James D. Parks

James David Parks of Raeford, died Sunday, April 3, 2016 in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, at the age of 75.

He was born July 31, 1940 in Hoke County to the late Robert and Wilda Parks. He is preceded in death by two brothers, Billy and Allen Parks.

He is survived by his son, David Shane Parks of Monroe; his daughter, Sylvia Lowery of Wagram; two sisters, Nan Worrell of Star, and Carol Beaman of Mt. Gilead; 3 brothers, Robert Parks of Raeford, Gene Parks of Laurel Hill, and Edwin Parks of Raeford; and five grandchildren. 

A memorial graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2016 at Shiloh Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Phil Pearce officiating.

Callie Bell Love Buie

Callie Bell Love Buie, 103, died April 7, 2016 at her home.
She was born Dec. 11, 1012 to the late Emmanuel and Hattie Love in Hoke County. She was married to the late Willie Edward Buie Sr. and was blessed with five children. Three preceded her in death: Willie Edward Buie Jr., Silas Love Sr. and John Henry Love. Also preceding her in death were three sisters, Bertha, Hattie and Mattie; and two brothers, Daniel and Leonard Love.
She joined Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. Later she joined Silver Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she served as a member of Nurse's Aide Ministry until her health failed. She was a member of the Golden Link Chapter #67 Order of the Eastern Star, P.H.A. She was known for cooking for her church and the Hoke Reading and Literacy Council.
Surviving are a daughter, Maggie B. Gilbert of the home; a son, Manie Buie (Betty); four daughters-in-law; 18 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; and 66 great-great-grandchildren.

Tykawnan Tyrone McPhatter

Tykawnan Tyrone McPhatter, 27, died April 12 in an auto accident.
He is survived by his mother Janie McPhatter; sisters Koesha Ingram and Syreela McDougald; brothers Antwan Tyrone McPhatter, Tyrone McPhatter Jr., Desmond Crosby, Larry Chandler and Carlos Chandler; two aunts; and two uncles.
A memorial will be held in Buie chapel Saturday, April 16 from 1-7 p.m.
The funeral will be held Sunday, April 17 at 3 p.m. in Turlington School Auditorium. Burial will be in McLaughlin Chapel cemetery on Doc Brown Road in Raeford.

Ryan Lee Khan


Ryan Lee Khan, infant child of Andrew and Krissy Khan, died March 30, 2016.
In addition to her parents she is survived by her big sister Kara Mae of the home; her maternal grandparents Richard and Dana Tolston of Raeford; great-grandmother Jo Tolston of Fayetteville; great-grandparents Sally and Ronnie Reames of Tennessee; great-grandparents Daniel and Rosann Canady of Columbia, South Carolina; great-great grandfather Robert Nuss of Florida; uncle Richard "P-nut" Tolston III of Raeford; aunt and uncle Kim and AJ Szadek of Oxford; and grandmother Sandra Ells of Raeford. She is also survived by her paternal grandparents, Michael George of Raeford, Marisol George of Fayetteville, Michelle Khan of Lumberton and Ozzy Khan of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; great-grandparents, Azim and Safiah Khan of Fort Lauderdale; uncle, Bryan Khan of Ohio; and uncles, Mason and Dylan George of Raeford. She is preceded in death by her maternal great-grandfather Richard Tolston, who is now holding her in heaven.
A memorial service was held April 10, 2016 at Refuge Church in Fayetteville.

Herbert Lee Roper

Herbert Lee Roper, 65, of 309 Stephens Street, Raeford passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 in Pinehurst.
He was employed with Burlington Industries and the Town of Aberdeen for a number of years.
He is survived by his lifelong friend, Lib McCrimmon of Aberdeen; two daughters, Shekeeta (Brady) and Katrina McCrimmon, both of Aberdeen; five grandchildren, Savion, James and Cyndee Roper and Savannah and Keiosha McCrimmon; one brother, David Roper; seven sisters, Carolyn, Doris, Jennie Belle (Roy), Francis (Frank) Roper and Bessis Harris, all of Raeford; and Mary (Cat) Davis and Ruth Armstrong of Jersey City, New Jersey.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 11 at Jones and Little Funeral Home, 200 Benjamin Street, Aberdeen with Elderess Mary Baldwin of Mt. Lebanon Church of God officiating. A Family Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at Buffalo springs Cemetery in Raeford.

