Johnsie L. Foster

Johnsie Linthicum Foster, of Raeford, passed away on Saturday, November 10, 2018 in her home at the age of 77.
She was born in Moore County on May 14, 1941, to the late John and Nannie Linthicum. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred L. Foster, her brothers, John Linthicum Jr, Ed Linthicum, Billy Joe Linthicum, Lester Linthicum and her sisters, Dorothy Garfield, Thelma Williams, Dixie Freeman. She attended Raeford Church of God Prophecy. She graduated from Hoke County High School in 1959. She was employed with the A & P in Raeford and retired from Bobby Britt's Food Stop in 2006.  
She is survived by her daughters, Leslie F. Hinson (Brian) of Raeford, Stacey F. King (Cary) of Raleigh, and Laura F. Rouse (Brandon) of Chesapeake, VA; five grandchildren, Dolan Hinson, Ethan King, Sara King, Jonathan Rouse and Emily Rouse; and a sister, Jean Jones (Bobby) of Charlotte. 

Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 pm Monday, November 12, 2018 at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Avenue, Raeford, NC, and at other times at the home of Johnsie.
A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 11:00 am at the Church of God of Prophecy, 911 West Prospect Avenue, Raeford, NC with Pastor Charles Welch officiating.

Lois Locklear

Lois Locklear, 103, of Raeford, passed away on November 4, 2018 at Autumn Care in Raeford.

She was born on August 17, 1915 in Robeson County to Elisha and Esther Dial.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, the Rev. Claudie, Roy, Henry, Cliff and Clarence Dial, and two sisters, Helen Locklear and Lizzie Dial.

She is survived by two children, Plummer Locklear Jr. of Raeford and Mildred Placa Thorud of Pinebluff; one sister, Margaret Chavis; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 from 2-3 p.m. at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines with a service at 3 p.m.  Entombment will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Sylvia K. Wilburn

Sylvia Kay Wilburn, 65, of Aberdeen passed away on November 1, 2018.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Millard Wilburn, mother, Estelle Wilkerson Rowland, and father, Creston Henry Rowland Jr.

Sylvia is survived by her daughters, Tammy Jackson and husband Steven of Raeford, and Susan Comstock and husband Joseph of Southern Pines; and grandchildren, Cody Jackson, Tanner Jackson, and Lauren Comstock.

There will be a memorial visitation on Saturday, November 10, 2018 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at Ashley Heights Baptist Church, 10351 Aberdeen Road, Aberdeen, NC.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ashley Heights Baptist Church.

Lena J. Altman

Lena Johnson Altman of Raeford died October 25, 2018 at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield.
She raised her three children, many times alone as her husband fulfilled his obligation to our country. Following moves to Germany, Georgia and Oklahoma, the Altman family settled in Raeford, which became their forever home. She was very proud of her home and her impeccable taste in decorating. Her cooking skills and meal preparation were always a joy to her and she loved entertaining. She loved gardening, both vegetables and flowers. Each summer she spent hours canning and freezing fresh vegetables that she shared selflessly with her friends and family. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting and sewing. She was a friend to all, a true southern lady and a woman who provided never-ending devotion to her family.
She became a member of the First Baptist Church in 1964 and attended faithfully until her health declined in 2013. She retired from her position of operations officer at Southern National Bank in 1984. Long before the existence of "personal bankers" she assumed that role with ease and commitment.
She was born in Dillon County, South Carolina on May 13th, 1923 to the late Dal and Georgia Johnson. Lena ("Johnnie" to many) is survived by a son, Bill Altman Jr. and wife Carol of Holden Beach; a daughter, Debi Dallas and husband Gerald of Fayetteville; five grandchildren, David Wright, Terral (Christina) Altman, John Paul (Natalie) Altman, Amy (Michael) Armstrong and Kaitlyn (Andrew) Epps; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sibling, Virginia J. Meekins of Latta, South Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Major (Retired) William T. Altman, a daughter, Belva Gayle Altman, a son-in-aw, Ivan Gene Collins Jr., a grandson, Andrew Gene Collins, her parents and two brothers.
A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Raeford First Baptist Church. The funeral will follow at noon in the church with the Rev. Tom Lee officiating. Burial will follow in the Raeford Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the visitation and following the graveside service.

Eric J. Tyler

Eric Jerome Tyler, 48, of 252 Chamberlin Blvd, passed away October 21, 2018 at the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

He is survived by Nedra Tyler.

A visitation has been planned at the Colvin Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, October 28, 2018 from 3-6 p.m. The funeral will be held Sunday, October 29, 2018 at noon at the Guiding Star Holiness Church located at 824 Weiss Avenue, Fayetteville.  Burial will be in the Sandhill State Veteran Cemetery. Colvin Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.

Myra M. Snow

Myra Michelle McRae Snow, 57, died October 20, 2018.

She was born and raised in Lumber Bridge. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Laurel Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 745 Purdie Road, Lumber Bridge. In lieu of flowers the family is asking for monetary donations at 876 Purdie Road Lumber Bridge, NC 28357.

