Clemateen Harden Britt of 310 West Third Ave died Saturday, December 29, 2012 in her home at the age of 71.
She was born in Robeson County on April 17, 1941 to the late Dolan and Lula Edwards Harden. She was preceded in death by her son Wayne White; a brother, Talmadge Harden; and sisiters, Hazel Haire and Kathleen Hales. She attended the Church of God of Prophecy in Raeford. She retired from Cheseborough-Ponds in Raeford. She loved to cook and carry food to her neighbors and work in the garden. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and neighbor. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
Survivors are her husband, Robert Britt; daughters, Carolyn Deese (Dennis) of Englewood, Colorado, and Teresa Dean of Pinebluff; sons, Ronnie Haynes (Julie) of Troy, and George Haynes of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; a brother Delton Harden (Juanita) of Raeford; three sisters, Ernestine Hinson (Frank) of Raeford, Geraldine Garrett of Livingston, Tennessee, and Carrie Jacobs (Harold) of Lumberton.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at the Church of God of Prophecy, 913 West Prospect Ave, Raeford, with Pastor Randall Snead officiating.

David McFadyen
David Gratton McFadyen Sr. of Fayetteville died from complications of the flu Thursday, December 27, 2012 in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital at the age of 70.
He was born in Robeson County on November 25, 1942. He was preceded in death by his father James Gratton McFadyen and his stepfather, Gus Parker. He was a member of Arran Lake Baptist Church, and was a past member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Rockfish where he served as deacon. He retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation after 28 years of service and the Raeford Salvage Company after 10 years of service. He was also the owner and operator of McFadyen's Firewood Service for 28 years. He was a member of the Pee Dee Antique Power Club and a board member of the Sea Garden Home Owner's Association. He graduated from 71st High School in 1962.

Howard Craig formerly of Raeford died Thursday, December 27, 2012 in Lower Cape Fear Hospice Brunswick Center at the age of 76.
He was born in Caldwell County on March 22, 1936 to the late Douglas Hayward Craig Maggie Estelle Sullivan Craig. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Douglas Craig and Ray Craig. He was the owner and operator of the Raeford Body Shop in Raeford before he retired in 2010. He was a member of the Coastal Tarheels Chapter of the Family Motor Coach Association.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Glenda H. Craig of Supply; sons, Billy Craig of Supply, and Kenneth Craig of Raeford; daughter, Yvonne Whitmire (Bill) of Shallotte; sisters-in-law, Carol Craig of Hope Mills, and Jackie Craig of Converse, Texas; seven grandchildren, Beth Cook (Charlie), A.J. Combs, Brittany Combs, Christian Craig, Justin Craig, Kevin Craig, LeeAnna Craig; three great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Pearlie McDowell
Pearlie McDowell, 84, a long-time resident of Annapolis, Maryland, died December 1 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Known to his friends as "Jack", he was born on May 22, 1928 in Raeford where he attended school. He enlisted in the Army and served in Korea, and with peace keeping forces in Germany. He also served as a cook in the Army. After his military service, he began working at Bethlehem Steel in Sparrows Point, where he was employed as a steel worker for more than 35 years.
After retirement, he moved to Millsboro, Delaware, and enjoyed tending his flower garden, a hobby he continued until his death. He returned to the Annapolis area when he began having health problems, living at Gardens of Annapolis. There he met his wife, Barbara McDowell, whom he married on May 27, 2011.
He was a member of the United Steel Workers of America and attended Broadneck Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
He loved animals, had a lifelong passion for cooking, and was a country western movie aficionado, his favorites being John Wayne movies.
He is preceded in death by his brothers, Maxie, Curtis, Melvin and Walter McDowell.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and her son, Bill Tucker of Annapolis; two sons, Duane McDowell and Jack Albert McDowell, both of Salisbury; one daughter, Beverly Leigh Hartson of Virginia; two sisters, Earlie Mae Smith and Geneva Mckeithan; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
A Life Celebration was held on Friday, December 7 at 11 a.m. and a funeral at noon at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater.
Interment was at Faith Memorial Gardens, 5598 Trumps Mill Rd., Baltimore.

