Annie L. Lindsay

Annie Laurie Lindsay of Fayetteville died May 4, 2019 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center at the age of 86.
She was born March 28, 1933 in Zebulon to David Pearce and Fannie Pearce.
She is preceded in death by her husband G. Lewis Lindsay Sr. She was a member of Galatia Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by a son, Gilbert Lewis (Gil) Lindsay Jr. of Fayetteville; two daughters, Lynn Lindsay Cobb and husband James of Gainesville, Florida, and Jane Lindsay Clifton and husband Wayne of Fayetteville; seven grandchildren, Adam, Heather, Kelly, Rodney, Lindsay, James and Elizabeth; eight great-grandchildren, Nilo, Ladena, Yavi, Brandon Jr., Febi, Devin, Mikhaela and Marcus; and a sister, Janie Steber and husband Norm of Dunn.
A visitation will be held from 11- noon, Saturday May 11, 2019 at Galatia Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall.
A funeralwill follow at noon in the church with the Rev. Brett Johnson officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery,

Chris Martin

Christopher Michael Martin, age 48, of Raeford died May 3, 2019.
He was born in Moore County on August 30, 1970 to Elizabeth (Lib) Norton McVicker and Thurman Martin.
He is survived by his daughter, Kristina Martin of Raeford; one grandson, Josiah King Locklear of Raeford; his stepfather, Billy McVicker of Raeford; two step-brothers, Timothy McVicker and wife Sherry of Graham, and Johnny Wayne McVicker and wife Robin of Maxton; and one step-sister, Linda McDougald and husband Jasper of Fayetteville.
A private memorial service will be held later.

Virginia Baker

Virginia Ann Phillips Baker, 87, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2019 at Wayne UNC Healthcare in Goldsboro.

She was born in Snowville, Virginia on October 21, 1931 to Robert and Elizabeth Cox Phillips.  She was married to the late Joseph Edwin Baker.  She was employed for many years as a cake decorator with Winn-Dixie and always enjoyed the opportunity to work in her garden.  She will also be remembered as a talented seamstress and made the wedding dresses for her daughters.  Above all, she loved spending time with her family and friends. 

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Mark Gettle; daughter, JoAnne Joyner; and brother, Davis Phillips.

She is survived by her children, Kay Baker Scheetz of Hampton, Virginia, Robert Owen Baker and wife Karen of Mount Olive, and Elizabeth "Beth" B. Gettle of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Melissa Koos, Sara Ruhl (Tobias), Alison Baker, Meredith Batchelor (Jonathan), Army Specialist Lukas Baker, Kelly Gettle, and Brett Gettle; and great-grandchildren, Ryan Koos, Brandon Batchelor, Natalie Koos, Haleigh Batchelor, Kamryn Baker, Wesley Ruhl, Branna Baker, Elora Toran, and Claire Ruhl.  She is also survived by her brother, John Phillips and sisters, Barbara Phillips, Helen Monroe and Dot Lancaster.

The family will greet friends on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate her life at 7 p.m. in the chapel with the Rev. Joanna Stallings officiating.  Interment will be on Wednesday at noon in the Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.

Fleeta Maxwell

Fleeta Jarrell Maxwell of Raeford died May 5, 2019 in her home at the age of 92. 
She was born November 30, 1926 in Halifax County to Edward Jarrell and Carrie Turner Jarrell. She is preceded in death by her husband McKoy "Koy" Maxwell. She was a member of the Raeford United Methodist Church. She was the co-owner of Maxwell's Garage in Raeford
She is survived by her daughter Carolyn Schwarcbher and husband Alex of Raeford; a sister, Beulah Johnson and husband Archie of Raeford; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Raeford Cemetery.

Mitchell Walters

Mitchell Thomas Walters of 306 Cole Avenue, Raeford passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2019 in his home at the age of 63.

He was born in Scotland County on March 30, 1956. He was preceded in death by his father, Wilfred T. (Willie) Walters and his brother, James Carl Walters. He was employed with Autumn Care of Raeford and was a volunteer with the Raeford Fire Department and the Hoke County Rescue Squad. He was a master motorcycle mechanic.

He is survived by his mother, Catherine B. Monroe of Raeford; his former wife and best friend, Yvette Sandrock of Virginia; a nephew, Timothy Carl Walters (Mary Alice) of Wilmington; a niece, Abby Walters (Adrian) of Hope Mills; and four great nieces and nephews, Jordan Mirek, Isabelle Mirek, Aslynn Warwick and Waylon Warwick.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2019 at the Raeford Cemetery with the Rev. Brian Wingo officiating. The family will receive friends after service at the home of Catherine Monroe, 306 Cole Ave. Raeford.

