Catharin John McConnaughey Brown laid aside her earthly dwelling and went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 24, 2015, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
Born Dec. 17, 1917, to William Erwin and Nancy "Nannie" Buie McConnaughey of Red Springs, she was a tireless servant of Christ who worked her entire life to help others. She was a selfless, giving and strong woman and thought only of others, even at the end of her life. She was a member of Raeford United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women.
She worked for Hoke County Social Services for many years and was the driving force behind founding the Children's Developmental Center in Raeford. She loved visiting her many dear friends and baking her famous pound cakes for them, and spent countless summer afternoons shucking corn and shelling beans on the back porch with her granddaughter. Most of all, she loved her family, who will deeply miss her and are forever grateful to her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Clarence "Doc" Brown; and her brother, William "Buster" Erwin McConnaughey III.
Survivors are: son, William Clarence "Bill" Brown and his wife, Kathy; daughter, Anna Catharin Brown; granddaughter, Catharin Lawrence Shepard; granddaughter, Lisa Carrow and her husband, Rodney (CW04); great-grandchildren, Justin and Alyssa Carrow; nephews, Hubert Wooten, Dr. Wayne Wooten, Walter Brown and his wife, Patty, George Brown and his wife, Annette, and Roland Brown; sister-in-law, Betty Woerner; dear friend, Joanne Cameron Reid; and many other family and friends.
