Sally M. Locklear

Sally Mae McMillan Locklear, 76, of Raeford, died Wednesday, March 18, 2015.
She was born October 19, 1938 in Robeson County to Annie Mae and Archie McMillan. She was married to Diaz Locklear who preceded in her death. She graduated from Robeson County Public Schools.
Survivors are: daughters, Sallie Dial of the home, and Annie Locklear of Red Springs; sons, Belton Locklear of Raeford, Stephen Wayne Dial of Elizabethtown, and Bobby Dean Locklear of Pembroke; and sisters, Marie Chavis of Walkula and Sarah Roland of South Carolina.
The funeral will be held Sunday, March 22 at 3 p.m. in Crumpler Funeral Home in Red Springs. Burial will be at the family cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday, March 21 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Louis Chester

Louis Chester, 82, of 911 N. Jackson St., formerly of Union Pointe, Georgia., died Saturday, March 14, 2015.
Survivors are his wife, Evelyn; children, Sharon, Wayne, Cynthia Kershaw, Leola Hailey, Brenda Coller, Clavance Patterson, Eboni Leavell, Guy Jenkins, Delmar Williams; and a number of grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Sunday, March 22 at 3 p.m. in Silver Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Viewing will be held Saturday, March 21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Butler Funeral Home chapel, Raeford.

Alvin Walker, Sr.

Alvin Walker, Sr., 78, of Raeford, died Sunday, March 15, 2015.
Survivors are: his wife, Mary McKinnon; children, Wanda J. Beck(Michael), Alvin Walker, Jr.(Cynthia), and Carl J. Walker(Sherrell); sister, Barbara Walker Mack, eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two godsons and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
The funeral will be held Saturday, March 21 at 1 p.m. in Freedom Chapel AME Zion Church. Private burial will be held at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery.
Viewing will be held at Buie Funeral Home Friday, March 20 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Donna L. Moore

Donna Lucas Moore of 2508 Penny Drive died Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at Highsmith Rainey Hospice at the age of 49.

She was born in Germany on May 15, 1965. She was preceded in death by her father, Eugene Rodney Lucas.

 She is survived by her husband, Terry L. Moore of Fayetteville; her children, Christopher G. Colosky (Jamie) of Crouse, Frankie W. Colosky (Sherry) of Salemburg, Jennifer M. Howard (Robert) of Fayetteville; her mother, Patricia A. Lucas of Fayetteville; her brothers, Eugene Lucas (Tabitha) of Maxton, William Lucas (Dawn) of Davis Bridge, Donald Lucas, Sr. of Lumber Bridge; and two grandchildren, Garrett Howard of Fayetteville and Layla Colosky of Salemburg. 

Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 20, 2015 at Crumpler Funeral Home-Raeford, and other times at the home of Mrs. Moore, 2508 Penny Drive, Fayetteville.

The funeral will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at New Hope Church of God, 3109 Camden Rd, Fayetteville. Burial will be in the Parkton City Cemetery.

Winnie M. Woods

Winnie M. Woods, age 90, of Red Springs, passed away on Friday, March 13, 2015 at Autumn Care in Raeford. She was born in Scotland County on October 3, 1924.
She was preceded in death by three sons, Martin Henry Woods, Marvin Woods, and James Sherman Knight; a brother, Lacy McGee; and a sister, Eddie Lee.
She is survived by her husband, Henry Woods of Raeford; Teddy Knight of Lumberton, Ronald Knight (Sara) of Shannon, and Mareno Woods of Raeford; daughters Dianna Anderson (Kevin) of Phoenix, Arizona, Faye Storms of Roswell, New Mexico, Sue Oxendine (Johnny) of Raeford, Wanda Carol Davis (Roy) of Raeford, and Patricia Woods of Knoxville, Tenessee; a daughter-in-law, Caroline Chavis of Raeford; more than 30 grandchildren; and more than 20 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Floyd Memorial Chapel, 809 East 5th Street in Lumberton.

Paul L. Burnley

Paul Lawrence Burnley died Wednesday, March 11 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He was born on May 7, 1925, in St Louis, Missouri, to the late Henry and Mable Burnley, the last of three children.

He was a humble, unassuming man with a quiet demeanor.

He received his early education in St. Louis and continued his formal education at Fayetteville Technical Community College and Fayetteville State University.  During World War II, he proudly served his country as an officer in the United States Navy.  While serving in the Navy, he served as port battalion from food to ammunition, and received numerous awards and citations in appreciation for his years of courage and dedication. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on December 13, 1945.

He had a passion for writing and pursued that talent as a career.  He worked for a host of newspapers in St Louis, New York, and Chicago. Upon his retirement to the Fayetteville area, he wrote for the Fayetteville Observer and The News Journal in Raeford.  He was author of two books, "A View from the Other Side" and "The Carribean Connection." 

He served on many advisory boards and groups.  He was one of the founding members of the Second Day Writers.

He was married to the love of his life, Flossie Wilson, for 62 years. They always sat a couple on Sunday morning during church services.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Flossie Wilson Burnley, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

The funeral will be held March 17 at Bridges Grove A.M.E. Zion Church , 251 Bridges Grove Church Road, Shannon. The burial will follow in the Sandhills Veteran Cemetery in Spring Lake on Wednesday, March 18.

