age of 78.
He was born in Madison, Wisconsin September 5, 1935. He moved his family to Anchorage, Alaska. After more than 20 years in Alaska they moved to North Carolina, where his wife still resides.
He was known for his love of gardening, woodworking, helping anyone in need, and never passing an opportunity at a good joke, or even a bad one to make sure to get a smile.
He was instrumental in starting the Russian Jack Community Patrol, and working closely with the Anchorage Police Department.
His passion for gardening and working with his hands, along with making people smile, came together in the last years of his life when he was employed as a maintenance engineer at the Open Arms Retirement Center in Raeford.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Dorothy Scholz, and two grandchildren, Misty Dawn Scholz and Joshua Paul Richards.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Scholz, to whom he was married nearly 60 years.
He is lovingly remembered by his seven children, Steven, Douglas (Frankie), Scott, Doreen (Frank), Lori, Lana (Shawn), Elizabeth (Andy), 29 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.

Apryle Rossi, age 55, of Seagrove and formerly of Hoke County, died Saturday (October 12, 2013) at her home.
She is survived by her husband of 22 years, Christopher Rossi; a daughter Mary Michal McNeil and husband Patrick stationed in Tokyo, Japan; brothers Mark Reese and wife Laurie of California, Burt Reese and wife Sylvia of Rockfish; sisters Hope Ribar and husband Frank of Rockfish, and Laural Reese of Rockfish; mother and stepfather Martha and Danny Brock of Sneads Ferry; and grandchildren Andrew and Matthew.

Herbert L. Thaggard

Herbert LeRoy(Sonny) Thaggard Jr., 81 of Raeford, died Octoober 10, 2013 at Moore Regional Hospital.
He graduated from Fayetteville High School and entered the US Navy. He served on the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany until his honorable discharge. He served the US Postal Service for 32 years retiring as the SPO from the Raeford Post Office in 1987. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Fayetteville.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Katherine Broadhurst Thaggard; father, Herbert Leroy Thaggard, Sr.; son, Paul Jeffery Thaggard; sister Joyce Staton; brother, Gary McNeill Thaggard; and a grandson, Joshua Caleb Chavis.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Margaret(Maggie) Thaggard; son, Tracy B. Thaggard and his wife Toni of Raeford; daughers, Deborah Canupp and her husband Ed of Apex, Kimberly Chavis and her husband Larry of Knightdale, Jeanie Abner and her husband Danny of Stedman; sister, Betty Korpella of Maryville, Tennessess; three step-children, Jeanne Autry and her husband Ronnie of Dunn, Bill Cifers and is wife Karen of Elizabethton, Tennessee, and Patti Collins and her husband Arthur of Falcon; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and five step-great-granchildren; sister-in-law, Sarah Lynn Thaggard and Joy T. Smith, the mother of his five children and his little Maltese companion, Le'Roi.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 19 at 2 p.m. in First Baptist Church in Raeford with the Rev. Toby Neal officiating. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 1: 45 p.m. A private burial will follow.

Mary E. Cortright

Mary Ellen Cortright, age 74, died Monday, October 7, 2013 at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst.
She was born in Buffalo, New York to Floyd L. Robinson and Margaret Pierce Robinson on March 6, 1939. She was a graduate of Buffalo State University. She was a member of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church and served as a volunteer for St. Joseph of the Pines and FirstHealth in the pastoral care department.
She is survived by her husband, William L. Cortright of the home; sons, William T. Cortright and his wife Melissa of Garner, Robert John Cortright of Kingsburg, New Jersey; a daughter, Cheryl Pope and her husband Benjamin of Willow Springs; and a granddaughter, Beth Pope.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday October 11 at Boles Funeral Home of Southern Pines.

Robert C. McLean

Robert C. McLean, son of the late Walter Herbert McLean and Ella Lide McLean, was born on June 16, 1938 in Hoke County North Carolina.
On Saturday October 5, 2013 at 4:20 p.m. at Autumn Care Nursing Home in Raeford he departed this earthly life and received his crown of righteousness.
He received his early education at Upchurch Elementary in Raeford and Peterson School in Red Springs.
At a young age he attended Center Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Red Springs and later joined the New Christian Memorial Church in Baltimore, Maryland. Upon relocation to North Carolina he joined Nazareth Missionary Baptist Church in Wagram.
He was preceded in death by his father Walter H. McLean, his mother Ella Lide McLean, two sisters, Rosa Parker and Arlethia Bullock, and two brothers, Bobby McLean and J.B. McLean.
He is survived by a brother, John H. McLean of Baltimore, Maryland (Van); two sisters, Lula Mae Ferguson of Newark, New Jersey and Margaret Ellis (Deacon Frank Ellis) of Raeford; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
Visitation will be 1-7 p.m. Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at Crumpler Funeral Home-Red Springs.