James "Robert" McNeill
James "Robert" McNeill, age 75, of Raeford, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2012. He was born on March 3, 1937 in Raeford to William John McNeill and Addie Baker McNeill. He grew up in Raeford and graduated from Raeford High School.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Alona Mussmann McNeill. He is also survived by his loving daughters, Susan McNeill Powell, husband Paul, and Nancy McNeill Peterson, husband Jeff, all of Wilmington. He is also survived by his grandson Chase McNeill Peterson, who he affectionately called "my little buddy." He is survived by brothers, Lewis McNeill and wife Sarah Louise McNeill, St. Pauls, and Floyd McNeill and wife Joye McNeill, Raeford; sisters Janie McNeill Barbour and husband Eugene Barbour, Fayetteville, and Lucille McNeill Burkhart and husband Richard Burkhart, Edith McNeill Newton and husband Edwin Newton, both of Raeford. He is also survived by Melva Mussmann Nielsen and Richard Nielsen of Weeping Water, Nebraska, and Carol Mussmann Jordan and Larry Jordan and Gordan Mussmann, all of Lincoln, Nebraska.
He was also blessed with an abundance of nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his brother William Edward McNeill and wife Hazel, and sister Margaret McNeill Willis and husband Clarence.
He served four years in the United States Air Force and then began a 16- year career with the US Postal Service. His interest in agriculture afforded him the opportunity for his career path to lead to farming, which he dearly loved.
His proudest accomplishments were his 52 years with Alona, his daughters, sons-in-law, and grandson. He was devoted to his family and friends and certainly never met a stranger.
He was a member of Galatia Presbyterian Church where he served on the board of deacons and was a dedicated fireman at Puppy Creek Volunteer Fire Department, and served as the chairman of the board of directors.
A service will be held to celebrate his life on December 22, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Galatia Presbyterian Church, Fayetteville. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. Born April 13, 1939 in Raeford to the late Mamie Currie and John Daniel Wilkes. He worked at Burlington Industries for 45 years as a foreman. He is also preceded in death by two brothers, James and Wilton Wilkes; and three sisters, Thelma Adcox, Ella May Cook, and Marie Hales.
Survivors are: wife, Shirley; sons, Robert and his wife Teresa of Rowland, Bryan and his wife Teresa of Raeford, and Donald and is wife Lisa of Aberdeen; brothers, J.D. of McColl, South Carolina, and Ervin of Clyde, North Carolina; sister, Peggy Inman of Raeford; brother-in-law , Roy Calhoun of Gibson, North Carolina; sister-in-law, Mae Anna Wilkes of Washington, North Carolina; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Dorchell Hurst Wilson, 42, of Raleigh, formerly of Raeford, died Dec. 7, 2012.

Carolyn Ann Baker of Raeford died Sunday, December 9, 2012 in her home at the age of 58.
She was born in Hoke County on September 6, 1954. She was preceded in death by her father, Elwood Baker, her brother, Douglas Baker, and her companion, Herb Hancock.
Survivors are her mother, Reeta M. Baker of Raeford; her brother, Neil E. Baker (Elisa) of Iowa; her sister, Faye Baker (Bruce Crawley) of Fayetteville; her niece, Christy Baker of Raleigh; and her nephews, Shawn Baker of Raeford and J.D. Baker of Iowa.

He is survived by wife, Lynne Bommele; a daughter, Lee Anne Bommele; a stepdaughter, Lindsey Justice; his father, Robert Bommele; sisters, Connie Campisi and Ethel McCormick; and a brother, Gary Lergner.