Wyatt G. Upchurch

Wyatt Gray Upchurch of Raeford passed away at his home, Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at the age of 83.
He was born April 22, 1935 in Lee County to Kurley Upchurch and Sulu Campbell Upchurch. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Wyatt Jeffery Upchurch, and his siblings, Arliss ,Waylon and Ireland.
He was an elder at the Raeford Presbyterian Church. He served as a Hoke County commissioner in the 1980s and was on the board of Lumbee Electric, Lumbee Guaranty Bank and Lumbee River Council of Government for many years. He was the owner and operator of Tar Heel Turkey Hatchery, established in 1972, and sold the business to Butterball in 2010. In 1990 he was president of the National Turkey Federation and presented President Bush with the Thanksgiving turkey. He was inducted into the National Turkey Federation Hall of Fame in 2017.
He is survived by his wife, Mary G. Upchurch of Raeford; a daughter, Jodi U. Willis and her husband Wayne of Raeford; two grandchildren, Megan Henderson and her husband Brian of Cary and Catherine Willis of Wilmington; three great-grandchildren, Clara Henderson, Miles Henderson and Emory Henderson all of Cary; two brothers, Avron Upchurch and his wife Mary of Sanford, and Melvin Upchurch and his wife Meta of Sanford; and a sister, Doris Sanders of Fayetteville.
A visitation will be held 10-11 a.m. Friday, October 19, 2018 at Raeford Presbyterian Church, John C. Ropp Fellowship Hall, 128 W. Edinborough Ave. Raeford. 
The funeral will be held after the visitation at 11 a.m. at Raeford Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Steven Fitzgerald and the Rev. Michael McGehee officiating.
Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

William Lawrence "Larry" Upchurch

William Lawrence Upchurch Jr., of Winterville passed away peacefully on October 13, 2018 following a lengthy battle of renal failure.  A "Celebration of Life" will be held at 2 p.m. at the Crumpler Funeral Home Chapel, 131 Harris Avenue, Raeford on Wednesday, October 17 with Dr. Ray Harris officiating. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Better known as "Larry," he was a native of Hoke County.  He was born on October 11, 1942 and was the eldest child of the late William "Bill" Lawrence Upchurch Sr. and Martha Barrington Upchurch. He and his only sister, Martha Alice, were inseparable from an early age and remained so as adults.  In 1968, he married Joy Langdon and together they had two sons, Bill and Bart, whom he dearly loved. Prior to relocating from Raeford, he was a member of Raeford Methodist Church and Raeford Presbyterian Church, singing in both choirs. Prior to his illness, he was an avid hunter and fisherman, a crop-sprayer of 40 years, and later owned and operated Upchurch Trucking Company.  He was a graduate of Hoke County High School and a scholarship recipient to Elon University where he played football. During his high school years, he was an East-West Football selection and was known as "Twinkle Toes" for rarely missing extra points.  He later joined the National Guard as a Specialist 4 and served from 1966 to 1970.  He was quite the all round athlete and outdoorsman.  He enjoyed boating trips with friends and family, with a special love for Bogue Sound. He blessed many friends with delicious collard greens, and his homemade blueberry cheesecake, often accompanied with his over-sized Gerbera Daisies and garden vegetables. He loved his Lord, and during his final days, even prepared his sister and family for his upcoming departure. He faced his illness with dignity and courage, never wanting to alter his family's lifestyle to care for him and was the epitome of independence.   He is survived by sons Brian Bartlett "Bart" Upchurch, and William Lawrence "Bill" Upchurch III; his wife Beaman; grandson Jackson; and granddaughter, Camryn, all of Winterville; a sister, Martha Alice Phillips; brother-in-law and best friend Larry Phillips; and nephew Brad and family. Virginia Locklear

Virginia "Butch" Locklear of Red Springs died October 8, 2018 at her home. She was born on January 25, 1940 to Roy Dian and Maggie Locklear Dial in Hoke County. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Freeman Locklear; her daughter, Cynthia L. Oxendine; two brothers, the Rev. James Dial and Roy Dial Jr.; and one sister, Annie Dial McNeill.
She worked at the House of Raeford for 30 years and worked at the Hoke County Schools for three years. She was a member of Mt. Elim Baptist Church since 1972. She served in the Outreach Program for 10 years. She was a WMU member since 1980, and she was the fellowship hall manager until 2013. She was also an active member of the senior citizen group where she started a quilting group, headed fund raisers, and planned trips. She sang in the adult and senior choirs and she played a part in the beautification of the church by decorating and planting flowers. 
She is survived by three daughters, Bonnie D. Locklear (Randy) of Raeford, Regina Clark (Timothy) of Raeford, and Shawanna L. James (Nelson) of Raeford; two sons, Kevin D. Locklear of Raeford and 1st Lieutenant Justin C. Locklear of Raeford; a son-in-law, Dwight Oxendine; special niece, Carolyn Locklear (Rev. Larry) of Red Springs; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. 
The visitation will be Thursday, October 11, 2018 from 6-9 p.m. at Mt. Elim Baptist Church. The funeral will be Friday, October 12, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Elim Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Services are entrusted to Boles Funeral Home of Red Springs. 

