Edwin "Buddy" Newton

Edwin Bennett  "Buddy" Newton, born July 16th 1934, peacefully passed away at age 84 on Wednesday August 22, 2018 in his home in Puppy Creek with family by his side.
He grew up on the farm in the Puppy Creek community.  He met and married his high school sweetheart, Edith McNeill Newton in 1953. They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. A pillar of the Puppy Creek community, he dedicated his life to family, agriculture and community service. He served on numerous boards including the Farm Service Association, Progressive Savings and Loans, Alcoholic Beverage Control, and Puppy Creek Fire Department, where he served as chief and president of the Board of Directors for several years. He was a lifelong member and deacon in Galatia Presbyterian Church. 
He was awarded Farmer of the Year in 1954 for his outstanding contributions to North Carolina Agriculture by Governor William B. Umstead. The Woodmen of the World presented him the Conservation award in 1973 for his dedication to conservation through agriculture. For his many years of dedicated service to his community and the fire department, he was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Governor James B. Hunt in 1995. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall Newton and Cleva Martin Newton and sister, Mildred Newton Brisson. He is survived by his wife Edith McNeill Newton; two children, daughter Cathy Newton Watts her husband Randy Watts, and son Marshall McNeill Newton and wife Allison Poole Newton; grandchildren Amy Watts Chesson, Randall Bennett Watts, Marshall McNeill Newton Jr., and Mary Lawrence Newton; and a great-grandchild, Hayden Saunders Chesson.

Visitation will be held at noon at Galatia Presbyterian Church on Friday Aug. 24, followed by the funeral at 1 p.m.

Joseph L. Shepard Jr.

Joseph Lawrence Shepard Jr., 72, passed away on Sunday, July 29, 2018, in Rex Hospital in Raleigh.  He was a Vietnam veteran, a member of VFW 9103, and a retired school teacher at Western Harnett High School.  He also served as an elder at Flat Branch Presbyterian Church.

Surviving is his wife, Donna Shepard and daughter, Catharin Shepard.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 26, 2018, at 1:30 p.m. at Flat Branch Presbyterian Church in Bunnlevel with Dr. Mike Armstead officiating.

William L. Gosnell

William Lee "Duke," Gosnell passed away June 29, 2018, at St. Mary's Hospital, Richmond, Va. He was a native of North Carolina and a long-time resident of Richmond. He was a long-time member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church Choir, Richmond, and the Richmond Symphony Chorus.

He is preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. and Mrs. W. Ray Gosnell; brother, Landrum Ray; and sisters, Martha Jarrett and Fay Boroughs.

He is survived by a sister, Ava Inman and husband, Frank, of Raeford, two nieces, three nephews, and their families.

A graveside memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at Taylor Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery in Jackson Springs.

Doreen "Dodie" Butler

Doreen "Dodie" Butler gained her wings and went home to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 27, 2018.  She was born in Kettering, England to Harry and Rose Pope who preceded her in death.
She was a shining light in the world that never met a stranger. She was generous beyond measure and always willing to lend a hand, listening ear or shoulder to cry on.
She spent her time cultivating many lasting friendships, being a strong and faithful mother to her children, and a devoted Nannie to her four grandchildren. She loved Prince, music, and gardening, and lived life with exuberance and optimism. She passionately volunteered her time at the Hoke Literacy Council, Mayte's Rescue and with many hospice patients over the years.
She is survived by her two children, Tara and Corey; her son-in-law, Christopher Murdock; her four grandchildren, Jade, Hannah, Abby and Ethan; her brothers, Byron, Wyndam, Anthony, and Stewart; her sister, Patricia; and her many adopted families and friends.
A memorial service will be held August 4, 2018 at 5 p.m. at Raeford Assembly of God, Red Springs Rd., Raeford.