Raymond B. Ellis

Raymond Basil Ellis of Aberdeen, formerly of Raeford, passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2013. He was born August 23, 1932 to Henry Wallace Ellis and Katherine Mildred Martin Ellis. He was preceded in death by his son, Barry Dwight Ellis of Atlanta, Georgia. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, the Rev. Wallace Martin Ellis and Leonard Ralph Ellis; and his sister, Vivian Ellis Dull.
He was an avid collector of all types of old tools, coins, and glassware. He especially enjoyed flea markets and yard sales. For many years he and his wife toured the five-state yard sale. He cherished his time with his grandchildren, telling stories and showing off his collectible treasures.
He was a commercial builder for more than 40 years with D. R. Allen Construction Co. and Ellis-Walker Construction Co. of Fayetteville. Some of his proudest accomplishments included the home in Fayetteville that he built for his employer, Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Allen. He also built the two homes in Raeford for his family. During his career he was very proud of the many churches and commercial projects that he built in the Fayetteville area and all over the surrounding states.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Connie Fulk Ellis of Aberdeen; sons Stephen Ellis of Aberdeen, Bruce Ellis and wife, Ja'Nae of Carthage, Dennis Ellis and wife, Diane of Raleigh; daughters Glynda Ellis Mealer and husband, Vaughn of Rolesville, Rhonda Ellis Faucette and husband, Tommy of Clayton; 11 grandchildren, Diana Ellis Dobbs, Kristen Ellis, Margie Hicks, Kevin Ellis, Brittanie Faucette, Brandon Faucette, Meagan Swayne, Alexis Weatherby, Jacob Ellis, Anthony Raymond Mealer, and Abby Mealer; and seven great-grandchildren, Alexis Dobbs, Hailey Dobbs, Justin Dobbs, Jr., Nathan Raymond Dobbs, Matthew Williams, Hannah Williams and Autumn Williams.
The funeral was conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 6 at Raeford United Methodist Church. A graveside entombment service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 10 at Raeford Cemetery where family and friends are welcome.

James Earl Jones

James Earl Jones, died Thursday, December 6, 2012 in Brentwood, Tennessee surrounded by his family.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Carol; sons, Christopher Neal Jones, of Nashville, Tennessee, and Michael Reed Jones and his wife Kristine of Pasadena, California; daughters, Kelly Anne Jones of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Kimberly Lynn Jones of Brentwood; a granddaughter, Elena Arevik Jones; brothers, Whiteford Jones and wife Bettie of Raeford, and William Jones of Lumber Bridge; sister. Catherine McNeill of Anticoh; sister-in-law. Barbara Jones, of raeford; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 19 at 2 p.m. in Sandy Grove UMC with the Rev. Judson Dunlap. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the church.

Gladys Moultrie

Mother Gladys Moultrie died in late September. She was born on October 7, 1935 to the late Israel and Pecola Moultrie. She was preceded in death also by her two sisters, Hertesene Purcell and Anna Dora Moultrie.
She received her education from the Hoke County School System. She graduated from Upchurch High School. She moved to New York and worked in the nursing field for over 30 years.
She joined Tabernacle of Prayer for All People Inc. of Jamaica, New York under the pastorate of the late Apostle Johnnie Washington. Graduating in 1997 from the Tabernacle Bible Institute in New York, she received a double masters from United Christian College. In 1999 she received a doctorate of theology degree from the United Christian College of Sacred Theology. In 2001 she became an ordained minister with the Christian Council on Education, Inc., in the State of New Jersey.
In 2002, after many years of living in New York, she returned home to Raeford. She rejoined St. James United Church of God under the leadership Overseer Willie Purcell, Jr. where she remained faithful until her health failed and she had to return to New York.
Cherished memories are left for her four children, Armden Moultrie (Barbara) of Bossier City, Louisiana, Bridget Hopkins of Brentwood, New York, Trina Leslie (Vincent) of Hartford, Connecticut, and Grover Moultrie of Brentwood, New York; six grandchildren, Rasheda Hood (Raffiel), Cassandra Hopkins, Vinetta Leslie, Olivia Leslie, and Viviana Leslie and Triamaine Robinson (Lamar); and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren, and a special daughter, Debora Purcell.
The funeral was held September 22 at 2 p.m. at St. James United Church of God. Burial was in Highland Biblical Gardens.

