George T. Paris
He was a 1987 graduate of St. Andrew's Presbyterian College, graduating Suma Cum Laude with a degree in business. He enlisted in the North Carolina Army national Guard in 1957, retiring in 1993 from the U.S. Army Reserves as a Full Colonel. He devoted nearly four decades of public service to the Town of Red Springs, serving eight years as a town commissioner (1971-1979), and 30 years as mayor (1979-2009). Amongst the many ways he led the changes and enhancements that moved Red Springs forward, most memorable was his tireless leadership through the restoration of the town following the devastation caused by the tornados in March 1984. In 2010 he received the Long Leaf Pine award for distinguished service to the state of North Carolina from Governor Bev Perdue.
He became a Registered Land Surveyor in North Carolina in 1967 and was owner of George T Paris and Associates, PA - Land Surveying, where he continued to work until his passing. He was a long-time member of the NC Society of Surveyors, also serving as President, as well as a member of the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Land Surveyors, serving as Chairman in 1985. He was a dedicated member of the Red Springs Presbyterian Church where he was ordained as a deacon in 1970, an Elder in 1987 and served as Clerk of Session for many years. He also sang in the church's choir since 1955.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Rufus Paris and Mary Watkins Bullock Paris, his wife, Euolene Sizemore Paris, his brothers Charles Paris, Jr, Ben Paris, and Walter Paris. He leaves behind his children, Tom Paris (Laurie) of Red Springs, Elizabeth Paris Floyd (Al) of Raleigh, and Sam Paris (Sasha) of Bristow, Virginia, a sister Mary Paris Templeton (Bill) of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren..
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 3, 2021 in Alloway Cemetery in Red Springs, with the Rev. Dari Rowen officiating. All attendees are asked and expected to wear masks and follow all COVID-19 social distancing regulations.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests for donations in his honor be made to Red Springs Presbyterian Church, 115 North Vance St., Red Springs, N.C. 28377.

Betty Currie
She was born on September 12, 1937 in Maxton to the late Jesse Benton Burns and Norma McDowell Burns She was preceded in death by her husband Hugh Edward Currie Jr., her siblings Helen Priest, Jesse Mae Jackson and Bobby Burns She attended Shiloh Presbyterian Church and retired from J.P. Stevens in Wagram after 35 years of service.
She is survived by her daughter Harriett Currie Johnson of Raeford; and a sister Lina Burns Young of Rock Hill, South Carolina.
Visitation will be held from 2-3 p.m. Monday at Crumpler Funeral Home in Raeford. A graveside service will follow at 3 p,m, at the Raeford Cemetery with the Rev. Rufus McLean officiating.

Johnny “John” Thomas Hottel
Johnny "John" Thomas Hottel, age 68 of Fayetteville, died at home on Wednesday, December 16, 2020.
Born in Cumberland County, he was the son of the late Charles Thomas and Betty Nell Faucette Hottel. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Lonzie and Nellie Faucette and John and Marguerite Hottel.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Deering Hottel, his great love God gave him who cared for him at home until his passing; his son, Jason Hottel of Myrtle Beach; his daughter, Jenna Hottel of Myrtle Beach; two sisters, Joanne Babyak (Rick) of Oviedo, Florida and Joy Warren of White Lake; a brother, Jay Hottel (Laura) of Eastover; his former wife and friend, Leigh Hottel of Myrtle Beach; step-son Tommy Deering (Vanessa) and their children Cameron and Lauren; brother-in-law Johnny Henson; nephews, Jordan Hottel, Brett Babyak, Jamie Warren, Martin Hottel, Victor Hottel and Andrew Townsend; and nieces, Cameron Watson, Jessica Johnson, and Julia Pope.
He was a people person and never met a stranger. His love of Jesus was very evident in his daily walk and he shared his faith with others without hesitation. His spirit of generosity, hospitality, and service to his church and community will be missed. His sense of humor and love of life will always live on in the hearts of those who knew him and loved him.
A celebration of life will be held Monday, December 21, 2020 at 3 p.m. at Pinecrest Funeral & Cremation Services in Hope Mills. The funeral was streamed live on Facebook on his daughter Jenna Leigh Hottel's page.