James Earl Jones
James Earl Jones passed away Thursday, December 6, 2012 at his home in Brentwood, Tennessee surrounded by his family. He was born September 19, 1944 to John Allen and Willa Conoly Jones in Lumber Bridge. He graduated from Hoke High School. He served in the Navy during Vietnam before attending East Carolina University. He was a longtime resident of Brentwood, where he was a successful businessman, avid volunteer and devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife of over 40 years, Carol; sons, Christopher Neal Jones of Nashville and Michael Reed (Kristine) Jones of Pasadena, California; daughters, Kelly Anne Jones of Chattanooga and Kimberly Lynn Jones of Brentwood; granddaughter, Elena Arevik Jones; brothers, Whiteford and William Jones; sister, Catherine McNiell; sister-in-law, Barbara Jones all of North Carolina; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. he was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Jesse and Robert Jones; and sisters, Anne Oliver and Mary Cobb. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, December 9 at Williamson Memorial, at 4 p.m., David Kidd officiating, with visitation two hours preceding the service (2-4 pm). Mary Oldham Teal of Raeford died Wednesday, December 5, 2012 in her home at the age of 88.
She was born in Tatum, South Carolina on October 11, 1924 to the late Fletcher and Martha Saunders Oldham. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond A. Teal; two sisters, Lillian Miller and Mae Butler; and three brothers, Eulus Oldham, Lewis Oldham, and James Oldham. She was a lifetime member of the Raeford Presbyterian Church.
Survivors are her sons, Dale Teal and Harold Teal both of Raeford; her daughters, Carole Crittenden, Martha Jo Davis and her husband, Charles, Ginger Matagi and her husband, Matt, all of Raeford; her brothers, Palmer Oldham and his wife Shirley of Red Springs, and Tommy Oldham of Red Springs; eight grandchildren, Al Crittenden, Harold Teal and his wife Tonya, Robert Thorne, Jr. and his wife Sarah, Michele D'Annunzio and her husband John, Travis Matagi, Todd Davis, Chris Davis, Ashley Davis; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Faye Best
Faye Eugenia Stroupe Best died Saturday, December 1, 2012 following a lengthy illness. She was born January 9, 1926 to the late Henry and Wilma Arthurs Stroupe in Dallas, North Carolina, and was a 1943 graduate of Dallas High School and a 1944 graduate of Evans College of Business in Gastonia. Following her graduation she was employed by Public Service Natural Gas in Gastonia for several years. She married James Frederick Best of Dallas on August 30, 1949 who survives.
After her children entered elementary school, she returned to school, earning her associate degree from Sandhills Community College, and bachelors and M.Ed. from Pembroke State University. Following her graduation from Pembroke she was employed for many years as a reading specialist by the Hoke County School system. After retiring she served as a volunteer with the Hoke Literacy Council. She spent most of her adult life in Raeford, where she was an active member of Raeford Presbyterian Church, the Raeford Woman's Club and Chaminade Music Club. As a member at Raeford Presbyterian Church she was a member of the John Calvin Sunday School class, the Handbell Choir, served as Bible study leader and as chair of her circle and as president of Women of the Church who later recognized her with a life membership. She also served as Enabler for the Women of the Church for the Coastal Carolina Presbytery. Following her move to Charlotte in 2007, she transferred her membership to Matthews Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Martin and Janie Best of Matthews; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joanna and Wesley Huggins of Yadkinville, and Janet and James Pyatt of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, Lamar and Jean Stroupe of Dallas; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 4 at Holy Communion Lutheran Church, Dallas (the church of her childhood) with the Rev. William Pederson and the Rev. Dave Drysdale officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Gardens in Mount Holly.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Matthews Presbyterian Church, Raeford Presbyterian Church or Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte.

She was a member of Antioch Presbyterian Church where she received the Presbyterian Women Honorary Life Membership in 2002. She enjoyed serving her family and community through baking desserts and sharing her gifts with others.
Survivors include two daughters, Carole Elkins (Cliff) of Lexington, South Carolina , Jane McGugan (Danny) of Shannon; two sons, Johnny Boyles of Fayetteville, and Michael Boyles (Joyce) of Apex; a sister, Verna Lea Allen of King; eight grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

She was a member of the Raeford First Baptist Church, and was very active in the W.M.U. and the church choir. She had a special place in her heart for children with special needs.

Mary D. Balch of Raeford has gone to be with her Lord on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 while at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center at the age of 70.
Mary Jo was born on January 1, 1942 in Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Grafton County, New Hampshire, the daughter of Orville and Barbara (Chase) DeCoff. She attended schools in Pomfret and Woodstock, Vermont before marrying at a very tender age. She accompanied her husband George Balch around the world as an Army wife. Stationed at Fort Bragg for the bulk of their military career, Mary and George settled down in Raeford upon retirement. She was a member of the Sandy Grove United Methodist Church, DAV Auxiliary, and the V.F.W. Post 10 Auxiliary. She and George were known for being very early risers and always having the coffee ready at the family reunions.
Survivors are her husband, George E. Balch of Raeford; four daughters, June E. Bolieu and her husband Don of Salina, Kansas, Jane C. Colbert and her husband James of Watson, Oklahoma, Jacquline M. Drinkwater of Albany, Georgia, and Jennifer L. Hammock and her husband Paul of Salem, Alabama; her mother, Barbara Gilbert and her husband Earl of Leesburg, Florida; two brothers, Andrew DeCoff and his wife, Marie of Bennington, Vermont, Peter DeCoff and Lee of North Pomfret, Vermont; two sisters, Norma Peoples and her husband, David of Broadway, Virginia, and Sally Weglarz and her husband, Ronald of North Pomfret, Vermont; 17 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 until 9 p.m. on Monday, November 5, 2012 at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Ave. Raeford, NC.