William "Billy" Black

William A. (Billy) Black of Raeford passed away Sunday, July 29, 2018 at St. Joseph of the Pines at the age of 79.
He was born August 18, 1938 in Hoke County to William Alex (Buddy) Black and Hazel Conoly Black Davis, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brother Johnny Black and grandson Brian Neal Black.
He is survived by two sons, Michael Allen Black of Lake Tillery, and Roger Craig Black of Laurel Hill; a daughter, Cynthia (Cindy) Black Carpenter (Joe) of Laurinburg; a sister, Ann Black Erickson (Michael) of Maynardville, Tennessee; five grandchildren, Meagan Carpenter Dial (Champ), Joseph Carpenter, Craig Black, Tabitha Wyland, and Brandi Kittredge; 11 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at Crumpler Funeral Home 131 Harris Ave. Raeford.

SFC (RET) Charles F. Brosh

SFC (RET) Charles (Chuck) Frederick Brosh of Fayetteville went to his eternal resting place on Sunday July 22, 2018, at the age of 65.
He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on February 17, 1953 to the late John J. Brosh and Grace Stolte Brosh. He is preceded in death by his siblings, Marie, Marsha and Joseph.
He retired from the U.S. Army 5th Special Forces as a SFC. He was a loving and caring man.
He is survived by his wife Martha A. Brosh of Fayetteville; son, CW3 Tony Brosh and wife Dawn of Raeford; four grandchildren, Anthony, Mikaela, Ronald, and Donna Jo; two brothers, John and Frank; and six sisters, Joann, Grace, Libby, Mary, Deborah, and Donna.
The funeral was held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 27, 2018 at Crumpler Funeral Home Chapel
Burial with full military honors was in Oakridge Cemetery, 1019 W. Broad St. St. Pauls.

Alice J. Buy

Alice Jane Buy of Raeford, passed away on Thursday July 26, 2018 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, at the age of 92.
She was born in Monmouth County, N.J. on April 9, 1926 to the late Fred and Alice Siegmund.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Buy, an infant daughter, Patricia L. Buy and a son, Fletcher D. Buy. She was Past Worthy Matron with the Eastern Star in Asbury Park, NJ.
Survivors include two sons, David W. Buy of Raeford and Doug A. Buy and his wife, LuAnn of Keansburg, NJ.
A memorial service will be held in New Jersey at a later date.

James Franklin McPhatter, 67, Red Springs, died on July 17, 2018 at Cape Fear Valley Hospital.

Scott Fuhs

Scott Fuhs, 46, of Raeford passed away on Monday, July 9, 2018.

He was a highly decorated Army Sergeant First Class. He obtained his bachelors of science degree in History and was an avid car and history buff.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Rachel Elizabeth Fuhs and his brother, Brian Fuhs.

He is forever remembered by his wife, Amy; son, Jack; parents, William and Carol Fuhs; and sister, Mya and her husband, Shawn Collins.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 10 am Thursday, July 19, 2018 in JFK Chapel on Ft. Bragg. A funeral service with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on a later date.

Lula D. McEachin

Lula Doris McEachin died Friday, July 6, 2018.

She was born on February 14, 1937 to Estella and Mitchell McEachin in Bowmore.

"Doris," as everyone in the family fondly called her—she was known as Lula or Lu by her work family—was the second oldest of five sisters, Maggie Lois, Ruth Vivian, Gladys Louise, and Estella Sandra.

She graduated in 1955 from Upchurch High School where she was a majorette.

She moved to New York shortly after graduating, where she planted her new roots. It was there that she met and married Charles Bernard Holt. From this matrimonial union were born a daughter Verna Denise and a son Jimmy Bernard.

She worked at the Brooklyn House of detention on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.

She decided to go to school to get her bachelor's degree in 1972. It took her 8 years, working during the day and attending college at night. In 1980, she graduated from the College of New Rochelle with a bachelor's degree in the arts.