Wilson McEachin, 64, of Walter Gibson Road, died Sunday, September 29, 2013.

Hannah McMillan Lee of Raeford, age 87, died Wednesday October 2,2013 at Autumn Care of Raeford.
She was born April 24 ,1926 in Hoke County, to the late N.A. McMillan and Minnie Stubbs McMillan. She was preceded in death by her husband Jesse Lee.
She was a member of the Raeford United Methodist Church. She retired from Burlington Industries in Raeford.

Lisa Faye Baker 52 of Raeford died October 1, 2013 at UNC Chapel Hill.
She was born in Cumberland County on October 21, 1960.

Elma P. Williams

Elma Porter Williams, age 92, of Calabash, South Carolina, formerly of Raeford, slipped away peacefully from her earthly home to her heavenly home on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 following an extended illness. She was born on July 17, 1921 in Loris, South Carolina to the late William Edward Porter and the late Olia Moore Cannon Porter. "Mrs. Elma" loved God, her family, singing, cooking, gardening and she had a delightful sense of humor. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, a member of First Baptist Church of Shallotte, and will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was born in Tazewell County, Virginia on July 28, 1951 to the late Fritz Lee Murray and Thelma Burton Murray. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Bullard.

Muriel Gourley

On September 28, 2013, Muriel Edna (Ford) Gourley passed into the joy of the Lord at four o'clock in the afternoon after a long illness at Devereux House in Marblehead, Massachusetts. She was a former resident of Rockfish and beloved wife of the late Earl Douglas Gourley.
She was born on October 4, 1926, in Windsor, Canada. She leaves two children: Patricia Anne (Gourley) Thornton and husband David of Swampscott, Massachusetts and Douglas William Gourley of Clinton Township, Michigan. She also leaves three grandchildren: Robert Douglas Bieda and his wife Tracey, Heather Anne Thornton and Nancy Gourley. She was blessed with four great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren and her beloved dog, Hans.

Janet Lillian Hanzak of Raeford died Monday, September 23, 2013 at the age of 80.
She was born June 9, 1933 in Lake County, Ohio to the late William and Ruth Bittner Mackey.
She was a long time member of Living Stones Christian Church in Alvin, Texas.
She is survived by three daughters Jodi Davis of Raeford, Jana Siegle of Canyon Lake, Texas, and Jill Goldstein of Parker, Colorado; a brother Bruce Mackey of Fredricksburg, Virginia; a sister Bonnie Lakso of Huntington, Pennsylvania; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

David Lee Green, 59, of 198 Autry Loop, Raeford, died Sep. 9, 2013.
He was the son of the late Benjamin and Ophelia Green. He graduated from Hoke High School and later joined the National Guard. He was a member of Freedom AME Zion Church in Raeford.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Pearl Brown; and three brothers, Benjamin Franklin Green Jr., Joseph Allen Green, and Bobby Lewis Green.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Green of the home; a son, Alexander Ray of Raeford; a stepson, Kelvin McLean of Raeford; four sisters, Ellen Williams of Pinehurst, Shirley Scott of Fayetteville, and Dorothy Melvin (James) and Cynthia Green, both of Raeford; a brother, Dwight Green (Annie) of Raeford; an aunt, Francis Hamilton of Brooklyn, New York; two grandchildren, Emmanuel and Shiada Ray of Raeford; his mother-in-law, Ruth McLean; six sisters-in-law, Linda Campbell (Joseph), Marger McNair (Sam), Wanda Alury (William), Karen McLean and Geraldine Cobb, all of Raeford, and Deal Green of Fayetteville; and a brother-in-law, Archie McLean (Eunice) of Raeford.