Duncan B McFadyen III
Duncan Brown McFadyen, III, 64, of Raeford, North Carolina died Friday, November 2, 2012 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. He was born April 20, 1948 in Lumberton, North Carolina to Duncan Brown McFadyen, Jr. and wife, Harriet Hodgin McFadyen of Hoke County, who predeceased him. He graduated from Hoke County High School, received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina in 1970, and a Juris Doctorate in Law from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1973.
He began his professional legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in Cumberland and Hoke County and served in that capacity from 1973 to 1976. He joined the law firm of the late R. Palmer Willcox in 1976 where he quickly made partner. He became the senior partner in 1998 and served in that capacity until 2012 in the law firm now known as Willcox, McFadyen, Fields and Sutherland. He served as Bar Councilor for Judicial District 16A from 2001 to 2007 and County Attorney for Hoke County from 1979 to 1993. He was held in the highest esteem by his partners, colleagues and members of the court system.
He was a lifelong member of the Raeford Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon and then elder.
He was an avid reader of history and great literature, an excellent storyteller, and loyal friend to many who will miss his boundless charm and good cheer. The local paper ran a story in 1976 describing him as Raeford's most eligible bachelor, and he remained so until his passing. He faced all of life's challenges, including the last, with his well-known gentlemanly poise and dignity.
He is survived by his brothers, George Hodgin McFadyen and his wife, Anne of Pinetops, North Carolina, and James Laurence McFadyen and his wife, Susan of Thomson, Georgia; four nieces and nephews, James Scott McFadyen and John Robert McFadyen and his wife, Claire of Tarboro, North Carolina, Martha McFadyen Scott and husband, Winfield of Louisville, Georgia, and Mary Kathryn McFadyen Land and husband, Jared of Thomson, Georgia; aunts Frances McFadyen McCreery and husband, Robert of Ponte Vedra, Florida, Louise B. McFadyen of Red Springs; a special aunt and a dear lifelong friend Willa McFadyen Lindsay of Southern Pines; and many cousins. He was a loving brother and uncle.
A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Raeford Cemetery on Monday, November 5th. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the Raeford Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Michael McGehee and the Rev. James Braden officiating. The family will be available for visitation following the memorial service Monday, November 5th at the Raeford Presbyterian Church-John Ropp Fellowship Hall.

Letrice Jackson Campbell of 207 E. Edinborough Ave died Monday, October 29, 2012 in FirstHealth Regional Medical Center at the age of 78.
She was born in Sampson County on January 16, 1934 to the late Minton Blackmon Jackson and Eula Bell Howard Jackson. She was an Honorary Life Member of the Raeford Presbyterian Church and a member of the Presbyterian Women. She was employed with Burlington Industries in the early 1960's.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Jack E. Campbell of Raeford; two daughters, Rhonda C. Ritter and her husband Blaine of Whispering Pines, and Karen S. Campbell of Raeford; two brothers, Roy Jackson and his wife, Becky of Angier, and Clebert Jackson and his wife Judy of Rock Hill, South Carolina; a sister Irese Dees of Rockfish; and two grandchildren, Daniel Ritter and Justin Ritter, both of Whispering Pines.

She was born in Dallas, Texas on October 8, 1942 to the late Waymon William Rowe and Lucille Fisher Rowe. She was a Native American Cherokee of the Wolf Clan.
Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Faye Chancellor of Raeford and Ruby Laverne DeLaughter of Westfield, Massachusetts; one nephew, Christopher Clinton Toland of DeSoto, Texas; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in the Hillside Cemetery in Roslyn, Pennsylvania.

He was born in Scotland County on February 18, 1948 to the late Clarence David Smith, Jr. and Connie Edith Ayers Smith. He served in the U.S. Army and fought in the Vietnam War. He is preceded in death by his step-mother, Hattie Pearl Patterson Smith, brother, Donald Eugene Williams, and sister, Linda Yvonne Smith.

Amber Bolton
Amber Bolton of Raeford died Sunday, October 21, 2012 in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center at the age of 22.
She was born in Cumberland County on June 28, 1990 to Dana Mitchell Bolton and Debra Ann Quick Bolton. She attended Hoke High School and was a member of the North Carolina National Guard. She served a tour in Afghanistan and was promoted to Specialist E-4.
Survivors include her parents, Dana and Debra Quick Bolton of Raeford; a brother, Chase M. Bolton of Raeford; two sisters, Ember L. Bolton and Danielle L. Fannie Mae Pennell, age 88, of Holden Beach died Monday October 8, 2012 at her residence.
She was born in Mecklenburg County on December 16, 1923 and was the daughter of the late Joseph Robert Armstrong and Fannie White Armstrong. She was a devoted member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church where served on the kitchen committee for many years. She was a member of the Holden Beach Beautification Club since 1990.
She is survived by her husband, Shuford Pennell of the home; two sons, Vann Pennell and wife Cathy of Southport, and Eddie Pennell and wife Cassie of Clinton; two grandsons, Chad Pennell and Brett Pennell; and granddaughter Sydney Pennell.