She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her savior in May of 1979. She continued to work for the City of New York in various agencies and programs, retiring in 1994. She continued to work part time as substitute teacher in the Hoke County school district. She was also a hospice volunteer.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her daughter Verna D. Darby, who was by her side when she passed, and her son-in-law Darrin D. Darby; five grandchildren, Michael Darrin Darby, Darrin Charles Darby, Danielle Elizabeth Darby, Dominique April Darby, and Taylor Mangabang-Holt; and four great-grandchildren, Divino Deon Silverio-Mendez (Dominique), Gabriella Marie Karow Holt (Taylor), McKenzie Darby, and Kaden Darby (Michael).

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Bernard Holt in 1983, her parents, and her son Jimmy Bernard Holt.

Peggy Calloway

 Peggy Ashburn Calloway of Raeford passed away on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst at the age of 88.
She was born in Surry County on January 20, 1930, to the late Fred L. Ashburn and Stella Bruner Ashburn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph J. Calloway and her siblings, Hessie Ashburn, Wade Ashburn, Louise Ashburn Manning and Bobbie Ashburn Stone.

She was a   member of Raeford First Baptist Church. She retired in 1990 from Burlington Industries. After her retirement, she became a tour hostess with American Tours and a volunteer with Liberty Hospice in Raeford. 
She is survived by a son, Larry Calloway and his wife Gail of North Myrtle Beach, SC; two daughters, Nancy C. Morgan and her husband Larry of North Myrtle Beach, SC, and Debra C. McNeill and her husband Billy of Shannon; seven grandchildren, Jason Calloway and his wife Hope, Brad Calloway and his wife Brandi, Jeff Morgan and his wife Beth, Jennifer Morgan, Elizabeth Hodgin and her husband Chad, and Rebecca Crumpler and her husband Ray and Kimberly McNeill. She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held from 10 until 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at Raeford First Baptist Church. 
The funeral will follow at 11:30 at the church with the Rev. Tom Lee and the Rev. Jim Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

Howard L. Batton

Howard Leon Batton, 68, of Raeford died on July 2nd 2018 in Moore Regional Hospital.
He was loved by friends and family alike and was known for having a kind heart and a laughing soul.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and a sister, Virginia Willis of Rockhill, South Carolina.

Christine A. Cothran

Christine Armstrong Cothran of Raeford passed away July 2, 2018 at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst at the age of 87.
She was born in Cumberland County on March 26, 1931, to Lawrance Garland Armstrong and Clyde Hair Armstrong. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband for more than 60 years, William (Bill) Cothran, her son William Joseph (Joe) Cothran and her daughter-in-law, Mary Ross Cothran.
She was a member of Raeford First Baptist Church for more than 65 years, WMU, and was a Sunday School teacher for the Gleaners Class for more than 30 years. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Pembroke State University with a degree in Elementary Education in 1970, and from East Carolina University with a master's degree. She was a teacher at Benjamin Martin Elementary School in Cumberland County for more than 25 years. She also tutored students in Hoke County.
She is survived by two daughters, Judith Christine Cothran of Raeford, and Patricia C. McNeill (Mike) of Raeford; four grandchildren, Michael Patrick McNeill (Shelley) of Dothan, Alabama, James Dwight McNeill of Raeford, Michael Taylor Cothran of Fort Worth, Texas, and Christine Nicole Cothran of Plano, Texas; great-grandchildren Andrew Connor McNeill, and Matthew Graham McNeill; and a brother, Jerry Armstrong (Susie) of Fayetteville.
A visitation will be held 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday July 7, 2018 at Raeford First Baptist Church.
The funeral will follow the visitation at 1 p.m. Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery.

Fletcher D. Buy

Fletcher D. Buy of Raeford passed away on Thursday June 28, 2018 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville at the age of 66. He was born in Neptune, New Jersey on October 22, 1951. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Buy. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Abacus Masonic Lodge in New Jersey. He is survived by his mother, Jane Buy of Raeford, and two brothers, Doug Buy (LuAnn) of Keansburg, New Jersey, and David Buy of Raeford. A Memorial Services will be held later.  Crumpler Funeral Home of Raeford is serving the family.