Charlotta C. King

Charlotta Coward King, 80, of Raeford, died peacefully following an extended illness, surrounded by loving family members on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at St. Joseph of the Pines in Southern Pines. She was born in Florence, South Carolina on September 4, 1933 to the late Barnwell Edwin and Pauline Stackley Coward. She graduated from McClenaghan High School in June 1951 and attended Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
She felt fortunate to have lived and raised her children in Clarksville, Virginia and Raeford, North Carolina. She was a homemaker and active in Raeford. As a member of Raeford United Methodist Church since 1972, she served as a Sunday School teacher in the Koinonia Women's class for many years as well as a Circle leader through United Methodist Women. She also was a member of the Raeford Woman's Club and served on both Hoke County and Sandhill Regional Library boards. She waged a battle against breast cancer in 1971 and through God's grace won.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 59 years, George McCown King; their two daughters, Polly King Jordan and husband, John of Raeford; Charlotta King Howell and husband, David, a Raeford native, of Clarksville, Virginia; their son, George McCown King, Jr. and wife, Roxanne of Spartanburg, South Carolina; and granddaughter, Elizabeth McCown King of Atlanta, Georgia. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Janet Crowe Coward of Concord; niece, Catherine Coward Niebauer and husband, Randy of High Point and their two children, Emma Carlisle and Ren. She was preceded in deaht by her brother, Barnwell Edwin Coward, Jr. of Concord.
The funeral will be officiated graveside by Dr. Steve Castle and Dr. Homer C. Phifer at Raeford Cemetery on E. Central Avenue at 11 A.M. on Tuesday, September 24, 2013. Wayne Lester Crowder, 86, of Butler, Tennessee, died Sunday, September 15, 2013 in his home.
He was born on March 22, 1927 to the late Manley and Ella Warren Crowder. In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by a son, Robert Eugene Crowder; sisters: Trilla Norris, Pauline Greear, Opal Pardue, and Dorothy Pardue; brothers: Clyde Crowder, Otis Crowder, Orville Crowder, Delmar Crowder and Harold Crowder; grandson, Jason Pierce and son-in-law, Gary Laws.
He retired from Burlington Industries. He was a United States Army Veteran.
Survivors are: wife, Betty Butler Crowder; daughters, Helen Osborne of Mountain City, TN, Kathy Pierce and her husband Johnny Ray and Wanda Laws, all of Butler, TN; sons, Larry Crowder and his wife Sandra of Raeford and Johnny Crowder and his wife Toni of Butler, TN; daughter-in-law, Debbie Crowder of Raeford; sister: Mamie Adams, of Mountain City, TN; brothers, Earl Crowder and Jim Crowder, both of Mountain City, TN; twelve grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and his church family.
The funeral was held Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 8 p.m. in Dyson Grove Baptist Church in Tennessee with Pastor Leonard Fletcher and Brother Dean Fletcher officiating.

Laura Schlotman-Clayton

Laura Schlotman-Clayton, age 58, of Raeford, unexpectedly passed away on September 14, 2013.
She was a dedicated mother and wife and is survived by her husband Patrick Clayton; her son Nicholas Clayton; and her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Megan Clayton. She is also survived by her mother Polly Schlotman and her brother John and his wife Lesley Schlotman. She was preceded in death by her father, John Julien Schlotman.
She was born on July 19, 1955 in Marietta Georgia, attended the McEachern School and graduated from Marietta High School. She married Patrick on May 8, 1982. Since that time she and her family lived in California, Kentucky, Germany, Virginia, England, Texas and most recently Raeford.
A memorial service will be held September 28, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, 189 Church Street, Marietta GA 30060.

Margaret A. Townsend

Margaret Allyne "Rusty" Townsend, 86, who grew up in Bowmore, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2013 at Southeastern General Hospital.
Born in Rockingham, N.C., she grew up in Bowmore in Hoke County, daughter of the late Lucy Wilkes Smith and John Louis Smith. She graduated from Louisburg College and went to work in Raleigh, along with her older sister Elaine. The two met and fell in love with two Rowland boys, David "Doodle" Townsend and Pete Burns. The sisters were married in a joint service in Raleigh in 1950.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her younger brother, Eugene Smith of Havelock.
She is survived by her three children, Lolita Townsend Huckaby Watson of Beaufort, Margaret A.T. Hutto (Ronnie) of Georgetown and David Townsend III (Missy) of Rowland; two grandsons, William David Black (and Danielle) of Georgetown and Charlie Watson of New Orleans; her sister, Elaine Burns of Atlanta; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Smith of Bear Grass; a niece, Lucy Burns Cusick of Atlanta; and Hal Burns of Edenton, Johnny Burns of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and Paden Smith of Atlanta.
Services were Monday at 2 p.m. at Rowland Presbyterian Church with Pastor Charles Monroe officiating. Burial followed in Asbury Memorial Cemetery, Raynham.
Services were coordinated by Boles Funeral Home, Rowland. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Rowland Presbyterian Church, P.O.Box 88, Rowland, NC 28383

Julia I. Barnwell

Julia Isabel Barnwell of Clayton, 58, died on Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at 7:37 p.m. at her home.
She was born in Augusta, Georgia to the late Benjamin S. and Martha Louise Rich Barnwell, Sr.
She retired from the State of North Carolina having worked in the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for 30 years. She was an Episcopalian.
Family and tradition was very important to her. She loved each family member in a special way.
She is survived by her two brothers, Benjamin Smith Barnwell and his wife Linda Gentry Barnwell of Greensboro, and William Lewis Barnwell and his wife Linda Millonzi Barnwell of Fayetteville. She had three nieces, Sarah Louise Barnwell, Hannah Elizabeth Barnwell, and Bella Maria Bennett. Julia will be missed by her family and friends whose lives she touched.
A graveside service will be held Sunday, September 15, 2013 at the Melrose Cemetery in Abbeville, South Carolina with the Rev. Nicholas Beasley officiating.