Gennie Britt

Gennie Ree (Locklear) Britt of Red Springs died April 29, 2019 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital at the age of 78.
She was born October 30, 1940 at home in Robeson County to Richard and Lina Bell. She met and married Ralph Britt on March 7, 1959 while he served in the military. She followed him to various states, finally settling in California. After over 30 years there, they retired and moved back to North Carolina to be with family. She loved to shop, travel, gamble and take care of her plants. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, father and mother; and her stepmother Rosie Jane Locklear who raised her sisters, Carletter, Dorthy, Betty Jane, Vency, Clementine, and Joyce, brothers, Allen, David Ronald, and Hanford.  
She is survived by her son Bruce (Margerite) Britt of Arkansas; daughters, Carol Gray of the home, Karen (Larry) Martin of California, and Peaches and Tiger of the home; grandchildren, Sophia (Thomas) Silva of California, Christopher Gray of Michigan, Nicole Martin of Washington, Benjamin Martin of California, Brittney Martin of New York, Robert Austin Britt of Alaska; sisters, Martha Faye Bullard, and Lona Mae Strickland; and a brother, Richard Strickland. 

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 2019 at Crumpler Funeral Home in Raeford

Thomas A. Potter

 CMSgt. Thomas "Tom" Angus Potter, Retired U.S.A.F., 92, died Sunday, April 28, 2019.

He was born in Hoke County on April 27, 1927 to Alton and Katie Chisolm Potter.  He was married to the late Annie Lou Smith Potter.  For 32 years, he proudly served in the United States Air Force and protected his country and her allies on multiple deployments during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.  His valor and skill was recognized with numerous decorations.  After his retirement from the Air Force, he taught in the aircraft frame maintenance program at Wayne Community College for 25 years.  He was a member of the Raeford Masonic Lodge #306 A.F. & A.M.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine McDougal.

He is survived by his daughters, Terry Mears and Rhonda G. Potter; son, Thomas David "Dave" Potter; brother, James Potter; grandchildren, Jason Mears, Jennifer Potter Smith and Chris Potter; two great-granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home in Goldsboro followed by a graveside service at 2 p.m. in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Princeton with Scottish and Masonic rites and military honors.

Helen J. Floyd

Helen Jeanne Floyd of Fayetteville passed away April 29, 2019 at the age of 82.
Jeanne was born in Charlotte on July 1, 1936 to Helen and Ward Flowers. She attended Queens College and Flora MacDonald College, majoring in piano.  She was a pianist at Walnut Creek Country Club and Goldsboro Country Club and various functions in town.  She enjoyed music and needlepoint.  She was married in Charlotte at Caldwell Memorial Presbyterian Church on August 26, 1956, to Sammy Edward Floyd, a purchasing agent for Duke Power Company.  They moved to Goldsboro in 1977 when Sam began his 40 years of work with Beasley Media group.  They moved to Fayetteville in 2011.  
She was preceded in death by her husband Sam Floyd, who died September 26, 2018; and her grandson, Raymond John Winter of Raleigh,  who died July 9, 2010.
She is survived by two sons, Greg Floyd of Raleighand Sammy Floyd Jr.; a daughter, Helen Winter (Raymond) of Raleigh; two granddaughters, Koren Hilliard (Sean) of Wake Forest, and Michelle Winter; a great-granddaughter, Maddison Grace Hilliard; a sister-in-law, Lib Floyd and brother-in-law, Bill Floyd, of Warsaw; and brother-in-law, Ronald Floyd of Raeford.  
The family will receive friends 10-11 a.m. Thursday, May 2, 2019 at Crumpler Funeral Home in Raeford. 
The funeral will follow the visitation at 11 a.m.
Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

Glenda C. Lester

Glenda Clippard Lester, 76, died unexpectedly April 12, 2019 at FirstHealth Hoke Hospital.

She was born July 26, 1942. Glenda, or Grandma as many knew her, lived a selfless life serving her community. As a member of Raeford Presbyterian Church, she served as an elder, committee member of Ministry of Christian Education, chairwoman of the Spiritual Nurture Committee, member of Coastal Carolina Presbytery Missions Committee, youth advisor, and Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher. She made regular trips to Mexico to build houses with Faith Ministry. She was known to regularly provide scholarship money to underprivileged kids of the church, and sponsor children through Compassion International. She provided free tutoring for children at the local library, and served on the Friends of the Library Committee. She was heavily involved with Hoke County Habitat for Humanity, Operation Christmas Child, fundraising for the book mobile, and the book exchange across Hoke County. In her 57-year career as a teacher, she touched the lives of countless children. She spent 46 years at J.W. McLauchlin Elementary School, before retiring from the state. She then spent an additional 11 years at Flora Macdonald Academy. In 1986 she was honored as Hoke County's Teacher of the Year. 

She is survived by a sister, Deborah C. Wellington of New Bern; two nephews, Jason Bryant Wellington (Laura) of Wilmington, and Patrick Brock Wellington (Theresa) of Indian Land, South Carolina; two great-nephews, Charlie Wellington, and Luke Wellington; one great-niece, Betsy Wellington; and her companion in life, L.S. Brock of Raeford, and his daughter, Lynn Brock.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 18, 2019 from 10-11 a.m. in John C. Ropp Fellowship Hall, at Raeford Presbyterian Church. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Steven Fitzgerald officiating. Burial will be in Raeford Cemetery.