Survivors include his wife, Gennie (Locklear) Britt of 53 years; his son, Bruce Britt (Margo) of Sacramento, California; daughters, Carol Gray of the home, Karen Martin (Larry) of Camino, California; his mother, Helen O'Dette of Orangevale, California; two brothers, Allen O'Dette (Cheryl) of Gurnee, Illinois, Dennis O'Dette (Meg) of Orangevale, California, a sister, Donna Krempley (Mike) of Lincoln, California; grandchildren, Sophie Trotter, Christopher Gray, Nicole Martin, Benjamin Martin, Brittney Martin, Robert Austin Britt; numerous nieces and nephews from North Carolina and Illinois; and his travel companions, Larry Goins, Glen White and Bruce Locklear.
He was retired from the Army National Guard and the Operating Engineer, Local # 3. He was constantly busy working.

Shirley Ann McNeill of Smithfield died, September 20, 2012 in Johnston Medical Center at the age of 73.
She was born in the Blue Springs Community of Hoke County to Clifford McNeill, Sr., and Annie Parks McNeill. She was the youngest of three children. Her parents and her siblings, C.J. McNeill, Jr., and Jean Harris, preceded her in death. She is survived by her cousins, niece and nephews, as well as her neighbors and church friends.
She was a graduate of Flora MacDonald College. She served as the Certified Director of Christian Education at First Presbyterian Church, Hamlet and Westminster Presbyterian Church, Raleigh. She was the first DCE at First Presbyterian Church, Smithfield, serving from December 18, 1989, through her retirement on February 28, 2003. She also served there as an elder. She continued to live in Smithfield after her retirement.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 215 South 3rd Street, Smithfield, at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 23.
A graveside service will be held Monday, September 24, at Bethel Presbyterian Church, John Russell Road in Raeford at 11 a.m.

Herman L. Patterson
Herman L. Patterson, 96, of Raeford, formerly of Eden, peacefully passed away at his home on Saturday, August 25, 2012.
He was born July 28, 1916 in Leaksville, son of the late Baylor Cephus and Bertha Lee Patterson. He resided in Leaksville prior to joining the Stuckey's Company and moving to Clovis, New Mexico in 1962. Following retirement in 1982, he moved to Raeford. He later became pastor of the Spray Primitive Baptist Church in Eden and remained in that positoin until 2003.
He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Bessie Joyce Patterson; a son, Lindsay Patterson and wife, Judy of Borger, Texas; a daughter, Linda McLeod and husband, Benny of Raeford; a son, Joseph Patterson and wife, Gwynn of Sierra Vista, Arizona; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bobby, Russell and Nelson; and two sisters, Daisy Bousman and Pauline Price.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 1, at Spray Primitive Baptist Church, 207 Dameron Street in Eden. Burial will follow in Overlook Cemetery.

Gene Paul Thacker
Gene Paul Thacker of 1701 Doc Brown Road died Monday, August 20, 2012 in First Health Moore Regional at the age of 81.
He was born in Pike County, Kentucky on June 21, 1931 to the late Appy Thacker and Octavia Smith Thacker. He was preceded in death by his son Paul Keith Thacker, his brother, Chester Thacker, and two sisters, Clara Thacker and Opal Thacker Bishop.
After marrying his high school sweetheart Billie Jean Chapman in 1953, he joined the U.S. Army and earned his jump wings with the 101st Airborne Division, the Screaming Eagles. In 1963 he joined the U.S. Army's elite parachute team, the Golden Knights. In 1967, he received the Golden Knight of the Year award, the first time the award was ever given. In 1968 he left the team to serve a tour in Vietnam. While in Vietnam serving as an advisor he was engaged in a firefight and wounded. He returned to the United States and became the full-time manager of the Green Beret Sport Parachute Club. With his deep passion for the sport of skydiving, in 1970 he began building what is today P.K. Airpark. He is probably most noted for coaching and training more world champion skydivers than any other professional in the sport. He was a veteran in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was awarded many commendations over his 22 year career in the U.S. Army. Some of these include the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Master Parachute Badge and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He retired from the U.S. Army as a Master Sergeant in 1971.

