Shirley Truesdale Gibson, 81, died on Sunday, September 3, 2017.
She was born in Lawton, Oklahoma on July 14, 1936 to Brooks and Velma Truesdale. She married her beloved husband Robert "Bobby" Gibson in 1955, and they moved to Bobby's home state of North Carolina where they ran Gibson Farms of Hoke County and were active members of Antioch Presbyterian Church. She was a dedicated educator and worked at Hoke County Schools for many years, serving on the Board of Education as chairman. She carried this love and leadership over into her daily life, where she was a devoted mother to two children and grandmother of three. She was widely known for her wit, her grit, and her unfailingly kind heart.
She will be especially missed not only by her family, but her friends at the Raeford Garden Club and at Scotia Village, where she volunteered.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband Bobby Gibson, her parents, and by her sisters Pat Meyers and Gerri Landrum and brother Gene Truesdale. She is survived by her children Andrew "Andy" Gibson of Antioch (and his wife Tracy); daughter Julia "Juli" Gibson Spring of Durham (and her husband Keith); brother Jim Truesdale of Houston, Texas; sister-in-law Melba Autry Gibson of Raeford; granddaughter Victoria Spring of State College, Pennsylvania; granddaughter Ashlyn Spring of Urbana, Illinois; and granddaughter Christine Byrd of Antioch.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 9 at 1 p.m. at Antioch Presbyterian Church with a visitation immediately following in the Education Building. Family will attend burial at Raeford Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are provided by Crumpler Funeral Home of Raeford. In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful of a memorial contribution made in Shirley's name to Antioch Presbyterian Church at 6583 Red Springs Rd., Red Springs, N.C. 28377or to the charity of your choice.