Tammie Cline
Tammie Cline of Newton went to be with her Lord Monday, September 9, 2013 at the age of 30.
She was born in Florida on October 18, 1982. She was a member of the Oxford Baptist Church in Conover, where she served in the choir and drama ministry. She received her nursing degree from Gardner-Webb University in 2003. After receiving her degree, she met Christopher and they married on December 20, 2003. She was a loving and devoted wife and Christian.
Survivors include her husband, Christopher B. Cline of Newton; her mother, Sandra Kay Perry of Florida; her father, John Chapman (Darlene) of Newton; her brother, Charlie "Bubba" Phillips Jr. (Joy) of Florida; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Phyllis and Dane Cline of Hickory; her brothers-in-law, Kevin Cline (Teresa) of Bethlehem, Jeffrey Cline (Holli) of Hickory, and Spencer Cline of Hickory; and several nieces and nephews.

Brenda Sue Brewer Thompson of Shannon died Friday September 6, 2013 at UNC Hospital Chapel Hill.
She was born April 23, 1959 in Scotland County. She is preceded in death by her mother Ruth Helen Brewer, her son Donnie Wayne Smith and her brother Charles Alexander Brewer. She was a member of the Hoke County Wagon Train for more than 25 years. She was employed with Hoke County as a bus driver for the handicapped. She was a long time dedicated member of Hoke County Parks and Recreation.
She is survived by her husband Jackie Thompson of Shannon; two sons, Lonnie Smith and Ronnie Smith (Shawnta) of Lumber, Bridge; three daughters, Blanche Smith of Lumber Bridge, Diana Walker (Brandon L.) of Shannon, and Laurie Jones (Ray) of Raeford; two brothers, Robert Brewer (Mary) of Norfolk, Virginia and Ronnie Brewer (Jeannete) of Baltimore, Maryland; two sisters, Kitty Bell ( Rev.Tim) of Lumberton, and Laura Robin (Tom) of Hope Mills; 13 grandchildren, Jeremiah, Brandon, Brian, Cody, Malachi, Logan, Damien, Destiny, Shanelle, Brandon, Marcus, Tony, and Nicholas; an aunt, Catherine Oldham; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Derrick Maurice Morrisey

Derrick Maurice Morrisey departed this life on Friday, August 30, 2013.
Also known as "De-Man," he was born to Cathy G. Bethea and Malcolm Gillespie in Moore County, North Carolina on July 4, 1976.
In his early years, he was raised by his grandparents, the late Eldred Blue, Sr. and Rosa Lee Blue.
He was educated in Hoke County schools, where he graduated from Hoke High School in 1995. He was a true "Buck" of Hoke, and loved baseball and football, and played during his high school years. His favorite NFL team was the Washington Redskins, and the Philadelphia Eagles were a close runner up.
He worked as a barber. He would get great joy using his hands to empower young men, by making them feel good about themselves.
He is survived by and leaves to cherish his memories a daughter, MarDerreya Morrisey of Fayetteville; his parents, Cathy Bethea (Dennis) of Raeford, and Malcolm Gillespie of Raeford; sisters, Jacara Gillespie, Sheena Gillespie, and Shauna McGougan all of Raeford; his grandmother, Marilyn Maynor of Raeford; a great-great aunt, Ruth Patterson of Raeford; five great aunts, four great uncles, six aunts, six uncles, his God-mother Cheryl Cunningham, and a very special friend Taura Dixon, along with a host of cousins, family and friends.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at J.W. Turlington School, 116 W. Prospect Avenue, Raeford, North Carolina. Burial will follow at Hoke County Community Cemetery, Raeford.

She was born July 9, 1964 in Newport News, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her father Robert Edward Baber. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Raeford. She was a loving and caring wife.
She is survived by her husband Ralph L. Mangrum of Raeford; a son, Michael Paul Mangrum; a daughter, Jessica Leigh Mangrum; her mother Laura Beverly Chaney; four brothers, Robert E. Baber,Jr, Tony Baber, Keith Chaney, and Kevin Chaney, all of Virginia; two sisters, Carla Sulivan, and Renee Chaney of Virginia; and four grandchildren.
A private service will be held later.