In 1968 he left the team to serve a tour in Vietnam. While in Vietnam serving as an advisor he was engaged in a firefight and wounded. He returned to the United States and became the full-time manager of the Green Beret Sport Parachute Club. With his deep passion for the sport of skydiving, in 1970 he began building what is today P.K. Airpark. He is probably most noted for coaching and training more world champion skydivers than any other professional in the sport. He was a veteran in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was awarded many commendations over his 22 year career in the U.S. Army. Some of these include the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Master Parachute Badge and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He retired from the U.S. Army as a Master Sergeant in 1971.
Survivors include his wife, Billie Jean Thacker of Raeford; a daughter, Kimberly Sue Moore and her husband Mike of Pinebluff; two sons, Tony Thacker and his wife Kate of Raeford, and Tim Thacker of Raeford; a brother, Greg Thacker and his wife Brenda of Muscleshoals, Alabama; three half-brothers, Mike Thacker, Ronnie Thacker, and Gary Thacker all of Canada, Kentucky; three sisters, Mary Jane Deiranieh and her husband Akram of San Jose, California, Lois Reed of Belfry, Kentucky, and Gail Thacker of Belfry, Kentucky; six grandchildren, Deny Jo Nagule, Lindsay Rae Moore, Lauren Ansley Thacker, Taylor Nicole Moore, Morgan Leigh Thacker, and Allie Victoria Thacker; three great-grandchildren, Darren Nagule, Charlie McClendon, and Madison McClendon; one great-great-grandchild, Royce Michael Nagule; a special nephew, Steve Bishop of South Carolina; and his companion of 13 years, his Jack Russell, Otis.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, August 24, 2012 at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Ave, Raeford, NC 28376.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 25, 2012 in the Raeford Cemetery with full military honors.

Newberry Locklear
Newberry Locklear of Raeford died Wednesday, August 15, 2012 in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital at the age of 89.
He was born in Robeson County on April 4, 1923 to the late Colon Locklear and Viola Locklear.He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean War. He is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara A. Locklear; two sons, Colin Locklear and Michael Locklear; a brother, Myrle Locklear; two sisters, Retha Henderson and Pearline Henderson; and a granddaughter, Angela K. Jacobs. He was a member of Mt. Elim Baptist Church.
Survivors are two sons, Patrick A. Locklear and Christopher Locklear both of Massachusetts; two daughters, Linda Panoski of Connecticut, and Elsie Jacobs of Red Springs; 19 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
The funeral was Saturday, August 18, 2012 at Mt. Elim Baptist Church with the Rev. Chris Webb, the Rev. Sam Henderson, and the Rev. David Hunt officiating. Burial will be in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Mildred Mae Brown of 258 Hickory Drive died Wednesday August 15, 2012 in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville at the age of 62.
She was born on March 7, 1950 in California to the Franklin Pettet and Hazel Minor.
She was preceded in death by her father, Franklin S. Pettet, her sister Betty Stankewitz and her step-father Dick Walsh.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry F. Brown of Raeford; son, Jerry Dwayne Brown and his wife, Deana of Maxton; a daughter, Shannon Mae Honaker and her companion, Sue of Raeford; her mother, Hazel M. Mary L. Lawhon
Mary Lewis Lawhon of 25 Jefferson Davis Court, Martinsville, Virginia, died Friday, August 10 at her home. She was born on September 19, 1923 to the late Robert Banks Lewis and the late Maude Upchurch Lewis in Raeford.
She graduated from Salem College in Winston-Salem and performed graduate work at NC State University. She taught elementary and high school in Cumberland County, and during World War II taught elementary school on the island of Trinidad, where her father was commander of troops in training for future deployment.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served in many capacities, including deacon and elder. She served her community on the board of trustees of the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County, and the board of governors of Chatmoss Country Club. She volunteered at Memorial Hospital, and enjoyed her associations with the Garden Study Club and Book Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Watson Lawhon. She is survived by son Richard Upchurch Lawhon and wife Donna; granddaughters Andrea Lewis Lawhon Murray and husband Dan Murray, Tracey Marie Lawhon, and Mary Catherine Lawhon; son Robert Stirling Lawhon; and granddaughter Juliana Louise Lawhon.
A graveside service was held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, August 12 at Raeford Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Braden officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church in Martinsville, Virginia or to the charity of one's choice.