John Wilkes


John Daniel "J.D." Wilkes, Jr. of Raeford died Wednesday, March 11, 2015 in Autumn Care of Raeford at the age of 89.
He was born in Hoke County on October 4, 1925 to the late John Daniel Wilkes, Sr. and Mamie Currie Wilkes. He was preceded in death by his wives, Hester Stewart Wilkes and Leola Pate Wilkes. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII.
He is survived by his son, Wayne Wilkes (Alice) of Fayetteville; his daughters, Wanda Lupo of Raeford, Kay Taylor (Ronnie) of Raeford, Mary "Nan" Baxley of Raeford, and Agnes Creech (Dwight) of Las Vegas, Nevada; his brother, Ervin Wilkes of Clyde;  his sister, Peggy Inman (Dewey) of Raeford; sister-in-law Shirley Wilkes of Wagram; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and special friend Mavis Byrd of McColl, South Carolina.
Visitation will be 1 p.m., Saturday, March 14, 2015 at Crumpler Funeral Home in Raeford.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 14, 2015 at Highland Biblical Gardens with the Rev. Randall Snead.

Dolores B. Dial

Dolores Barton Dial, of 425 Dial Road in the Antioch Community in Hoke County, departed this life on March 9, 2015 at Wesley Pines Retirement Community in Lumberton.

She grew up on a farm with her large family.  She was well known for her pumpkin pies, fruit cakes, collards, pound cakes, chitterlings and souse meat (head cheese).

She loved her family and she loved her flowers, particularly roses.

She was preceded in death by her husband (Mr. Peter Dial, Jr.); her parents, Wardell and Lizzy Barton; two brothers, George Lloyd and Royal "Pap" Barton; and one sister, Wendy Barton.  She is survived by one son, Peter Anthony Dial, III of Rolesville; four daughters, Heather Kimberly Dial Sellers and her husband Justin of Apex, Amy Dial Rice of Charlotte,Cynthia Dolores Dial of Salisbury, and Lana Dial of Raleigh; four grandchildren; three brothers, Paul Barton of Pembroke, Wardell "Buckey" Barton Jr., of Wagram, and Beachmond "Beach" Barton of Coatesville, Pennsylvania.; eight sisters, Helen Locklear and Peggy Hunt of Pembroke, Emma Jane Brewer of Fayetteville;, Mabel D. Locklear of Lumberton, and Doris Barton, Sally Ann Bullard, Mary Ann Graham and Linda Barton Dial of Maxton.

The family will receive friends at Locklear & Son Funeral Home, 916 Union Chapel Road, Pembroke, on Friday, March 13, 2015 from6-8 p.m..  A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 14 at Dundarrach Baptist Church, 875 Hall Road, Shannon, with the Rev. Manford Locklear officiating.

The family requests donations be made to Dundarrach Baptist Church, Burnt Swamp Baptist Association or to a charity of your choice in lieu of flowers in her memory.

Services have been entrusted to Locklear and Son of Pembroke, NC.

Maurice D. Mack

Maurice Delano Mack, son of the late George Finley and Sylvia Robertson, was born on December 16, 1952.  He died Sunday March 8, 2015.  He was at Vidant Care Hospital in Greenville.

He attended school in Abilene, Texas.  A carpenter by trade, he moved to Hoke County in the late 1980's to complete construction projects.  He met his wife, Shirley in Raeford and they made their home in Goldsboro where he affiliated with New Bethel Church.  He was a deacon and served faithfully in many capacities.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Shirley Newsome Mack, six sons, 30 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

A homecoming Service will be held Sunday, March 15, 2015 from 5 -7 at Haskins Funeral Home, 601 East Ash Street, Goldsboro, NC 27530.

Barbara Anne Ward

Barbara Anne McCoury Ward, 74, of Fayetteville passed away Thursday, February 12, 2015 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

She was born August 6, 1940 in Avery County, a daughter of the late Ed and Anne Roth McCoury.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed reading, especially her Bible, working in her yard, word puzzles and playing with her grandchildren.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Delmar Ward; brothers, Tommy McCoury, T.Y. McCoury, David McCoury, and Eddie McCoury Jr.; and sister, Colleen Martincak.

She has left to cherish her memory her daughters, Barbara Colson and husband Robert of Raeford, and Annedda Patrie and husband Dave of Spindale; sons, James Ward and wife Donna Schminkey of Harrisonburg, Virginia, John Ward of Hope Mills, and Timothy Ward and wife Shannon of Huntersville; sisters, Rosa King and husband John of Lebanon, Indiana, Mary Etta Perez and husband Roberto of High Point, Bertha Young and husband Dale of Newland, and Shelia Perry and husband Jim of Banner Elk; and eight grandchildren.

The funeral was held at 10 a.m. Monday, February 16 at the St. Lucien Catholic Church with Father Christopher Gober officiating. Interment was in the McCoury's Rock Cemetery.

Barry E. Guin

Barry E. Guin of 160 Sandhills Drive, Aberdeen, died, Thursday, March 05, 2015 in FirstHealth Hospice House at the age of 52.

He was born in Cumberland County on July 19, 1962 to the late William R. Guin and Marie Wilson Guin. He was preceded in death by his brother, William Roy (Billy) Guin, Jr. He was an excellent husband, father, and brother.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Sandy W. Guin of Aberdeen; his children, Christina Renee Guin (Vance) of Pinebluff, Angela D. Guin (Jamie) of Pinebluff, and Barry E. Guin, Jr (Amanda) of West End; his grandchildren, Destiny Steed, Thomas Lerma, Christopher Thompson, Shiann Lerma, Kayley Hubbard, Raul Gonzalez, and Faith Mills; his brothers, Donald R. Guin (Lynn) of Raeford and Timothy M. Guin of Greensboro; two aunts, Jean W. Wade (Jim) of Raeford, and Ester Mae Harris (Bob) of Raeford; and an uncle, Robert Guin of Raeford.

A graveside memorial service was held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 7, 2015 at the Raeford Cemetery.