Hazel Irene Anderson Reedy
Hazel Irene Anderson Reedy of Pinehurst died Saturday, December 19, 2020 at the age of 97.
She was born on June 21, 1923 in Templeton, Pennsylvania to the late Incel and Martha Jane Anderson. She was preceded in death by her son John Howard Reedy Sr., her daughter-in-law Ethel Baker Reedy, and her siblings, Gene, Grace, Margaret, Charles, Kenneth, Janetta, James, Leroy, Mary, Dorothy, Flossie, and Edward.
She is survived by her grandson, John Howard Reedy Jr. and his wife Jamie of Raeford; two great-grandchildren, Shannon Reedy and Robbie Reedy, both of Raeford; a sister, Elsie Slagle of Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held later in Pennsylvania.

George Rios
George Rios of Raeford went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at the age of 62.
He was born in Manhattan New York on September 28, 1958, to the late Raul Rios and Agripina Torres Gonzalez. He retired from the U.S. Army. He received a master's degree in theology.
He is survived by a son, George Rios Jr. of Apex; three daughters, Margarita Rios Burgess of Germany, Mercedez Millagros Rios of San Diego, California, and Shaun Monique Rios of Sanford; a stepson, Leo Troutman of Orlando, Florida; six grandchildren; two brothers, Ruben Gonzalez of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and Carlos Rios of Topeka, Kansas; and two sisters, Noemi Gonzales and Magarita Irizarry.
A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, December 19, 2020 at the Raeford Cemetery with full military honors.

Bill Eugene Herrin
Bill Eugene Herrin, 77, passed away in his home Thursday, December 3, 2020.
He was born January 23, 1943 to the late John Merrill and Virginia Hill Herrin and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Billy was a butcher for over 55 years and a large portion of his career was spent working in Hoke County, where he was mostly known for working at Hardin's Food Store in Rockfish. He was a simple man who enjoyed simple things and loved to make people laugh, especially with the occasional "inappropriate" joke.
He is survived by his daughter, Wanda Herrin of Fayetteville; son, (Wayne) Billy Herrin of Hope Mills; daughter, Annette Blackwell of Hope Mills; daughter, Jessica Miller of Fayetteville; sister, Brenda Sawyer of Hope Mills; ex-spouse but lifetime companion, Wilma "Peewee" Herrin; and six grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service Sunday, December 13, 2020 from 11a.m. - 2 p.m. at the VFW, 3928 Doc Bennett Road, Fayetteville.
Peter Tadafam Mangefel
Peter Tadafam Mangefel of Raeford died Monday, December 7, 2020 at the age of 38.
He was born in Yap Micronesia on February 22, 1982. He was preceded in death by his father, John Avila Mangefel, and a brother. He served in the U.S. Army as a missile technician for over 10 years.
He is survived by his wife, Jessica Mangefel of the home; two daughters, Arien Mangefel and Claire-Mae Mangefel, both of the home; his mother, Theresa Turgeg of Micronesia. He is also survived by two brothers and three sisters.
A funeral service will be held 3:00 pm Saturday, December 12, 2020 at Crumpler Funeral Home Chapel, 131 Harris Avenue, Raeford, N.C.
Margaret Ray Pannell
Margaret Ray Pannell of Raeford died Thursday, December 10, 2020 at the age of 93.
She was born in Hoke County on August 8, 1927 to the late Daniel Max Ray and Lessie Smith Ray. She was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence S. Pannell.
She was a lifelong and very active member of Parker United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years.
She is survived by a son, Daniel E. Pannell and his wife Vicki of Vass; three daughters, Laura P. Lane of Raeford, Linda C. Goepper and her husband Dant of Greenville, S.C., Eileen P. Walker and her husband Lloyd of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; two grandchildren, Patrick N. Walker and his wife Molly, and Stacy Walker; a brother, Gerald Ray of York, S.C.

Beverly Sue Johnson Lowery of Raeford died Sunday, December 6, 2020 at the age of 60.
She was born in Fayetteville on July 28, 1960, to the late Pete and Patsy Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband Clifton Lowery.
She is survived by a son Joseph Johnson of Raeford; two daughters Dana Johnson of Raeford, and Paula Winchester and her husband David of Raeford; four grandchildren, Justin Johnson, Jacob Johnson (Kaleen Quick) Cameron Johnson and Nevaeh Johnson all of Raeford; five sisters Janice Locklear of Raeford, Ester Poteat and her husband Willie of Fayetteville, Penny Porter and her husband Anthony of Hope Mills, Lora Locklear and her husband Melvin of Red Springs, and Judy Johnson of Asheville.
A private memorial service will be held later. Services have been entrusted to Crumpler Funeral Home of Raeford.