Luther J. Scott

Luther Jimmy Scott, age 70, of Raeford passed away Sunday, October 7, 2018 at his home.

He was born in Cumberland County on March 5, 1948 to Junior Scott and Beatrice McCall Scott. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ruth Alice Cummings Scott and his brother, Johnny Scott. He served in the U.S. Army. His duties included a 16 month tour in Iraq with the 1st Battalion. He retired from the N.C. National Guard.

He is survived by his sister, Shirley Lowery of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and three brothers, Jerry Scott, Larry Scott, and Gary Scott, all of Raeford.

A visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, October 11, 2018 at Crumpler Funeral Home 131 Harris Ave. Raeford.

The funeral will be held Thursday following the visitation at 2 p.m. in the Crumpler Funeral Home Chapel .

Burial with full military honors will be at Rock Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, 360 T.C. Jones Road, Raeford.

Daniel V. Wright

Daniel V. Wright Jr., 68, of Raeford passed away on Thursday, October 4, 2018.

He was born in Bennettsville, South Carolina on May 18, 1950.

He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Robin; daughter, Melinda Rogers and husband Isaac; grandchildren, Megan and Michael Wright; sister Betty Godbold; brothers, Jimmy Wright and Bobby Wright; and his beloved furbabies, Foxie, Mercie, Cookie, and Bear.

A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at Sullivan's Highland Funeral Service.

Sammy E. Floyd Sr.

Sammy Edward Floyd Sr., age 85, died Wednesday, September 26, 2018 in the VA Medical Center in Fayetteville.
He was born in Bladen County to Earl Gillespie Floyd and Rossie Louise Buffkin Floyd.  In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a sister, June Floyd Woronchuk.
He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp. His career included working for Duke Power Company in Charlotte and for the Beasley Media Group in 1976. He continued working until his death.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Flowers Floyd; two sons, Sammy E. Floyd Jr. of Fayetteville,  and Gregory W. Floyd of Raleigh; a daughter, Helen E. Winter (Ray) of Raleigh; two brothers, Ronnie Floyd of Raeford and Billy Earl Floyd (Lib) of Wallace; two granddaughters, Koren N. Hillard (Sean) and Michelle L. Winter; a great-granddaughter, Madison Grace Hillard; and dearly loved nieces and nephews.  
A graveside service was held at Raeford Cemetery on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Brian Wingo officiating.

Woodrow G. Beard

Woodrow (Woody) Glenn Beard of Red Springs passed away on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton at the age of 74.
He was born on September 9, 1944 in Fayetteville to the late Jasper Lee Beard and Beulah Spell Beard. He was a member of the Cedar Creek Hunting Club and a former member of the Bonnie Doone Volunteer Fire Department in Fayetteville.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Womack Beard of Red Springs; four sons, Woodrow Glenn Beard II, (Maria) of Ocala, Florida, David Beard (Terry) of Ocala, Shelton Lee Beard (Natasha) of Red Springs, and Matthew Beard (Kesha)of Maxton; 11 grandchildren, Glenn III, Brandon, Shelby, Jordan, Brittany, Ashley, Shelton II, Briana, Nevaeh, Keylona, and Matthew Jr.; five grea-grandchildren, Caden, Olivia, Jaelynn, Maddox and Tucker; and a brother, James Beard (Beverly) of Fayetteville.
A visitation will be held Saturday, September 22, 2018 from 7-9 p.m. at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Avenue, Raeford.

David A. Elledge

David Allen Elledge of Raeford passed away on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center at the age of 64.
He was born in Laurinburg on November 22, 1953 to Benjamin A. Elledge and Hazel O. Elledge.
In his earlier years he loved playing his bass guitar in various local bands. He enjoyed low-rider competitions, winning several first place trophies with his truck.
His parents preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Hye Elledge of Raeford, a daughter Melissa Elledge of New York, New York, a brother, Jimmy Elledge of Raeford,and  a sister, Bonita Attwood of Rowland. 
A private service will be held at a later date.

Ireni T. Autry

Ireni Toumaras Autry of Raeford, passed away Saturday, September 1, 2018 at the age of 88. She was born January 27, 1930 to the late John and Eudoxia Toumaras, who were Greek immigrants in Sumter, S.C. She was raised in Burlington, N.C.  She was preceded in death by her husband, George Raz Autry Jr. She met Raz Autry at East Carolina University and they were married in 1951. She graduated from Elon College in 1952 and began her career in education, which spanned 33 years. During her education career she was a teacher and librarian. After retiring in 1985 she was involved in volunteer work with the Hoke County Library system, Hoke County Cooperative Extension and the Hoke County Extension Homemakers Association where she served as the North Carolina State president of the association in 1993. She was a member of Raeford United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. She is survived by her son, George Raz "Skip" Autry III and wife Pandora of Fayetteville; and three grandchildren, Lindsay Sabin and husband David of West Palm Beach, FL, Jackson Autry and wife Alexandra of Asheville, and Samantha Gipson and husband Patrick of Brooklyn, NY. A graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday, September 7, 2018 at Raeford Cemetery. The Reverend Brian Wingo will officiate.  The family will receive friends after the service at Raeford United Methodist Church.
