Mary L. Lawhon
Mary Lewis Lawhon of 25 Jefferson Davis Court, Martinsville, Virginia, died Friday, August 10 at her home. She was born on September 19, 1923 to the late Robert Banks Lewis and the late Maude Upchurch Lewis in Raeford.
She graduated from Salem College in Winston-Salem and performed graduate work at NC State University. She taught elementary and high school in Cumberland County, and during World War II taught elementary school on the island of Trinidad, where her father was commander of troops in training for future deployment.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served in many capacities, including deacon and elder. She served her community on the board of trustees of the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County, and the board of governors of Chatmoss Country Club. She volunteered at Memorial Hospital, and enjoyed her associations with the Garden Study Club and Book Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Watson Lawhon. She is survived by son Richard Upchurch Lawhon and wife Donna; granddaughters Andrea Lewis Lawhon Murray and husband Dan Murray, Tracey Marie Lawhon, and Mary Catherine Lawhon; son Robert Stirling Lawhon; and granddaughter Juliana Louise Lawhon.
A graveside service was held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, August 12 at Raeford Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Braden officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church in Martinsville, Virginia or to the charity of one's choice.