Samuel Rockholt

Samuel Rockholt, 56, of Little Rock, Arkansas, passed away on April 6, 2016. 
He was born on December 30, 1959, in Hoke County to the late Craig Wesley Rockholt Jr. and Mamie Frances Hendrix Rockholt. He is survived by his sons, Robert Wesley Rockholt and Casey Paul Rockholt. A third son, Travis Rockholt, preceded him in death. Other survivors include a sister, Wanda Sims and her husband Jim of Jacksonville, Arkansas; and four brothers, Joe Rockholt and his wife Pilar of of Raeford, Mack Rockholt and his wife Rhonda of Biloxi, Mississippi, Jim Rockholt and his wife Dana of Collinsville, Oklahoma, and George Rockholt and his wife Linda also of Raeford. Another brother, John Rockholt, preceded him in death. 
A memorial service will be held April 16 at 4 p.m. at Canvas Community Church in Little Rock.

Linwood Hayes

Linwood Hayes, 68, of St. Pauls died Tuesday April 5, 2016. Born October 18, 1947 in Red Springs to the late James Woodrow and Ethel Freeman Hayes, he was raised in Hoke County. He received an agricultural degree from North Carolina State University and spent his early years in farming. Once retired he became the owner and master greeter at Tarpackers Restaurant in St. Pauls. An avid golfer, he was also a proud Poppy. He is survived by his wife, Sara B. Hayes; daughter, Dr. Jana Watts and her husband Terrence Greene; granddaughter, Gabriela; brother, David Hayes and his wife Patricia; and sister, Linda Melton.  

A graveside Celebration of Life Service will be held Sunday April 10, 2016 at 3 p.m. in Raeford Cemetery with the Rev. Pat Hash officiating.

Edward "Moose" Duke

Edward R. (Moose) Duke, 64, passed away on April 4, 2016, following a brief illness at the Goldston home of his daughter Kristy Duke Sloan and her husband Brian Sloan. 
He was a welding instructor at Hoke High School for 13 years. He will be remembered by family and friends as a lover of opossums and someone with a story to tell.  He could make you laugh or cry and you never knew if the story being told was a truth or a lie.
He was preceded in death by his parents Edward Milton Duke and Mary Alice McDuffie Heath. In addition to the Sloans, he is survived by his granddaughter Riley Maynor, his stepmother Peggy Sears Duke and half-brother John Edward Duke (both of Apex), his half-sister Jodie Duke Denson (of Fuquay Varina) and Ellie Gossett (of Wake Forest) his half-sister.
A graveside funeral will be held at the Bynum United Methodist Church Cemetery in Pittsboro at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be to  Noah's Landing, Coats, N.C.  Online condolences can be  made at www.edmooseduke.com .

Bruce Locklear

Bruce Locklear of Red Springs died Thursday, March 31, 2016 at the age of 60.

He was born October 31, 1955 in Scotland County to the late Curtis Roger Locklear and Mildred Locklear.

He is preceded in death by his two brothers Stevenson Locklear and Charles Locklear. He retired from Kelly Springfield.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie Locklear; a son Landon Locklear (Tammy); a daughter, Shawana L. Goins (Nakema); three grandchildren, Jada Locklear, Tyler Locklear, Adalyn Goins all of Red Springs; and three brothers, Steward Locklear (Lori Ann) of Maxton, Jimmy Locklear(Ann) of Maxton, and James Michael Locklear ( Arlene) of Maxton.

The funeral was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 3, 2016 at Hoke County Holiness Church, with the Rev. Gene Truman Chavis officiating.

Interment was in the Hoke County Holiness Church Cemetery in Red Springs.