Mollie Whiteis

Mollie Ann Scull Whiteis, 81, of Decatur, Texas died Thursday, March 21, 2019.  

She was born November 29, 1937 in Raeford. She was the wife of Lester Martin Whities from 1954 until his death in 2002.  She worked for Sears for 20 years, and was a devoted volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She was also a member of Victory in Christ Lutheran Church.  She is survived by her daughter, Shirley and husband Charles Cataldo of Southlake, Texas; grandchildren, Christopher Cataldo, Jennifer Scott, and Michael Whiteis; great-granddaughter Emilie Whiteis; brother, Josh Scull of Raeford; two sisters, Elizabeth Maxwell of Claudeville, Virginia and Marguerite Dees of Raeford; and Helen Morris of Azle, Texas, and Col. Robert J. Mattes of Annadale, Virginia.

Burial was March 25, 2019 at Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park in Colleyville, Texas. 

Glenda Craig

Glenda D. Craig, age 78, of Supply, formerly of Raeford, died April 14, 2019 at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick in Bolivia.
She was born April 8, 1941 in Robeson County. She is preceded in death by her husband, Howard Craig.
She is survived by sons, Billy Craig of Supply, and Kenneth Craig of Raeford; a daughter, Yvonne Whitmire of Supply; seven grandchildren, Beth Cook, A.J. Combs, Brittany Witherite, Christian Craig, Justin Craig, Kevin Craig, and LeeAnna Craig; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 17, 2019 from 10-11 a.m. at Crumpler Funeral Home in Raeford.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at Crumpler Funeral Home Chapel with Otho Tew officiating. Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

Grace E. Kelton

The Rockfish community sadly lost a pillar on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 when Grace Evelyn Kelton, known by many as Amazing Grace, peacefully passed away at home from natural causes at the age of 86. She was born December 12, 1932.
She attended Fayetteville State University and the School of Nursing in Wilmington. Her contributions to the lives of many include, among other things, her lifetime membership at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic church, where she served on many committees, her distinguished service to early education in the Hoke County School System for more than 40 years, her co-founding the Lawrence Ray Scholarship fund, a 20-year stint as a member of the NAACP, supporter of the Rockfish Neighborhood Community Watch Program, and the development of a student mentoring program.
She is survived by her husband Worthy F. Kelton, children and grandchildren, Philip C. Kelton of Yardley, Pennsylvania, Karen M. Kelton of Atlanta, Georgia, Kristopher C. Kelton of Raeford, Paul F. Kelton of Ft. Washington, Maryland, Dr. Teresa P.M. Kelton of Milford, Connecticut, Kristen C. Kelton of Rockfish,  Emily R. Kelton of Durham, and Howard Bailey, Willie Ellerbe, Kara Kelton, Olivia Kelton, Lauryn Kelton, Sean Kelton, K'marion Ellerbe and Aniyah Ellerbe; a sister, Brenda Parkins; her brother, Anthony Martin; and Betsey Bailey. She was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret Martin and one brother, Fred Currie.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Herring Funeral in Fayetteville. The funeral will be Friday, April 12, 2019 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Eastlawn Cemetery in Raeford. Pallbearers are David Avilla, Ervin Dudley, Maurice Parkins, Michael Parkins, Philip Kelton and Paul Kelton.

Carson A. Clippard

Carson Alexander Clippard Jr. of Raeford, formerly of Raleigh, passed away Monday, April 08, 2019 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital at the age of 81.

He was born in Hoke County on July 23, 1937 to Carson Alexander Clippard and Ruby Haire Clippard

He was a professional engineer with the North Carolina Department of Transportation when he retired.  He was a member of Raeford Presbyterian Church, an Eagle Scout, Hamlet Troop 150, and recipient of The Order of the Long Leaf Pine. He was Secretary Emeritus of the Masonic Lodge #198 in Cary,  a 32-degree Scottish Rite Mason, a charter member of Amran Shrine Temple and chaplain of the Edith Chapter 160 Order of the Eastern Star.

He is survived by two sisters, Glenda C. Lester of Raeford and Deborah C. Wellington of New Bern; two nephews, Jason Bryant Wellington (Laura) of Wilmington, and Patrick Brock Wellington (Theresa) of Indian Land, South Carolina; two great-nephews, Charlie Wellington and Luke Wellington; and one great-niece, Betsy Wellington.

A visitation will be held  from 11 a.m. until noon Saturday, April 13, 2019 at the Raeford Presbyterian Church in the John C. Ropp Fellowship Hall.

The funeral will follow at noon in the church with the Rev. Dr. Steve Fitzgerald officiating.

Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery with full Masonic Rites.
