Leopold Kenneth Salzer, III, 76, of Raeford passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2013.
He was born on May 22, 1937 in Albany, New York to Leopold and Frances Salzer. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Carolee.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Iris and his children who adored him: Leo (Debbie), Michael (Beth), Barry (Sylvia), Chris (Shanta) and Lynn. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, and his sister, Jeanne Nestler (Eddie).
As a Chief Warrant Officer, he faithfully served his country in both the Air Force ('54-'67) and the Army ('67-'77). He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
He leaves a lasting legacy of service to others within in the community. These endeavors spanned many years and include his service as a teacher and administrator for the Hoke County School system ('77-'97), the Hillcrest Water System (30 years), the Literacy Council, and various leadership committees at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church. He was a lifetime member of the National Disabled American Veterans and an active member of the local DAV Chapter 17. Countless lives have been impacted by his kindness, generosity, friendship and wisdom.
Family will receive guests at the Salzer residence Friday through Sunday. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Monday, December 2, 2013 at Crumpler Funeral Home-Raeford. Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church, 6199 Fayetteville Road, Raeford.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Children's Developmental Center, 305 Wooley Street, Raeford, NC 28376; and/or St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church, 6199 Fayetteville Road, Raeford, NC 28376.
